    What is CCS?

    CCS is a sequence of technologies capture, transport, storage which has thepotential of preventing large quantities of CO2 from being released in theatmosphere.

    - One of the leading technologies directly related to CO2 emissions mitigation.

    - Has the potential to reduce the overall cost of emissions mitigation plan.

    - Has been rated among the priorities of the European Research Council.

    - Has been officially contextualized through the introduction of the DIRECTIVE

    2009/31/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council.

    - Has been identified by the IPCC as vital part of a portfolio of options to

    mitigate global climate change.

    - Has been identified by the IEA as a technology for a more sustainable energy

    future.

    - All capture approaches are technically proven and viable.

    - All three capture options can be utilised for CCS with CO2 capture rates up to 90%.

    - Of the three available options, transport by pipeline is the most likely to be used in acommercial scale.

    - 6,000km of pipelines have been safely transporting CO2 in the USA for the last 20

    years

    CCS technologiesStorage Options

    - Deep saline reservoirs and depleted oil and gas fields are the most suitable for CO2storage, as their storage mechanisms are relatively better understood.

    - CO2 storage for EOR, presents additional economic benefits.

    The European CCS Demonstration Project Networkhttps://www.ccsnetwork.eu/

    Objectives

    - Best Practices and knowledge sharing.

    - Gain public confidence for CCS.

    - Common EU identity related to CCS.

    - Promote CCS, EU leadership and cooperation potential to non EU countries.

    - Create a prominent community of projects united in the goal ofachieving commercially viable CCS by 2020.

    Membership

    - EEPR (European Energy Program for Recovery) projects (currently).

    - Other CCS demonstration projects are invited to join.

    - Environmentally safe capture and CO2 storage of CO2, as well as,demonstration projects of innovative renewable energy technologies.

    - Available funding: aprox. 3 billion EUR. (sale of carbon allowances of theEuropean Emissions Trading Scheme 10 EUR per allowance).

    - Evaluation carried out in stages.

    - Funding estimation: 6-8 CCS projects, 34 REP.

    - Only European Member States can participate.

    - Second call expected to be lunched within Q4 2013.

    - Develop a European distributed, integrated Research Infrastructure (RI),involving the construction and updating of research facilities Evaluation carriedout in stages.
