2016 National Safety Stand-Down
GCC Organizational Report
Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction
workers, accounting for 337 of the 874 construction fatalities recorded in 2014. Fall prevention safety
standards were among the top 10 most frequently cited OSHA standards, during fiscal year 2014. Those
deaths were preventable.
GCC participated in the 2015 Stand-Down which was a tremendous success, reaching more than 2.5
million workers. In 2016, OSHA's goal is to reach 5 million workers. If we meet this goal, we will have
touched more than half of the construction workers in the country. What a great way to raise
awareness and also continue to educate our workforce.
The goals for our 2016 National Stand-Down Campaign focused on four specific areas:
• Daily safety meetings using recommended toolbox talks
• Daily risk observations and cross-project risk observations
• Educating our future workforce on the importance of safety in construction
• Celebrating the positives with our employees
During the period May 2 - 6, 2016, Gilchrist Construction Company, in conjunction with other
construction companies across our nation, observed and participated in National Safety Stand-Down.

The purpose of this observation was to raise awareness of preventing fall hazards in construction.
Stand-Down is a voluntary event, sponsored by the US Department of Labor, Occupational Safety &
Health Administration (OSHA). GCC capitalized on this opportunity not only to focus on fall protection
awareness, but all categories of safe work including:
• Access & Egress
• Caught In/Between
• Equipment & Vehicles
• Excavation & Embankment
• Fall Protection
• Material Handling and Storage
• PPE
• Planning
• Traffic Control

Daily Safety Meetings
At GCC, we are proud to report our active participation in toolbox talks with employees about fall
hazards and the importance of fall prevention throughout the week of the campaign. Topics included:
• Aerial Lift Safety
• Guardrail Safety
• Open Areas: Floor, Roof, & Walls
Over 80% of our workforce, a total of 269 GCC employees, participated in Stand-Down toolbox talks
during our campaign, as represented in the table below.

Leading Indicators
Daily Risk Observations
Over the past week, GCC teams continued our practice of documenting daily risk observations in all
categories, by project and team. For the week of May 2 – 6, 2016, GCC teams documented 455 risk
observations in the following categories:

Cross-Project Risk Observations
An additional element of participation involved the transfer of knowledge across various GCC projects.
GCC team members visited GCC job sites, other than their own, to conduct risk observations, identify
hazards, and employ solutions.
Members of our leadership team and our external partners, Travelers and Marsh, actively participated
as well through project/division site visits to support our teams. This exercise was successful and
contributed to improved conditions in terms of safety, risk management, quality, and efficiency at the
face of the work.

Celebrating the Positives through Workforce Appreciation
Throughout our one-week safety campaign, we took some time to celebrate the positives and thank our
crews and teams for the work that they do. We served breakfast and/or lunch at our project sites.
