July Meeting Minutes
The July meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Tom Hoeppner.
Guests were introduced by Diane
Stermer. James and Cheryl Beatty were voted in as new members.
Treasurer’s Report Lorren Loewen
reported on the fund balances and available funds.
June Meeting Minutes –With a
motion by Walt Jenkins and 2nd
by Chris Capshaw, the June meeting minutes were approved as printed in the July newsletter.
New Cars, Upgrades & Misc. - Jerry Ludke enthusiastically reported
new race tires! Seems they are sticky, but not pushy, just wonderful. Jim Nile
matter-of-factly reported an additional 5,000 miles on their new 1996 Corvette, and they had fun doing it. Roger Miller’s “pumpkin” (Atomic
Orange) is back on the race track. After new engine, and subsequent repairs, he is back! Pete Olejnik has
the 1966 Vette back from repairs after losing a right front tire and wheel very inconveniently while in traffic. No more grousing, they now have a 2000 triple black convertible Corvette to enjoy. David and Shauna Hall were
back for a visit from Durango, CO. Seems they were visiting behind the scenes in the Daniels Long Chevrolet nursery, (garage), getting first view of their new baby - a 2014 white Corvette with black racing stripes and red interior. Congratulations and very nice!
Club’s Charity The Board received
one nomination for a charity to be presented at the meeting and voted on to receive the net profits from the 2014 Dealer Appreciation Car Show at Daniels Long September 6
th. The
Board verified all 501c(3) requirements were met. Jerry Ludke gave a brief presentation on Urban Peak, a Colorado Springs organization. It is a 20-bed facility for 15-20 year old teens. Providing study and GED opportunity, job help, and counseling, their goal is to get the teens back on a stable track.
Without any “nay” votes, the motion passed. Urban Peak will be the recipient of the net profits from the September car show. For 2015, a new charity nomination process will occur as is done annually
according to the Club’s Standing Rules.
Garage Tours – Due to busy month,
Vicki Ury reported no garage tour for July. There will be a garage tour August 21
st, more details to follow.
Ft Carson wants us back. September 11
th. They have a great automotive
facility and it allows a chance for conversation and visit with the soldiers. And, free food. Ft Carson sets it up and supplies great food. Mark your calendar.
Highway Beautification Project –
Tom Ury volunteered to take the chairperson responsibility for the Highway Beautification project.
Governor’s Report – Rik Noring
spoke to the recent rash of breaking cars at events. Must be cyclical, and a matter of drivers choosing to push hard in competition. We don’t want to discourage newcomers. All events are for the trying at your own risk and comfort level. CSCC Club Photo – It is time for a
new Club photo. Tom Hoeppner and Mike Neufeld have been discussing options. Anyone with an idea, contact Tom. Watch for more information in the near future. Upcoming Events- As always, check

Dear Club Members,
We all join the Colorado Springs Corvette
Club for different reasons. Our level of
interest may change from time-to-time, our
availability to participate may change for one
reason or another, but one fact remains, the
members make the Club what it is.
As members, we share some responsibility at
whatever level of our participation. There are
no wrong levels of participation, just different.
Every organization requires leadership, and
at this time of year, we look to members who
have the skill level and willingness to take on
an officer position for a defined period of time.
Being an officer is not just about accepting a
nomination and getting voted into an office. It
is about taking defined responsibilities
serious and serving as an example for other
members. Officers are expected to attend
meetings; to promote club events; and to
attend those events (even those where you
may not have an interest). Officers are also
expected to pay attention to the Club’s
business, slate of activities; financial
considerations; best interests; and in general,
the well-being and future of the Colorado
Springs Corvette Club.
While there’s certainly the business side of
taking an officer position, it also comes with
great satisfaction. Officers help new and
experienced chairpersons plan/organize
events, and there’s a great feeling of
satisfaction when an event is a success for
the members.
Our Club needs good officers, and even if you can’t consider being an officer at this time, please consider reading the duties trusted to your officers.

By-Laws CSCC Officers See page 6
There have been a lot of successes this past year, and next year, it is hoped you will help lead the Club to even more opportunities and fun. (If you have questions about one or more of the positions, contact any officer for more detailed information.) Nominations for officers will take place at the September meeting and at the beginning of the October meeting, prior to the vote.

Places To Be Brave---Places To Survive
Garage Night -Johnny Martin’s Car Central June 19, 2014 By Larry Valentine
There are video games and then there are simulators. What was experienced was far removed from a video game. Out of a thousand race track possibilities what could be more appropriate than every driver competing on a race course near and dear to most people in the Colorado Springs area - the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. That was exactly what happened Thursday June 19
th in downtown
Colorado Springs at Johnny Martin’s Car Central. The experience was far more challenging than focusing on a TV screen. It was sitting in a racing style seat while scanning three large screens that gave a panoramic view of the most famous hill climb in the world. Not only did the race track unfold before the driver, but the guardrails, barriers, landscape, and background, including views of Woodland Park, Rampart Range, and Cripple Creek, were realistically recreated. Below the W’s one could be over aggressive, run off the road, and still recover but once above that point it was entirely possible to launch into open space and roll down to Manitou Springs, never to recover…let the driver beware. Most of the driving experience did not come without some penalties which included but was not limited to perspiration, vertigo, dizziness, and nausea. But on the other hand, everyone said, “Wow, what an experience!” Names were drawn to determine the running order and soon drivers were settling in for an 11 to15 minute dash to the clouds. While some drivers set unusual records, Most Time Off The Road – Gail Creighbaum; Most 360’s But Still On The Road – Rik Noring; others would start with a smooth and fast pace then change to ragged and slower as they neared the summit, as with John Gue. There were a few Jekyll and Hyde types, like Jerry Ludke, who beforehand logically figured out exactly how to make a smooth and fast ascent but as soon as the foot hit the throttle it was “Katie Bar The Door!” As one might expect the Young Guns, Anna Valentine and Jay Valentine turned the fast times but surprisingly enough Old Gun Tom Hoeppner, posted a close second. Middle Gun, Rik Noring, and several Old Guns beat each other up for third place. The racing started as soon as everyone arrived and shortly thereafter, the club set up a wonderful buffet so that while some were racing others could eat which kept the evening going at a quick pace. On display was Bill Ryan’s 1966, 427 Roadster and Tom and Vickie Ury’s 2014, Z51 Coupe along with several other race and custom cars. A Huge thanks to Johnny Martin’s Car Central for the opportunity to experience their facility and to Gwenda Valentine for organizing a fun night out. Attending – Rick Prescott w/guest Dan Selman, Bill Ryan w/ guest Jenna Thompson, Dick Ary, Lorren and Laurie Loewen, Jerry and Denise Phillips, Steve & Janet, Lauren and Erica Rummel, Al & Nancy Wile. Front Range Airport Autocross
The June 22nd autocross at the Front Range Airport was attended by enthusiastic Colorado Springs Corvette Club members. Those who rallied to the event where the Urys, Hoeppners, Loewens, Walt Jenkins, Rik Noring, Carol Reel, Roger miller, Jerry Ludke and Kitty Divis. The track was, as usual, fast and furious and loads of fun. The weather was probably the best we have had out there for a race. It was an overcast day with mild temperatures and the rain held until we left. The competition was intense at times. Some times as close as 2000th of a second between competitors. All and all it was a fabulous day spent with equally fabulous friends! by Kitty Divis

Drive-Your-Vette-to-Work-Day –by Tom Ury
On Friday, June 27th, 41 CSCC members and a half dozen or so
representatives of the Rocky Mt Corvette Social Club gathered at the Hub Diner and Car Wash off of Garden of the Gods Road to celebrate the anniversary of the first Corvette to come off the assembly line in Detroit in 1953 and to participate in the annual “Drive Your Corvette to Work Day”.
Around 11:00 am, the Corvettes started to roll into the Hub Diner. A small backup due to the sheer number of cars being parked made for an awesome sight! The weather cooperated for the most part, a little cloudy and warm, but not windy and a few sprinkles sent several of us to the cars to roll up windows.
Michelle, at the Hub, is a wonderful host. She always goes out of her way to see that we have great parking and a great time. Here, after a car wash, she wipes off the sprinkles on Lynn Wittrock’s car.
The event lasted about 2 hours, allowing us to catch up on all the new hardware people brought and renew acquaintances. 35 cars showed up along with 45 or so drivers and passengers, and every generation of Corvette was represented.
Everyone enjoyed the event. A suggestion was made - having another one again this year and maybe do a top-down drive to the Hub from the Garden of the Gods. I will keep you posted on the idea.
Members & family guests attending: Bob Balink, Gail & Jane Creighbaum, Tom & Vicki Ury, Nick Renfro, Chris Capshaw & Jonathan, Bud & Anne Silvers & Clem, Paul Thompson, Dan & Linda Miller, Steve Bello, Patrick Kierman, Jeff & Liz Scott, TJ, Donna, & Amanda Larson, Larry & Gwenda Valentine, Wes, & Sophia, Pete & Alta Olejnik, John Gue, Howard Bufkin & Michelle, Rick Prescott, Lynn Wittrock, Lorren & Laurie Loewen, Thomas Lynch, Tom & Barb Hoeppner, Jeff, Smith, Jerry Ludke, Johnny Harris, Joe Horvath.

Speed Week – June 28th
Airstrip Attack Tom Ury driving Wayne Hoskin’s ZR1,proudly representing CSCC at event with 2500 people and 100 cars registered to race.
We also ran another ZR1 (a black one, owned by Skip's neighbor) from a 40-Roll and got beat. We beat the same ZR1 from a standing start however. A 40-roll is where both cars match speeds at 40mph (pre-determined by the drivers) and 1/10 of a mile down the track is another flag where we both accelerate hard to the finish. Speeds are obviously going to be less when doing that as it is done within the ½ mile given. We made 7 runs. Top speed for the day was a Nissan GTR, heavily modified, doing 209mph. Additionally, ran a Lamborghini Gallardo against a 60-Roll and beat him by half a length. Wayne's car is rated at 638HP and is a 2010. Jeff & Liz Scott, nephew, and Joe Horvath all got rides, as well as Wayne. By Tom Ury
July 4th
Monument Parade…… by Pete Olejnik
The parade went off without a hitch on July 4, 2014 with fourteen Corvettes, thirteen of the Corvettes belonged to club members and we had one was from a resident of Monument with a C-7. Everyone seemed to have a good time with approximately 10,000 spectators. Thanks to Jean Munninghoff in her silver, convertible Corvette for transporting "Miss Outstanding Teen Monument" and her very small entourage.
and BBQ at Bochnak’s
following the parade we met up for the annual burgers, brats, and hot dogs. Enjoying the BBQ were:Mike & Winnie Bochnak, Bud & Anne Silvers, Craig & Diane Wisniewski, Tom & Barb Hoeppner, Rik & Florece Noring, Ricky & Dagny, Jerry & Diane Stermer, Walt Jenkins, Lynn
Wittrock, Jiim & Kelly Zajicek, Patrick Kiernan & Marilyn Day, Mike & Diana Dittman, Nick & Susan Renfro, Jean Munninghoff, Pete & Alta Olejnik, Dan Schuck, and Gwenda Valentine. A few family guests and friends joined in the fun.
Keystone DCA Challenge – July 5th
& 6th
“OH THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF …Mufflers”!!! As the Front Range temperatures rose well into the 90’s; the weather in Keystone was a balmy 75 to 80 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. The sun was shining down on the CSCC as the racers showed their stuff.
The CSCC was well represented at the annual Denver Corvette Association Keystone Challenge, a two day autocross event. Driving for
the Club was: Walt Jenkins, Anne Lewis, Roger Miller, Kitty Divis, Carol Reel, Rik Noring, Gina and Jeff McCutcheon, Laurie and Lorren Loewen, Tom and Vicki Ury, and Don and Cindy McCoy. Barb and Tom Hoeppner were the designated ‘Cheer Leaders’ for the weekend of squealing tires. The tight, twisting and cone littered autocross course design challenged the best of us. I believe one car hit 6 cones in one run – this driver will remain anonymous! Of course, we must mention the wonderful Saturday evening BBQ at Don and Cindy McCoy’s home in Silverthorne. It was attended by all competitors from TORCA, DCA, and CSCC. It was a night of good food, good conversation and a few ‘car stories’. We also celebrated Jeff McCutcheon’s Birthday on
Saturday night. His age will remain anonymous! A BIG Thank You to the McCoy’s for hosting the lively evening. By the way, we have the third installment picture of the “Hokey Pokey” – we put our heads in this time!! by Vicki Ury
Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade
Well, pardners, CSCC was well represented at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade on July 8
th. A large posse
of Corvette Cowboys and Cowgirls (plus 1 Corvette Clown) saddled 18 Corvettes representing all seven series, and let the
horses roar down Tejon Street. Things looked dreary at first because of some thunder, lightning, and a rain shower which lasted about an hour. However, as luck would provide, the weather moved on and the skies cleared enough to allow us to dry the cars off, put the tops down, and thrill the rodeo enthusiasts. Our members waved to the gathered throngs of people, while artfully dodging the material left in the road by the beasts who preceded us. Don’t
they make horse diapers? Anyway, when the parade was over the participants headed to Johnny’s Navajo Hogan for an after parade get together. All were in agreement Carol Reel
did a wonderful job of setting up and organizing this event. Thanks to Rik Noring and the Corvette Center for sponsoring the parade, and Rick and Dagny Noring for carrying the CSCC banner.
From standing start, full ½ mile, actual official best run speed 146.32 mph, hitting 150 mph past the finish line.

An Interview with Rick Holzwarth By Diana Dittman
How long have you been a CSCC member? 4 years
What Corvette(s) do you currently own? A 1989 coupe. Marital Status? Married to Pam for 35 years this November. How did you meet? We met in Italy while stationed in the Air Force at San Vito Air station. I was a fireman. I was walking back from the store and she was walking to the store. I saw her and said to myself I should talk to her. So the first thing that came to mind was, “Do you know when Mother’s Day is?” She answered me and we went our separate ways. Later on it just so happened that she came to the firehouse to visit another fireman that she was dating at the time. This fireman was not treating her very well so I started talking to her. We dated for 8 months, and married (in Italy). The ceremony was in Italian and included the 12 articles of marriage. A local magistrate married us and wore a sash with the colors of the Italian flag on it. He seemed more interested in getting his picture taken than performing the ceremony. We also had to post a public notice for anyone that wanted to protest the marriage.
Where are you from? Rick is from Pennsylvania. He has also lived in Missouri, Alaska, Italy, Texas, Illinois, and Colorado. Pam is from New York. She also lived in Germany, Spain, Italy, Florida, and Colorado.
Employment? Rick is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant. He now works in civil service at Shriver Air Force Base for squadron quality assurance. Pam has been teaching 3
rd
grade for 18 years and will be retiring soon. She was in the Air Force from 1979-1983.
Kids? They have one son, Ryan, who is a police officer in Woodland Park and is married to Gail and Jane Creighbaum’s daughter. Their daughter, Kristen, is a director for the Outreach Program.
Pets? They have 2 miniature Schnauzers, Ben and Lily.
Favorite club activity? Car shows.
Hobbies? Rick’s is his Corvette and trap and skeet shooting. Pam plays tennis and when she retires she hopes to teach it. What is the best vacation you ever took? As a family they visited Pennsylvania and had many side trips including going to Gettysburg and to Three Rivers Stadium before it was torn down. Being a Pittsburg Steelers fan it was like going to Mecca…….
Dream Corvette? A C7 or a 1963 Convertible, red w/white.
How did your love of Corvettes come about? Since I was a kid I’ve always loved them.
Anything else you would like to add? Gathering information from members of the club has been very helpful. Thanks for the interview Rick!!
SINKHOLE FATE DECIDED
& OTHER NCM NEWS
On June 25th the National Corvette
Museum’s Board of Directors presented three options: 1. Fill the sinkhole and replace the floor 2. Keep
the entire sinkhole as it is or 3. Keep a smaller portion of the hole
open. The Board decided to move forward with the third option, pending review of further information. The sinkhole opening would be about 25’ x 45’ wide by 30’ deep, providing views down into a portion of the cave, showing some existing ground and rock face, with a dirt embankment to display one or two of the sunken Corvettes. Final modifications would depend on influences such as humidity and temperature control on all the Corvettes displayed, along with associated utility costs. If the Museum would decide to end the exhibit at some point, the sinkhole could be filled and the Sky Dome returned to its original configuration. As reported in last month’s Vette Set, the Museum was close to having 3 million visitors… and sure enough, the 3-millionth, from White House, TN, arrived on June 9
th. I wonder how long it will be
before the 4-millionth visitor shows up. The Museum announced on July 3
rd that, due to circumstances
beyond its control, window sticker sales have been suspended. The company producing the stickers has been experiencing problems and can’t fulfill additional orders. The Museum doesn’t know when the service will resume, but I’ll let you know if-and-when it does. Bloomington Gold’s “Great Hall” was established in 2010 to recognize the 50 most influential people, cars and organizations that have had a pioneering influence on the Corvette world. The Museum was one of the proud 10 inducted into the “Great Hall” during the Gold Event on June 27- 29
th at the University of Illinois.
The departure plan for the Colorado Caravan to the National Corvette Museum’ s 20
th Anniversary Celebration August 28-30
has been announced by Richard Loch, Caravan Captain. After the August 25
th registration from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Target
parking lot, 2171 Prairie Center Parkway, Brighton, CO 80601, the first Corvette will depart at 9:00 a.m. New events are being added to stops along the way, one of which is a BBQ get-together in Columbia, MO. Richard told me the Colorado Caravan is currently the largest with 120 people, and once we join up with other caravans in Columbia, he expects participants to exceed 800. That’s a lot of Corvettes to enjoy! I’ll have $10 raffle tickets for a 2014 Torch Red Coupe at the August meeting. The winning ticket will be drawn on August 30
th.
