CAR SHOW John Tully

This month we had a fun meeting at Win Chevrolet followed by pizza, beer and one salad (Jennifer’s) at Shakey’s Pizza.

On January 8, Jack Walter will lead the Monday Morning Drivers Club to the RubelCastel in Glendora. Twisties will follow, weather permitting. On February 3, we will have the annual Awards Luncheon at the Admiral Risty Restaurant in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Pat for

David Tavares

Our “All GM Beach Classic” is April 28, 2018 at Ruby’s Dinner in Redondo Beach.

The Car Show planning committee will meet this month Jan. 10, 7 PM at the Tully’s, 21 Roanwood Dr. Rolling Hills Estates. All Vette Set members who wish to contribute to the planning are welcome.

Car Show sponsors and donations are beginning to arrive. We have a major tire sponsor and 2 tee shirt sponsors so far. A major sponsor contributes $500 or equivalent product and a tee shirt sponsor contributes $250 or equivalent product. We also have about 12 Sponsors/contributors, so far.

Our committee has been calling many of the probable/potential sponsors (the potential sponsor list is over 400). And we are seeing a lot of support with this personal contact. If any TVS members would like to help with this please give me a call. It’s really easy and can be quite rewarding as most companies like to support charity events and all are most cordial to requesters.

We would like to encourage all Vette Set members to donate a raffle prize to the Car Show. The easiest way to do this is to contact an owner/manager of a business you frequent and ask if they would donate a gift card, dinner coupon, item from their store, etc. Most businesses appreciate the advertisement, good will, and positive endorsement of a customer.

We also have trophy sponsorships available. They are $25 each and will have the sponsor’s name on the trophy. Please let me know if you, your business, or a business you frequent would like to sponsor.

If you would like our Sponsor Solicitation Letter to help you approach anyone just let me know and I will forward it to you. All the Sponsor levels and Car Show details are in the letter.

Fun News – John Kern has asked Malcolm, who brought the classic motorcycles to our show last year, if he would bring some for this year’s Show. He said he would if someone could loan him a transport trailer for the day. Please let John Kern know if you have anything that might work.

HISTORICAL REPORTOn Wednesday December 20, Dixie and Kim hosted a Christmas Dessert Party at their home in Manhattan Beach which featured the best of the holidays, namely cookies, cocktails, champagne, and coffee.

Their house was beautiful and decorated with what seemed to be millions of lights. Kim said he started installing lights before Halloween, which is about the time that Costco puts out their Christmas merchandise. Everyone in attendance enjoyed being in Kim and Dixie’s house, admiring Kim’s Corvette garage and enjoying holiday treats.

Except for Nico, no one in our club has enough remaining years to assemble garage memorabilia comparable to Kim’s. Fantastic!

Thank you Kim and Dixie!

We had“C

On January 8, Jack Walter’s Monday driver’s club drove to Rubel’s Castle in Glendora, CA.

As a child, Michael Clarke Rubel, the 3rd child of an Episcopal minister, loved to build structures from materials he found in a

nearby dump. After building a 3 story fort when he was 9, he dreamed of building a castle. With the help of many friends and volunteers he built a castle out of river rocks, abandoned cable, railroad tracks and other free and donated materials in an old stone reservoir.

Completed in 1986, after 25 years, Rubelia Castle includes a bottle house, a barn, a portcullis, a bee tower, a windmill, a machine shop, a tractor barn, a box factory, a tree house, a caboose used as a guest house, a tin palace, a kitchen and a clock tower containing a Seth Thomas clock, one of only 6 in the world.

In 2005 Michael presented the Pharm and Rubelia Castle to the Glendora Historical Society. He passed away in 2007.

Our usual twistys were not on the menu due to rain so Legends Cafe on Route 66 was our last destination before driving home.

Thanks Jack for another great trip!
