Another great month of activities for The Vette Set Corvette club. Activities Dinner at Island’s was delicious and as usual everyone enjoyed our fellow members company.

We were lucky to be invited to Southwest Corvettes Summer Potluck Picnic which was a lot of fun and gave us the opportunity to meet both Southwest Corvette Club members and members of Corvette Super Sports. As I understand it, this may become an annual event which would be terrific.

I’m looking forward to Nico and Gary’s Monday’s drivers run on 9/9. We are expecting 10+ cars and thanks for your support as these guys have expended a lot of effort into putting on this run for their first time. We have a new member added this month, welcome to Mike Merrill! We also had 6 guests at the meeting, another great turnout.

We had many members show up at Shakey’spizza after the meeting, all are invited, so please join us if you can.

Also, I am still asking for website pictures from several members. Please send them to me as soon as you can..

NCM NEWSMuseum Executive Director Wendell Strode Named to 2020 Corvette Hall of FameDuring the Corvette Hall of Fame banquet held on August 30, 2019, as part of the National Corvette Museum's 25th Anniversary celebration, NCM Board Chairman, Lon Helton, spoke to the 1,050 guests in attendance about reaching this milestone year. He shared his optimism for the future and expressed his gratitude for retiring Executive Director Wendell Strode.

"Wendell, your 23 years of service to the NCM could never be understated. A few years after it opened, the NCM fell on some pretty tough times, to the point where I think that its very existence was threatened. Not only did you rescue the NCM - you led it to the prosperity that we enjoy today."

He then went on to make a surprise announcement. "As we prepare to meet the 2019 inductees to the Hall of Fame... it is my pleasure to announce to you that the 2020 class of the Corvette Hall of Fame will include Wendell Strode."

Museum Displays Next Generation Powertrain Development Corvette & Clay ModelThanks to General Motors, the National Corvette Museum is now the first location outside of the GM traveling 2020 Corvette displays to have a next generation Corvette on exhibit.

Built in 2018, the Corvette powertrain development vehicle is a mid-engine Corvette used to test the new powertrain, primarily at Milford Proving Ground in Milford, MI.

The 6.2-liter LT2 engine vehicle is outfitted with test equipment to record data during testing on the track at the proving grounds, with a unique exhaust system that allowed Corvette engineers to run various tests on the engine. During its test runs at the proving grounds the car was vinyl wrapped with the now famous 8th Generation camouflage. After the reveal of the new mid-engine Corvette in California, the camouflage was stripped from the development vehicles, revealing this multi-colored, Next Generation Corvette.

25th Anniversary Celebration: Thanks for the MemoriesThey celebrated their 25th Anniversary with 12,000 visitors leading into Labor Day weekend. If you were there, you'll love how their video brings back fond memories, and if you weren't there, you'll wish you were!

Due to the popular demand for the NCM 25th Anniversary 2019 event t-shirts they will be placing another order on Friday, September 6th. They would like to let everyone know if they would like to place an order to please give them (Corvette Store) a call (270) 777-4555 to place their order. They will provide free shipping within the Contiguous U. S. for the event t-shirt order.

NCRS Sponsors Higher Education Scholarship Through MuseumWithout NCRS, there would not be a National Corvette Museum. It was their idea to build a facility to house the history of Corvette, and now, they are once again offering an educational opportunity through the Museum. This time that opportunity is to benefit the future of the automotive hobby.

"The NCRS Board wanted to give back to the NCM. The Museum's membership base is approximately 35,000 strong, while NCRS has about 15,000 members - so that's 20,000 enthusiasts that are not touched by NCRS," said Carlton Colclough, NCRS Representative on the National Corvette Museum Board of Directors. "We wanted to generate interest in the younger generation and get them interested. The students don't have to be attending college, it can be a tech school, or anything post high school education."

C8 REVEAL CAMINO REAL CHEVROLET

HISTORICAL REPORTClub members went to Camino Real Chevrolet in Monterey Park to see the new C8 Corvette. The dealer had displays showing the car colors, wheels, calipers and seats. After the reveal,

the dealer also provided tasty edibles on the spot. We noted that Ken fit into the passenger seat which could give hope to Debbie. We examined the forward and aft luggage compartments to determine space for extended trips.

IDAHO CORVETTE TOUR

Typical scenery for the first two days

Dinner at the Office Bar with Jack, the dollar grabbing dog

billed as the “Eastern Gateway to Hell’s Canyon National Recreation Area.”

When we went to dinner, the only place open was the Office Bar. Their specialty that night was chili with diced onions and a cornbread muffin. Their dog, Jack, is an Australian Sheep dog with the ability to con customers out of dollar bills. He gives the bills to the bartender, who rewards him with a treat. That night our bartender was Lindsey Henderson, who came from Santa Paula, CA (a farming community in Ventura County).

8/20, Night at Riggins, ID.Before leaving to Hell’s Canyon Adventure on a 40’ long jet boat with 900 hp, Frank gave us some words of advice: wear clothing you don’t mind getting soaked, protect cell phone, car keys, wallet, etc. in zip lock bags, don’t run with scissors, etc.

“Visit Downtown Straight Ahead” (The cemetery is probably not the best location

for this welcome sign)

8/17, Night at Bishop, CAAn LA County contingent led by John La Bella and a San Diego County group led by Frank Tecca met in Bishop for the first night. John’s route went through winding, undulating roads passing through Ridgecrest. Was this to point out the epicenter of the latest major So. Cal. earthquake (magnitude, 7.1) or to bring back good memories of supporting Navy programs? I think the latter.

When we all met in Bishop, John handed Frank a gift from Rob: a TVS cap with the inscription “Trail Boss” embroidered on the back. Nice, and appropriate.

As a consequence, very few took cameras or phones. Did anyone get wet? Yes, Linda Tully on the trip down the river and Ken on the ride back. This 54 mile round trip had a couple of stops to see former ranch houses. When we returned it was 109º F. Our trip to the boat was a fun twisty ride along the river, so after the tiring boat ride there was some concern of staying awake on the ride back. Good news: once inside the car with the A/C turned on, we woke up and were able to enjoy the ride back.

Scenic drive to the boat

The cars waited patiently for our return

Scenic drive to the hotel

Before we reached our hotel, the group took a rest stop at Council, ID. Almost every one bought an ice cream treat. As we were walking in, Anton noticed that one of the local customers was carrying a hunting knife and a holstered pistol. Anton asked him if we could get a picture of him and he agreed. When he was finished filling gas cans, he introduced himself as a ranch foreman. He alsointroduced his sheep dog who helps him herd cattle. He was a former marine and said his body has a lot of titanium. We enjoyed listening to his stories and he ours. A friend of his took the group photo and said, “Smile when I say Cor-vette.” Everyone smiled and no one blinked.

8/21-22 Nights in Sandpoint, IDOn the way to Sandpoint, Frank took us through rich grain fields before coming to Coeur d’Alene, ID for lunch in a hotel overlooking the lake followed by a drive-through of the world famous local golf course with an island green.

The following day we went on the Selkirk Loop which is a 280 mile long journey through Idaho, Washington and Canada.

We had lunch at the Prestige Lakeside Resort in Nelson, BC.

After lunch we took the Kootenay Lake Ferry across Kootenay Lake It operates between Balfour and Kootenay Bay and is the longest free scenic ferry in the world.

8/23 Night in Salmon, IDOur drive from Sandpoint to Salmon was 348 miles and the scenery changed from forest to farm land. We reached the hotel late in the afternoon and found that Frank had made a mistake (our room had a view of the Salmon River). The restaurant with the best reviews had the fewest available seats, so a group, led by John La Bella, went to a place called Last Chance Pizza and Pasta.

8/24 Night in Ketchum, IDOur drive from Salmon to Ketchum was only 134 miles. To fill out the day and add some dust to our cars, Frank took us on a 5 mile dirt road to Bayhorse, a ghost town founded in 1877 after silver was discover-ed in the area.

8/25 Night in Twin Falls, IDThe distance from Ketchum to Twin Falls is only 81 miles, but there are sights to see along the way: Sun Valley Ski slopes by day, Craters of the Moon National Monument, Twin Falls Bridge, and the Shoshone Falls.

[I have been driving over this bridge since 1961. This was my first time for the falls.]

8/26 Night in Eli, NVOur drive from Twin Fall to Eli is 251 miles. The first rest stop was at Jackpot, NV. To help Anton stay awake on this rather uneventful segment, John offered him some 5-Hour Energy (extra strength)Medicine. After Anton took the medicine, Frank told him that he had tried it and it messed up his golf game and had undesir-able side effects. (Q. Where did John get this medicine? A. He found it in the casino parking lot.) Results? Anton was alert during the trip and didn’t have a 3 putt.

Our final stop was the Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Eli. It was very hot.

Those that remained in the air-conditioned depot (mostly the gals) saw a video on how to make a steam engine. Those that went down the tracks to see the locomotives got hot and dirty. I’m not quite sure which group won.

8/27 Night in Henderson, NVOur drive from Eli to Henderson was 259 miles. The first rest stop was at Pioche, NV. After the restroom, the point of interest was the Lincoln County Museum.

Frank found a great place for lunch in Alamo, NV called The Timbers. To thank the Teccas for planning this run, everyone paid for Frank and Gloria’s lunch, a bottle of Honey Jack Daniels and some cash. They accepted everything, but donated the cash to the two car clubs (The Vette Set and the North Coast Vettes).

Thanks, Frank & Gloria, for a fun and very well planned trip.

CORVETTE POTLUCK PICNIC

The Corvette Summer (sounds like a movie title) Picnic was a great success. Members from 3 Southern California Vette clubs attended, Southwest Corvettes, Corvette Super Sports, and The Vette Set. The pot-luck picnic took place at El Dorado Park, a great venue.

Yours truly, the “Sarge”, spoke with several members of the other 2 clubs and found we share a common interest, the Corvette. The food was great (we dug the BBQ brats and dogs). Please, take food home, it was more than we could eat. Also, the low-down is that next year will be bigger and better. We had a drawing with prizes so be part of the WE and have a blast next year.
