There is no denying the reason that millions of visitors come to this treasured setting each year is to witness and experience the splendor of the 800 square-mileGreat Smoky Mountains National Park — the most visited park in the nation. Its beauty surrounds Gatlinburg on three sides!

Lush green forest lines the miles of trails, streams and roadways in the spring and summer, turning to rich reds, yellows and oranges in the fall. Even in the cold of winter, the mountain snow makes the surrounding vistas appealing to the eye. The national park encompasses a full range of elevation changes accessible by more than 800 miles of trails appealing to every outdoor enthusiast.

Tackle a long hike or take a short walk while enjoying picnic grounds, visitor centers and scenic overlooks.

While visiting the Smokies you may encounter many of the species that call it home, including the iconic American Black Bear, wild turkey and deer, as well as some reptile and fish species that are found nowhere else in the world.

Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll on a quiet walkway, hiking to Mount LeConte, trout fishing or driving along the scenic roadways, you don’t have to look hard to find what it is that makes families, couples and adventurists come from miles around to see Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Preserving Gatlinburg for Future Generations

As the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg has a responsibility to preserve the natural beauty of the national park. The City and business community have embraced initiatives to preserve the Great Smoky Mountains for generations to come.

Visitors are pleased to learn that up to 70 percent of municipal waste collected in the area is diverted from the landfill via recycling initiatives and a state-of-the-art composting plant. Currently, Gatlinburg offers two recycling centers. Any waste that is not recycled is sent to Sevier Solid Waste, where all cardboard, paper, food waste and other bio-solids are composted through a balance of heat, moisture and oxygen combined with natural microorganisms to break down the organic material to create a rich compost that is free for the community to use.

Gatlinburg is striving for the next level of recycling through a local cooperative. Located at the east end of town, a collection center accepting aluminum and steel cans, most plastic containers, cardboard, newsprint, mixed paper, used oil, electronic waste and household batteries will likely open in 2012. This site will also serve as a collection point for donations to Goodwill, and all proceeds benefit Goodwill Industries.

Gatlinburg also has one of the state’s largest public transportation systems. The trolley system serves about 800,000 riders per year, cutting down on fuel emissions and traffic. It is also a cost effective means of transportation with the All Day Trolley Pass Program. Not only is the City of Gatlinburg preserving the area, but local

businesses recognize their responsibility as well. The Chamber of Commerce’s Gatlinburg Goes Green program has more than 100 local chamber businesses participating, all working together to conserve the environment. The Hilton Garden Inn has blazed a new trail as Tennessee’s first newly constructed LEED- certified hotel while other businesses have enlisted in green building projects and LEED-certification design.

Even the City’s holiday lights celebration, Gatlinburg Winter Magic, is green. Boasting more than three million lights, every City display has been converted from incandescent bulbs to Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. They use 80 percent less electricity than normal lights and illuminate the Smoky Mountains just as beautifully. In addition to greening our Christmas lights and traffic signals, visitors might notice other green technology. Riding the new wave of travel innovation, Gatlinburg is proud to offer electric car charging stations at its two municipal parking garages, with additional DC Fast Chargers located at private businesses throughout town.

As stewards of the Smokies, Gatlinburg officials have been working to preserve the natural beauty of the Smoky Mountains for more than 40 years. In our town, we see sustainability as a must to keep the area as beautiful as it is now for generations to come.

Visitors can enjoy all the National Park has to offer while respecting the environment. Whether gazing from a scenic overlook, hiking the trails or enjoying a picnic, you can rest assured that Gatlinburg will be preserved for your next visit.

Centuries before the first European hunters and settlers arrived, the Cherokee Indians called this land home and gave it the name Shaconage, which means “land of blue smoke.” The rugged terrain of this mountain landscape dictated that Indians and immigrants alike settled in coves and flat areas along waterways. The first European settlers arrived in the area now known as Gatlinburg at the turn of the 19th century.

For decades, this community was actually known as White Oak Flats. William Ogle first came to the area in 1802 and described Tennessee as “The Land of Paradise” to his family east of the Smoky Mountains. Before he returned home to collect his family, he cut logs for a cabin that would be the first in Gatlinburg.

It’s clear to any visitor that this quaint mountain village has been established as a destination for years and the community of Gatlinburg has worked hard to preserve the old mountain town feel and Southern Appalachian charm.

However, upon his return to South Carolina he fell ill and died in 1803. It was his widow, Martha Jane Huskey Ogle, who first settled in this valley with her five sons, two daughters, her brother and his family in 1807.

The area was not officially named Gatlinburg until 1854 when a controversial figure, Radford C. Gatlin, arrived in White Oak Flats. He opened the area’s second general store and a post office. Over time the name of the post office was applied to the whole settlement and so White Oak Flats became known as Gatlinburg. At the time of the Civil War, Radford C. Gatlin was eventually banished from the community for his different political views, but his legend lives on as the city still bears his name.

Gatlinburg remained an agricultural-based society for many years, with logging playing a prominent role in the early 20th century. But with the purchase of thousands of acres of once-forested land, Great Smoky Mountains National Park was born in the 1930s, with tourism boosting the area’s economy. Many of the displaced mountain families moved into town, either developing new enterprises or taking jobs in new hotels, restaurants and service facilities to meet the needs of the burgeoning tourist industry. Incorporated in 1945, Gatlinburg has since developed into a four-season resort, family destination and convention mecca.

Historic Sites

Appalachian culture is thriving in Gatlinburg. Nestled along an eight-mile motor loop resplendent with Smoky Mountain beauty and nostalgia are more than 100 quaint shops and restaurants proudly known as Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community.

Situated on the northeast edge of Gatlinburg, this area is the only zoned crafts community in the United States. Visitors to this artists’ haven will experience “another time and place” as they enjoy the heritage of Gatlinburg’s arts and crafts community and a celebration of Smoky Mountain history and culture.

The largest group of independent artisans in North America is found along this trail. Established in 1937, these artisans whittle, paint, sew, cast, weave and carve to create original collectables and works such as candles, baskets, quilts, brooms, chairs, pottery, jewelry, dolls, ceramics, scrimshaw, silversmithing and leather products, stained glass, wearable fashions, fine photography, frameable art, oils and watercolors.

There were several historic sites established in Gatlinburg that are still standing today. Martha Jane Huskey Ogle’s cabin – the first home in Gatlinburg – still stands in the middle of the bustling town. The cabin was first used as the Ogles’ residence then later repurposed as a hospital and a museum of mountain artifacts. It now is home to a seasonal City welcome center.

E.L. Reagan’s Custom Furniture, first established in 1910, is the oldest, continually operated business of its kind in Gatlinburg. It is actually still operated by one of his grandsons-in-law.

Other sites like Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, which was established in 1945, and the Pi Beta Phi settlement school, established in 1912, have grown into local educational institutions. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts offers year-round activities, including classes and workshops for college credit, while the Pi Beta Phi settlement school is Gatlinburg’s local elementary school.

Whether you’re visiting the Ogle cabin, Reagan’s Custom Furniture or Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, it is clear to see that Gatlinburg has a deep history in the Great Smoky Mountains. Early settlers, although at first self-sustaining, transformed this mountain town into a vacation destination to be shared with visitors from around the world for generations to come.

our Member Businesses to distribute a “Thank you, I’ve already been asked” Sticker. This sticker can be worn by our visitors during their stay to alert these acquisition agents of their lack of interest in the offer which they are making. Stickers may be obtained from participating members. If you are unable to obtain one through a member business you may stop by the offices of the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce at 811 East Parkway between the hours of 8am - 5pm Monday - Friday. Any rude behavior, physical touching, or making false statements by an acquisition agent should be reported in writing (including the name and identification number if possible) to the City of Gatlinburg, P.O. Box 5, Gatlinburg, TN 37738 and/or the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 527, Gatlinburg TN 37738. While the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce realizes that Time-Share has the potential to be an affordable vacation alternative for many, Time-Share presentations vary greatly in the length of time needed to complete the requirements for acquiring promised promo-tions. Should you elect to attend a Time-Share presentation, we encourage you to inquire at the appropriate company as to the specific time commitment involved.
