Our Car Show April 30, 2016 was a great success. Even a rain out on our first date, April 9, didn’t stop most pre-registered cars, trucks and motor homes from joining us on April 30. Of the 152 pre-registered vehicles 102 showed up for the event and 20 the day of the show for a total of 122 vehicles.. There were 62 fantastic Corvettes, 56 great GM vehicles and 4 Display only vehicles.

The entire net proceeds of this show are going to So Cal ROC students enrolled in automobile curricula. Almost $4000 will help these students pursue their chosen career . The Vette Set should be proud that they have supported new young people with an interest close to theirs. Thank You Bonniegay Bacon for being our liaison to So Cal ROC.

Our 41st Car Show event tee shirt featured

Dick Whitford’s “Big Bertha”, The

Ficquette’s Chevelle, and George Person

Jr’s long lost GTO. Each pre-registered

entrant received a shirt. And all volunteers

who signed up to work our show received

one. And we would like to give a big Thank

You to Jerry for arranging for the tees and

working out the tee design. Tee design costs

were offset by generous contributions from

WIN and Ruby’s. The center decal shown on

the Car Show plaque below was the main

design for the back of the event tee.

48 participant trophies were awarded at our

show. Chuck Hammer was the craftsman

who fabricated the trophies. We received

many complements from participants and

others about their design uniqueness and

high quality. A sample of this year’s trophy is

also shown below.

Santiago Chavez was our man in charge of heavy lifting. He and his crew assembled the pop-ups, tables and chairs and got them all arranged before our show began.

Jerry Clement was our MC along with help from our DJ, Michael Lopez.

John La Bella and Tony Giamberdino were Chief Judges for Corvettes and all other GM vehicles respectively. Judging is probably the toughest job during the show ferreting out the best of the best within the show’s time constraints. Thanks go to all the judges for a job well done.

Raul Rodrigues headed up the judging tallies. Several club members jumped in to help out so the trophies could be awarded in a timely fashion. Thank You all.

Dick Whitford organized the event parking which was complicated by having Vette Set members parking with the contestants. However, that gave our members the added joy of having their cars appreciated by

Page 4: Vette Gazettemedia.virbcdn.com/files/05/c03eab05016aa3c9-May2016... · 2016. 5. 19. · Gazette 221 Paseo De Suenos The Vette Set, Inc. Redondo Beach, CA Est. 1965 90277 MAY 2016

everyone present. If we include Vette Set cars we had over 150 cars at our Show.

Don Popovich and Rob Weimer volunteered for advertisement and vendors. Unfortunately The City of Redondo Beach did not want vendors at our April 30 rain date thus we had to cancel them. We thank you for your effort. Linda and I were charged with reservations. So we put in our time before the show and during. And we enjoyed the experience!

We want to especially Thank Linda Glaza for her efforts. Linda did all the mailings of the requests for sponsor support for silent auction, raffle and goodie bag items. She also mailed the show invitations to all previous participants. She prepared all the raffle items and baskets, the silent action tables, and goodie bags. Linda then setup the raffle and silent auction booths. I can only imagine the hours she put in to help make this show the success that it was.

The Vette Set members who contributed their time to the Show should be proud of their efforts. This was a great show, made so by the involvement of many Vette Set members. It showed!!

The Car Show Committee thanks all member volunteers, donations and sponsors of this our 41st Annual Car Show. Please see our web site www.thevetteset.com for photos of the Show. These official photos were taken by John Kern and others, Thank you.

With heritage-inspired design clues combined with track-focused chassis and suspension elements, the new Grand Sport builds on a legacy established in 1963, when five Grand Sport race cars were built under the direction of the Corvette's first chief engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov.

Congratulations to the lucky winners!

The following is the NCCC West Coast Region Calendar for 2016. Next month, I swear to Zora, I will write something for this column.

Jack Walter

NCCC

GOVERNOR Jack Walter

Saturday May 7th I attended my second meeting of West Coast Region of the NCCC, representing TVS. I'd like to thank former members Carl Cewinski and Jerry Foreman for making me feel welcome and helping to understand how the region functions. The biggest news from the meeting was the cancellation of the 2017 National Convention scheduled for Bowling Green KY. Ongoing legal proceedings with the Motorsports park and neighbors made contracting with the

hotel unfeasible. There will be an attempt to schedule some type of a scaled down event, possibly in St. Louis. In other news, as we voted at TVS, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital was chosen as the national charity to receive support from NCCC.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all our new TVS friends that have made Patrice and I feel so welcome ever since we started attending events in December 2014 after getting our convertibili rosso in October that year. You have all enhanced our enjoyment of our Corvette. Enjoy exercising your copy of "America's Sportscar" on a nice twisty road soon!

Cheers, Jack

MEMBER REPORT

10

The following is an article about our member, Tom Nagle, from the April 22, 2016 edition of “The Friday Flyer,” a Canyon Lake News newsletter. Tom and his wife, Wilma, are residents of Canyon Lake.

‘A’ stands for April, Airplane, Aviation: Thomas Nagle

Thomas J. Nagle has been involved in both the building and flying of aircraft. He received his private pilot training at Douglas Aircraft, where he also worked in design, supervision, operations, training and marketing. As a private pilot from 1966 to 2006, he flew mostly Cessna aircraft.

Tom has flown all over the United States and, in describing a “harrowing moment” as a pilot, he says, "While flying my aircraft, another airplane flew into my airspace, forcing me to make evasive maneuvers." Working for Douglas Aircraft, Tom worked on the DC8, DC9, DC10 and MD11. Among his proudest accomplishments while working at Douglas Aircraft was managing efforts to sponsor control of air- craft cabin air quality. He provided court testi- mony that was instru- mental in having smok- ing no longer allowed on airplanes due to the effects of secondhand smoke on flight attendants. Delta Airlines presented him with the Flying Colonel award "in recognition of outstanding support.“

In 2007, while working as a program manager for the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Wing at Los Angeles Air Force Base, Tom was a member of the Federal Aviation Administra-

tion representing civil and commercial GPS in the United States.

The front cover of the May 2007 “GPS World” trade journal featured Tom and described his work as follows: "As a member of the Federal Aviation Administration representing civil and commercial GPS in the U.S. Air Force's GPS Wing, Tom communi- cates the equities of the civil and commer- cial GPS users to his military counter- parts, and watches acquisition efforts to protect those equi- ties. In coming years, this effort will track acquisition of the next-generation sat- ellite and ground systems, transition to the improved ground segment, completion of launching the remaining IIR-M satellites, and the successful deployment of the IIF satellites.“

Tom says he was honored to be on the cover of “GPS World” magazine featuring "50+ Leaders to Watch." He's also had the privilege of attending many satellite launches at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Tom was a Canyon Lake City Councilman in the last half of the 1990s. He had to resign as mayor after taking a job with the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington DC.

He provided court test- imony that was instru- mental in having smok- ing no longer allowed on airplanes due to the effects of secondhand smoke on flight attendants. Delta Airlines presented him with the Flying Colonel award "in recognition of outstanding support.“

David Tavares led a trip to…

MOHAVE MAGNUM

APRIL 10, 2016

David Tavares organized a trip to the Mojave Air & Space Port. On a runway, he was able to approach the takeoff speed of a 747 with a takeoff weight of 800,000 pounds.

Rob Weimer led our group to Laughlin to attend the 19th “Gambler’s Classic” sponsored by Corvettes of Bakersfield. Before departing from Krispy Kreme, a vote was taken to decide the Barstow location for lunch: fast food at the Lynnwood exit or Mexican food at Casa Jimenez. The latter was the winner.

It was a pleasant drive. As in previous years, Jimmy & Adele pealed off into Harrah’s Club and the rest of us headed to the low rent district.

There were over 200 Corvettes at the event with categories separ-ated into genera-tions C1-C7. Every attendee was able to vote. Hal Vatcher drove his ‘62 from Brecken-ridge, leaving be-hind a snow storm.

GAMBLER’S CLASSIC LAUGHLIN, NEVADA APRIL 14-16, 2016

The trip was worth it, Hal won his class

Friday night was the big dinner followed by live music from Bakersfield. The musicians tipped their hat to the Bakersfield sound made famous by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard before heading to rock and roll.

On Saturday night, Janice & Kenny Whitaker, long time club members and Bullhead City residents, in- vited us over for hors d’oeuvres. Afterward, we took them out to dinner at an Italian restaurant.

HISTORICAL REPORT This was a fun trip and it was good to see the Whitakers. In years past, they have been very generous by opening their house to Vette Set members, even to new members like myself, who didn’t meet them until after they moved from the South Bay.

When Sharon & I were checking out of the hotel on Sunday morning we ran into three familiar faces in the lobby. One was Hal Vatcher, clutching his trophy, and wondering if it would fit in his C1. The other two were Bill and Janet Swanson from my home town of Forsyth, Montana (population 1,777). Bill and I grew up two doors from each other and both worked on a railroad tie gang in the summer of 1960. Bill said that Don Laughlin provided them a suite, airfare and meals. (I guess this makes Bill the class “Jimmy.”) We told them that we would see them at the class reunion this summer and Bill said he would provide a set of loaner golf clubs. Pat
