Greetings!
• My name is funsized (or Zach)• SWIFT President• 4th year EE student• Level 8 Technowizard
SWIFT
• Why the bad acronym?• It’s actually a cover for a obsession with
categorization and labels. Shhhhh.
Weren’t you a Telecommunications club?
• NAME CHANGE• The “T” now stands for technology• Why Technology?– Broader term– Allows more than just CIS– SWIFT does it all!– Focuses on awesome
What is an “Eboard”?
• Club leadership• Student volunteers (read: not paid)• Ensures pizza makes it here• Black shirts denote too much caffine and a
nick. Also ninjitsu.

Redefining Terms
• “But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him? I am a hacker, enter my world...”
def: Hacker (n)
• Hack (v): to cut or shape by or as if by crude or ruthless strokes.
• Popular Definition: To use one's skill in computer programming to gain illegal or unauthorized access to a file or network
• Zach’s Def: To manipulate or repurpose a system in a manner not intended by the creator of the system.
Hacker Values
• Thinks outside the box (then breaks inside)• Seek alternate paths• Discontent with accepted norms• Re-evaluates everything constantly
Ethical hacking
• The use of technical skills to manipulate a system constrained by moral and ethical boundries
Hacker Manifesto
Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for. I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike. “
Hacking: a way of life
• Hackers are a vehicle for change• Hackerspaces• Cons• Hackathons• CTF• A methodology
I wish I knew how to _______
• Learning takes effort• Skills to help:– Learn linux (e.g. live in linux for a day)– Learn basic networking (tcp, ftp, ssh, etc)– Hang out in #swift-help (or even #swift)– Research cool things! Then tell us what you want
to hear about.
