The 2015 Forum of the International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG) will be conducted as a roundtable discussion. The Forum will provide insights from INSAG and other experts on the issues associated with the potential of external events such as earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes to impact the safe operation of a nuclear power plant. Presentations will be made by invited experts to inform the audience and to stimulate discussion. The floor will then be opened to the audience for discussion.

Standards (BSS)

The International Basic Safety Standards, as well as the EURATOM Basic Safety Standards, have both recently been revised. This side event will give an introduction to the International BSS andEURATOM BSS, a case study on how to ensure implementation in practice, focusing on radiation protection in medicine, and discuss a way forward towards a coherent international radiation protection regime.

providing quality and safety in medical uses of

ionizing radiation

This event will give an introduction to the key role of the medical physicist, the potential consequences of a lack of clinically qualified medical physicists in medical facilities and what the IAEA can do to support Member States.

Accomplishments of the Coordination Group for

Uranium Legacy Sites (CGULS) —

Central Asian Perspectives

Past uranium mining and milling activities have left many countries with an environmental legacy that can have human health consequences – many of which have yet to be properly addressed. In 2012, CGULS was formed to provide technical coordination for national and multilateral activities directed towards remediation of uranium legacy sites in Central Asia, and elsewhere. At present, manynational and international activities that contribute to remediation of uranium legacy sites in Central Asia are being carried out. CGULS has assisted countries in Central Asia to strengthen national technical capacities.

This side event will report on successes of CGULS to date, on plans going forward, provide perspectives of local representatives from Central Asia and on a new initiative to create a multilateral fund to support remediation of uranium legacy sites in that region.

Security of Nuclear and Other Radioactive

Material in Transport, the IAEA Practical Approach

The Agency has developed a transport security program to assist Member States in implementing international transport security requirements and recommendations into their national frameworks and to assist them in the practical implementation to strengthen transport security arrangements. At this event, participants will be briefed on the current IAEA activities and future plans to strengthen nuclear transport security worldwide.

Ten Year Anniversary of the IAEA's Incident and

Emergency Centre

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the IAEA’s Incident and Emergency centre is hosting a panel discussion focussing on lessons learnt and the future of Emergency Preparedness and Response.

Development

Candidate Sourcing and Recruitment Strategy

The Agency relies on a highly educated professional workforce with skills and experience that are often not easily found in the job market. This event will present an update of the Agency’s approach to candidate sourcing and recruitment strategy with a particular focus on applicants from under-represented and non-represented Member States and well qualified female applicants.



Treaty Event The Secretariat is organizing a Treaty Event aimed at promoting universal adherence to the multilateral treaties related to nuclear safety, security and liability for nuclear damage for which the Agency is depositary. This year’s Treaty Event will focus on the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material. When: Tuesday, 15 September, 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Women in All Things Nuclear — the Future Workforce

The Agency strives to be an employer of choice for highly qualified individuals across the globe and actively supports events and initiatives to address its goal of gender parity in all areas of the organization. This side event, first held in 2013 and co-hosted by the Department of Management and the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, will address the importance in developing an emerging workforce to ensure the sustainable and continuous delivery of the peaceful applications of nuclear science, technology and policy. An open forum with invited speakers will discuss the trend of retaining young professionals, including young women, in the nuclear field. Further, it will discuss the challenges and opportunities organizations face in the ability to source, attract and retain young women who have completed university studies in these areas.

Cooperation Forum — Nuclear Power Generation

in the Next Decade: Challenges and Solutions

for 2015–2025

The forum will discuss the status of operating NPPs for safe, reliable and efficient power generation, and in particular technical and programmatic aspects of NPP operation, such as plant performance and system health; effective operation and maintenance management; human resource development programme; social and economic impacts to long term operation of nuclear power plants; and post-Fukushima action and response to robustness and compliance.

(GNSSN) Plenary Meeting

Developing solutions for deep geological disposal

of high level waste and spent nuclear fuel

Safe radioactive waste management solutions are in operation around the world, with the exception of deep geological disposal for high level waste or spent nuclear fuel. A solid technical and scientific foundation has, however, been developed for the latter, for all major types of host rock formations. This event will highlight the work of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture in climate-smart agriculture as it relates to soil and water management as well as the role of the Agency’s Department of Technical Cooperation in enhancing national and regional capacity in Member States. Future challenges and the crucial roles of isotopes in addressing climatechange issues will be highlighted

New Initiative for Cancer Management — A Cancer Staging App

Developed by the IAEA

The Agency has developed a unique app for cancer staging that allows harmonized communication about cancer, which will facilitate appropriate and personalized care among multidisciplinary teams involved in cancer management. This event will show, by means of clinical cases and examples, the impact of the Agency’s TNM (tumour, node, metastasis) staging application tool.

Global Status of Spent Fuel and

Radioactive Waste Inventories and

Management Strategies: The Status and Trends Project

The IAEA, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency and the European Commission are collaborating on a two-year project to produce a report on current global inventories of spent fuel and radioactivewaste and on strategies for the management of these materials. This event will provide an opportunity for Member States to familiarize themselves with the progress of the project.

The Fukushima Daiichi Accident – The Report by the Director General and

the five technical volumes

The Fukushima Daiichi Accident, the Report by the IAEA Director General and five technical volumes, is the result of an extensive international collaborative effort involving five working groups with about 180 experts from 42 Member States with and without nuclear power programmes and several international bodies.

With the breadth of coverage and detailed description and analyses, the Report by the Director General and the five technical volumes provide a description of the accident and its causes, evolution and consequences, based on the evaluation of data and information from a large number of sources available at the time of writing.

The side event will consist of two parts: the presentation of the Report by the Director General and the five technical volumes and the panel discussion. In the first part, the key elements of the Report by the Director General will be presented by the Deputy Director General, Head of Nuclear Safety and Security, Denis Flory and an overview of the technical volumes will be provided by the Co-Chairs of each Working Group. In the second part, the panel discussion involving the Working Group Co-Chairs will be moderated by the Special Coordinator of the Nuclear Safety Action Plan, Gustavo Caruso.

Water Security in a Changing Climate and the Role of Isotope Hydrology

Isotope hydrology plays a key role building the knowledge base for understanding the impact of climate change on rainfall and on the assessment of groundwater resources. Together with satellite-basedobservations of depleting groundwater reserves, isotopic age of groundwater provides crucial information. This side event will present an overview of recent changes and their impact on watersecurity, as well as the role of isotope hydrology.



European Master of Science in

Nuclear Engineering Award Ceremony

For the fourth time, the IAEA is hosting the European Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering (EMSNE) Award Ceremony of the European Nuclear Education Network Association (ENEN). Twenty-six laureates will receive the EMSNE Certificates this year. With this event, cooperation in nuclear education, training and research is further enhanced between the IAEA and ENEN.

ORGANIZED VISITS

The IAEA Laboratories in

Seibersdorf

16 and 17 September

On Wednesday, 16 September, and Thursday, 17 September, delegates (or persons designated by them) will have the opportunity to visit the Agency’s laboratories in Seibersdorf. On Wednesday, the focus of the visit will be the Safeguards Analytical Laboratories of the Department of Safeguards, and on Thursday, the visit will feature the Seibersdorf laboratories of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications. Information on all laboratories will be available to visitors on both days.

The laboratories, which are situated about 35 km southeast of Vienna, contribute to the Agency’s programmes with activities in the area of nuclear verification and in various areas of nuclear applications, such as plant mutation breeding, food safety, animal production and health, soil and water management and crop nutrition, the insect pest control, nuclear science and instrumentation, medical dosimetry, and terrestrial environmental monitoring. The nuclear applications laboratories provide training in these areas for scientists as well as analytical services to support and strengthen Member States’ laboratories. They also carry out applied and adaptive research to develop and improve nuclear techniques and technologies for transfer to Member States.

Registration for either visit may be made by 12.00 noon on Tuesday, 15 September, at the Information Desk, M building entrance, ground floor.

The assembly point for the visitors is the Information Desk at the entrance to M building, at 8.50 a.m. on each day. The visitors will return to the VIC each day at approximately 1.00 p.m.

For reasons of security and logistics, visitors will be required to use the transport means provided by the Agency, when applicable. The number of places available is limited.

The Incident and Emergency

Centre in the VIC

On Wednesday, 16 September, at 2.45 p.m. and on Thursday, 17 September, at 2.45 p.m., delegates (or persons designated by them) will have the opportunity to visit the Agency’s Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC), which is situated in the VIC. The IEC serves as the Agency’s focal point for responding to nuclear or radiological incidents and emergencies and for promoting improvement in Member States’ emergency response and preparedness. The visit will present the activities, infrastructure and communication procedures of the Agency’s IEC.

The assembly point is the Information Desk at the M building entrance, ground floor, at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 16 September, and at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday, 17 September.

The planned duration of each visit is one hour.

The Isotope Hydrology

Laboratory

15 September

On Tuesday, 15 September, delegates (or persons designated by them) will have the opportunity to visit the Agency’s Isotope Hydrology Laboratory, which is another of the nuclear applications laboratories and is situated in the VIC. The laboratory provides analytical support to the water resources programme, training for scientists from Member States and quality assurance services to isotope hydrology laboratories worldwide. It also develops hydrology laboratory instruments for transfer to Member States.

The visit will take place from 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m.

The assembly point is the Information Desk at the entrance to M building, at 1.50 p.m.

Visit to the Accredited

Testing Laboratories for

Individual Monitoring

15, 16 and 17 September

On Tuesday, 15 September, Wednesday, 16 September, and Thursday, 17 September, from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m., delegates (or persons designated by them) will have the opportunity to visit the accredited testing laboratories for individual monitoring which are located in the VIC.

The Radiation Safety Technical Services assess the occupational exposure of Agency staff and contracted experts for external sources of radiation and intakes of radionuclides and provide assistance to Member States through fellowships and technical advice. The visit offers a view of the Whole Body Counter Laboratory as well as all other laboratories, for instance those used for urine analyses and, alpha, beta and gamma spectrometry.

Registration for the visit should be made at the Information Desk, M building entrance, ground floor. The assembly point is the Information Desk at the M building entrance, ground floor, at 12.50 p.m. on each day. Due to space constraints, a maximum of 20 visitors can visit the laboratory each day.

Verification activities carried out by the Department of Safeguards are supported by a variety of technologies and instruments. Safeguards equipment provides verification capabilities for in-field inspections, spanning from unattended radiation monitoring, surveillance techniques, sealing technologies and a wide range of portable devices. The tour will provide an overview of the facilities at IAEA headquarters. Registration for this visit should be made at the Information Desk, M building entrance, ground floor. The Assembly point for delegates is the Information Desk at the entrance to the M building at 1.50 p.m. on each day.
