Create/maintain a directorate Facebook page

• Each Directorate should have one (1) Facebook page.

• If your Directorate has many components, designate an admin from each component to have access to the Directorate’s Facebook page.

• PAO recommends you have at least one admin and one alternate admin.

– Who is comfortable with this?

– Who is capable of doing this from the office, and possibly during inclement weather, at home?

Admins must complete the OPSEC, and OPSEC and Social Networking training outlined in ALARACT 421/2011, forward certificates to Public Affairs (PAO).

Create a clear title for your page: “Fort Campbell Directorate of…”

Info Tab: “Official” verbiage is required. Please see the Fort Campbell Facebook page for this. Copy the verbiage and paste to your Info tab.

Depending on your organization’s mission, adjust your page settings to limit comments or photos on your wall.

Register with FTCKY PAO: Send the link and the admin POC’s to PAO (270) 798-3025.

Once your registration is confirmed with FTCKY PAO, register with the U.S. Army’s Office of the Chief of Public Affairs (OCPA) at: www.army.mil/media/socialmedia

Maintain the page regularly:

Monitor the wall for inappropriate posts or questions from users. (OPSEC violations, PII, Spam, foul language)

Share relevant content on the Fort Campbell, Kentucky page.

Once your page has hit 200 followers, you will be able to create a unique URL for the page: “www.facebook.com/FortCampbellMWR” (If you need help with this, please contact the Fort Campbell

Public Affairs Social Media Team.)

Create/maintain a directorate Facebook page Ensure your organization’s page is up to U.S. Army Social Media standards.

• Try labeling your information.

• You can “sign” your posts with your section’s name: “(Message from Kinnard) or (Message from Fire Prevention).”

Deciding what to ‘post’ or ‘share’ on Facebook

• On the Fort Campbell Facebook page you should be sharing information about what your Directorate does or offers.

• Information for customers should be clear and easy to understand.

• Admins should have a strong grasp on the English language and all of its proper grammar and punctuation.

• If you are sharing information about an event, leave a main office number as the POC: See the ACS Post to the right.

• When sharing links, explain why you are sharing it: See ASAP and MWR post to the right.

• Not everyone is going to have exciting content to share on a regular basis. That’s OK because you will still have important info to share at some point!

• When you have office hours

changes or perhaps a new service or a new location, that is what you should share on the Fort Campbell wall.

• If you have photos of promotions or check presentations or internal Directorate events, those should be shared on YOUR DIRECTORATE’S wall. Try to keep internal events on your own page. There are exceptions, let’s discuss.

• Please keep in mind this effort

is to inform people and showcase the great work Fort Campbell Garrison Directorates are doing every day. Keep it professional.

Sharing stories about personnel

• Generally, in the name of privacy, I do not recommend sharing personal news about employees. PII is prohibited.

• However, when we have an employee who has earned an honor or has a special event, then let’s share it.

Page 18: Garrison Social Media Training-Facebook

facebook.com/FortCampbell @FortCampbell Flickr.com/FortCampbell Youtube.com/FortCampbell101

What’s appropriate? Why is it so important that we ‘stay in our lane?’

• Remember, this page is accessible to the public.

• What kind of impression do you want people to have of your Directorate?

• If you wouldn’t tell your own mother or post it on a sign in your front yard, you have no business putting it on Facebook.

Page 19: Garrison Social Media Training-Facebook

• Customers, Soldiers, and community members won’t be the only ones looking at your page. – Superiors

– Enemies/Adversaries

– Media

– Non-local Family members

– Other Garrisons/International communities

– Other DoD Services

– Average Americans

• Crisis Comms/Force Protection Events – Why add confusion to an already confusing

event?

– Directorate pages are to stand down and not spread information which is not cleared for release. Refer audiences to the Fort Campbell, Kentucky Facebook page if necessary. Best COA: Unpublish page or disable wall. Speaking with one voice is paramount.

What’s appropriate? Why is it so important that we ‘stay in our lane?’

What have we learned about crisis communications from past events?

Page 20: Garrison Social Media Training-Facebook

• Speak to what you know.

• DO NOT RELEASE INFORMATION NOT CLEARED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE.

• Coordinate with PAO before posting something you think is questionable.

• Am I giving anything sensitive or advantageous away?

• What messages are we sending?

• Is it my place to comment on this or talk about this?

• Who is the OFFICIAL RELEASE AUTHORITY?

Why is it so important that we ‘stay in our lane?’

You are a storyteller. You are an asset.

• This is not always easy work. – But if we can do this correctly, it will be a great

benefit to our community.

• You are not alone. – Call PAO if you need help or if you have questions. You

must remain in contact with PAO in order for clearance on your social media pages. Do not create social media accounts for Fort Campbell organizational purposes without speaking with PAO first.

• Your questions?
