So can someone tell the residents of Ferryhill why we have one of the highest council taxes in the country, and why the council are so hell bent on building more houses in Ferryhill? What is going to attract people to move here? Takeaway food?

Family Tree HelpI am researching my family tree and hope someone may be willing to help me regarding the following gentleman. William Teasdale Joice (known as Bill and nicknamed “chinner”) married a lady called Sarah E Stephenson (nee Chaytor) in 1971. Sadly he was just 61 years old when he died at 145 Raby Road, Ferryhill in October 1984. The obituary notice has further detailed information of his family.I would be truly grateful if anyone may have a photograph of this gentleman that they would be willing to share, as it would mean a great deal.I can be contacted at the email address and phone number, below.

the £2,300 needed to install a new sound sys-tem and Cllr Makepeace provided £3,875 to pur-chase the new lighting system which features LED lighting allowing the centre to improve energy efficiency as well as improving the aesthetics of shows and performances.

Cllr Makepeace said: “I was delighted to support the Village Hall. “It’s great to see a vibrant and well sup-ported community facil-ity in the village, and seeing the hard work

the committee put in to raise the money for the sound system meant I was happy to support the Village Hall for the lighting system.”

Stella Birchall, Chair of Kirk Merrington Village Halls committee added: “We are very happy with the new lighting system which has been installed thanks to Cllr Make-peace’s Neighbourhood Budget Grant.

“This new lighting sys-tem will benefit all users of the community centre offering a very profes-sional lighting set-up. “

Michael Wilkes Spen-nymoor Area Action Partnership Co-ordina-tor said: “It is always great to see community groups helping to sup-port projects that not only improve the facil-ities for the local com-munity buildings, but also allow customers a greater experience, ena-bling the venues to be more attractive and sus-tainable.”

USERS OF Kirk Merring-ton Community Centre are seeing their village hall in a whole new light thanks to support from their local County Coun-cillor and Spennymoor Area Action Partnership.

After hearing from the committee of Kirk Merrington Village Hall that the standard of the audio visual equipment was impinging on the performances of some of the entertainment shows and the annual pantomime, Cllr Joe Makepeace was happy to offer his support to help the Village Hall purchase a new lighting

No job too small

ALL TWELVE North East councils have this week called on the government to ensure funding is dis-tributed fairly in the forth-coming spending review.

The Ministry of Hous-ing, Communities and Local Government has been consulting on options for distributing elements of revenue sup-port grant in 2019/20 and asking local authorities for their feedback.

Cllr Simon Henig, Chair of the Association of North East Councils (ANEC) and Leader of Durham County Council, said: “We have responded to the consultation with a unified voice across the north east and a clear

message: any funding that Government iden-tifies for 2019/20 must be distributed fairly, and not simply handed to the most prosperous areas of the country.

“Local authorities across the north east are struggling with huge pressures in our chil-dren’s services and we urgently need govern-ment to address the issues we are facing with a fair distribution of fund-ing.

“We have faced the steepest reductions in funding and are seeing the greatest increases in demand for our statutory social services and this has to be recognised.”

“We accepted the offer from the police to deliver the assemblies as we believe it is important to equip our students with the information and life skills they will need, not just when they are here as students, but through-out their lives.

“To highlight the impor-tance of these assem-blies, Tyne Tees news reported on it during the

6.30pm evening news programme on Thursday 20th September.

“The camera crew came into school to film the assembly and interviewed four of our students about their thoughts and opinions on what they had seen and heard.

“We are extremely proud of our students and the way they explained their views on TV.

“Thank you to Miss Gourlay for organising the informative assem-bly during Knife Crime Awareness Week.”

LAST WEEK Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College welcomed the Durham Police Commu-nity Cohesion section into the school to deliver assemblies to Year 10 and 11 students on knife crime.

The presentation went through statistics regard-ing knife crime nationally as well as explaining the current laws for pos-session of an offensive weapon.

A spokesperson for the school said: “It was a chance for our students to see what can happen if someone carries a knife and reflect on all the lives that are affected when it
