General Orders #2
Series 2015-2016 48540 Orchard Drive
February 2016 ____________ ____________ __ Mattawan, MI 49071
Dear Sisters,
Happy New Year to you all!! I hope you had a grand Christmas with family and friends and enjoyed the blessings
of the season. Thanks to all who included me in their celebration with Christmas cards. Your good wishes meant
so much. With the New Year, we must continue to honor our ancestors and insure that their sacrifices will never
be forgotten.
It was a very busy fall for me. I had lots of activities here in Michigan to attend including the Testimonial Dinner
in Lansing, Michigan for the National President of the ASUVCW Linda Kronberg. It was a great evening
celebrated with other leaders of the Allied Orders organizations. The dinner was good too!!
In November, I attended Remembrance Day in
Gettysburg. It was a fantastic day! The weather
was warm and sunny! I was honored to ride in
the parade in a wagon with the other National
Presidents of the Allied Orders! What a great
way to get acquainted with these ladies! It was
fun to be at the head of the parade and then watch
the whole parade pass by at the end. I was
especially proud to see our Daughters group, led
by Ellen Higgins PNP, with our flag, marching
behind me. I had the privilege of representing
the Daughters by laying a wreath at the Albert Woolson Monument as well as presenting Women Veterans Medals
to two Daughters from New York at the New York Monument at the National Cemetery. It was a whirlwind
weekend but I still felt the importance of remembering what took place there.
In December, great tragedy struck as my National Counselor, Irene Berg PNP passed away. Irene has always
been part of my Daughters’ life and a trusted Advisor. She was my Installing Officer. It was a thrill for me to be
able to honor her. She will be missed. I have asked Ellen Higgins PNP to be my Counselor which she has
generously consented to do. I'm thrilled to have her jump in and help out.
With the coming of the New Year, please remember that all those exciting Tent reports are due in to the various
Department Officers. These are found online at our National Website. Please be timely because Department
Officers must submit their reports to the National Officers to be compiled for the National Convention.
General Orders
If you haven’t already done so, please get the dates
and locations of your Department Conventions to me
so that I can plan my travel schedule for the spring.
Detached Tents, I would love to include some of you
too. Many of the Conventions occur on the same
weekends so I will send a representative if I can’t
make it. I wish I could clone myself to be at all of
your meetings! I am looking forward to meeting
many new daughters and hugging old friends too!
Please look in the GOs for the pin for my National
President's Project! I'm very excited to be sharing
this with you to raise funds for Gallaudet University.
The pin is a one inch disc with a hand in the middle
of the disc. The hand is forming the universal sign
for "I Love You" in sign language in the colors of our
flag with the "G" on the shield representing
Gallaudet. We presented scholarships in November
and they were very appreciated. Please support this
great cause!
Also, remember we are selling Jamberry nail wraps
for which we will realize a 30% profit on the sales
but they must be ordered from Sister Sue Liddie at
As we head into another year, please start thinking
about attending the National Convention in
Springfield, Illinois in July. We will be celebrating
the anniversary of the founding of the GAR. It will
be a time of remembering and renewing the promise
our founding sisters made to always remember the
boys in blue. It is also a great time!
Ladies, you are the heart and soul of our organization
and I am so proud of all you do! I am so proud to call
you my sisters. Thank you!!
In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty,
Sally Redinger

National Jr. Vice President
Thank you to all my fellow Sisters for giving me the
opportunity to further serve our organization as
National Junior Vice President. I am appreciating
the duties set forth as Jr. Vice and am proud of this
privilege.
Winter is just upon us and I am already looking
forward to our National Convention in Springfield,
Illinois this year.
In May, our organization will offer its annual United
States Service Academy Awards to an outstanding
graduating cadet during their graduation award
ceremony. We support the United States Military
Academy in West Point, NY, United States Naval
Academy in Annapolis, MD, United States Coast
Guard Academy in New London, CT and the United
States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point,
NY.
These Awards are as much an award for the chosen
Cadets, as it is for our National President, or her
representative, to present. In order to continue our
tradition of honoring these very deserving cadets, it
is my plea that your Tents and Departments strongly
consider donating to the United States Service
Academy Awards Fund to keep it a strong and an
ever growing account. All donations should come
through your Department Treasurer with a notation
that the donation is for the United States Service
Academy Awards and forwarded to our National
Treasurer, Susan Nitzel, PO Box 1176, Fort Morgan,
CO 80701-1176.
I thank you in advance for this most worthy cause.
In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty,
Caren Cleaveland, National Junior Vice President
GENERAL ORDERS #3 DEADLINE

National Patriotic Instructor
Thank you for electing me to serve this 2015-16 year
as your National Patriotic Instructor. It is a great
honor. I hope you will join me in enthusiastic
displays of patriotism at home and away. As Sisters
we can make a difference with our energies, enticing
other community members to participate with us in
ceremonies, memorials, parades, collections for
veterans, talking to children about our history and
other quiet good deeds.
Be sure to talk about our GAR Scholarship Fund and
remind your tent to contribute generously. Wouldn't
it be wonderful to be able to give several scholarships
a year at the maximum amount! We require lineal
descent, knowledge of our government and Civil
War histories, and good moral character and
scholastic standing. We need to make sure that the
application process is worth the effort. The
application form may be obtained from our website
home page under "Activities and
Scholarships". Winner(s) will be chosen by the
Scholarship Committee at National Convention in
July.
Huzzahs! to Arizona Detached Tent #1 for being
First to submit their Patriotic Instructor's Annual
Report. It is important for each Patriotic Instructor
to complete the report for 2015: Tents need to send
to their Departments no later than Feb.29; Detached
Tents send directly to me, also by Feb. 29;
Department P.I.'s send to me as soon as possible after
your Department Convention but certainly before
June 30. Thank you for keeping these
deadlines. The form is on our website, Members
Only section under Administrative Forms. As P.I.
National it is my responsibility to collect data from
you, amalgamate it and report our many and varied
activities to National Convention in July in
Springfield, Ill. I greatly anticipate learning of our
various enthusiastic patriotic endeavors and sharing
with you at Convention. See you there.
In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty
Joan B. Trafton, National Patriotic Instructor
National Chaplain
It is my honor to serve as your National Chaplain
during National President Sally Redinger’s 2015-16
Administration.
As mandated by the National Bylaws, it is my
responsibility as National Chaplain to: Be in charge
of raising funds for the Southern Memorial and
Wreath Fund, and serve on that committee and to
work to preserve the meaning of May 30th as
Memorial Day.
The annual Chaplain Report Form for Tents,
Detached Tents and Departments is on the Members
Only section of the National Website under
Administrative Forms. Please familiarize yourself
with this form, so that you will know what is
expected of you. Also on the National Website is a
form entitled Deceased Members which should be
sent to the me as National Chaplain, and others as
indicated on the form, as soon as possible after the
passing of a Tent Sister. In addition to the
information requested on this form, please include
the following information.
1) your contact information.
2) a copy of the obituary if possible.
3) age of the deceased.
4) years of membership in DUVCW & offices held.
5) name and address of the person (s) to whom a
condolence card should be sent.
6) any other information you think important and
relevant.
It is my privilege to honor our departed Sisters at the
National Convention, and to do that, I need your help
in filling out the necessary forms and sending them
to me in a timely manner. At the 2015 National
Convention, it was confirmed that the Chaplain’s
Report should include deaths for the calendar year,
so please, on your Annual Report, only list those
sisters who passed between January 1, 2015, and
December 31, 2015. This does not apply to sisters
who passed before January 1, 2015, who had not
been reported earlier, or to National Presidents who
pass after December 31st. The deaths which were
reported during the period January 1, 2015 and
Convention, 2015, and who have already been
remembered and honored at the 2015 convention,
will not be included again in 2016.
The Southern Wreath and Memorial Fund finances
the placing of wreaths at certain cemeteries in the
South on Memorial Day. This commemoration is in
accordance with the wishes of the Grand Army of the
Republic and is financed and administered in
conjunction with the National Women’s Relief Corp.
I believe this program is very important, and request
the help of any of our Sisters who are near one or
more of the cemeteries listed in the Appendix Section
of the Bylaws. Please contact the cemetery, ask who
is presenting the wreath and if no one is listed as the
presenter, volunteer to present the wreath yourself.
One way Tents could participate is by making a
donation to this fund as a memorial honoring
deceased members. These donations should be sent
directly to the National Treasurer, Susan Nitzel,
PO Box 1176, Fort Morgan, CO 80701-1176. Please send a note to me regarding your donation,
and I will send a card to whomever you designate
acknowledging the donation on behalf of your Tent
in honor of their loved one.
Memorial Day has unfortunately become part of a
three day holiday weekend rather than the solemn
day of remembrance for those who made the ultimate
sacrifice for our freedom and way of life. There are
many ways you can help restore Memorial Day to its
original date. I urge you to sign petitions on line and
contact your Representatives and Senators indicating
your support of such a bill.
It is truly our responsibility and privilege as Sisters
in the DUVCW to attend our local Memorial Day
services which honor those who gave their “last full
measure of devotion” on behalf of our Country. This
year Memorial Day will be celebrated on May 30th.
Please attend services, and, if possible, present
wreaths on behalf of your tent/department.
Finally, as National Chaplain I look forward to
serving all my Sisters in any way that I can. I am
here for you any time. If you know of someone who
is ill or needs support that I can offer, please contact
me, and I will reach out to them. Please keep the
Nation, our men and women in the armed services
and all those who are in need of God’s love, which I
believe is everyone, in your prayers. I pray that you
have a blessed year ahead.
In Fraternity, Charity & Loyalty,
Sarah W. Meyer, National Chaplain
National Press Correspondent

appointing me as her Press Correspondent. I would
urge all Department, Tent, and Detached Tents to
forward their event and news information to me as
soon as it becomes available.
Tent Press Correspondents should mail two copies of
all news articles, photographs, etc. to your
Department Press Correspondent. One copy is saved
for the Department scrapbook, and the other copy
sent to me for the National President’s scrapbook.
All news clippings must include the name of the
newspaper, names of the persons in the article, and
the date published. Photographs must include the
names of the persons in the photos, the date taken,
and location of the event.
If the National President is unable to attend your
Department Convention, please send program book,
ribbons, etc. to me.
Detached Tent Press Correspondents, please send
your articles and photographs directly to me for
inclusion in the National President’s scrapbook.
Together we can make many memories for our
National President, Sally Redinger, as she enjoys the
album of all of the special events which have taken
place during her term of office.

National Senior Vice President
Ladies, I have been busy lately contacting officers
for my convention in 2017. This may seem like it is
too early, but I have to have this done by July and
since I work in a tax office, it’s definitely not too
soon! In fact, I’m feeling the pinch of time already
to get this task done. I really appreciate the ladies
that have already agreed to be my officers, with your
help and support we will have an excellent
convention. I am depending on those ladies that have
the knowledge and experience of years of DUVCW
membership and I am bringing along some new
members so they can experience the fellowship of
our National conventions.
I would like to remind the Department and Detached
Tent Senior Vice Presidents to be documenting the
number of community volunteer hours of their
members and how they have worked to attract new
members during the past year. You will find the
form to submit this information to me on the
DUVCW website in the Members Only section.
Please have these forms to me no later than June 20th,
so I can get all your information included into my
National report.

Dr. Benjamin Stephenson Plaza
During the National Executive Board meeting in
August 2015, approval was given for the purchase of
a bench at the Dr. Benjamin Stephenson Plaza at
Rose Hill Cemetery, Petersburg, IL. In 1866
Stephenson founded the Grand Army of the Republic
and he was the first Commander-in-Chief. This
summer at our National Convention we will be
commemorating Stephenson and the GAR. It is
hoped that our bench will be in place by then. The
total cost of the bench is $2500.00. Only 5 benches
are available and it is understood that all Allied
Orders will be purchasing a bench to honor
Stephenson. At this time we are asking for donations
from individuals, Tents, and or Departments to help
offset the cost of the bench. Please send your
donations to National Treasurer, Susan Nitzel, with
you check noted for Stephenson Bench. Thank you.
Chief-of-Staff
The National Chief of staff is responsible for raising
monies for the National Department. Our success
depends on the generosity of our members. We will
be having a sale table at convention so please bring
gently used or new items to donate for the sale table.
In addition, we are offering the below items for sale.
Each item is silver tone with our blue logo on white
background printed on each. Please complete the
below order form for your purchase.

2016 National Convention
The Department of Illinois is hard at work planning
a memorable convention. The Grand Opening will be
held on Thursday, July 22, 2016 at 7:00 PM. Please
see additional information in this General Orders
issue for details on meals and hotel accommodations
and the registration form.
New Policy of Mailing of General Orders
The cost of printing the General Orders and the
postage needed for mailing is huge. For the 3 issues
annually, thousands of printed and mailed GO copies
result in an expense that is in the tens of thousands of
dollars annually.
After studying the pros and cons of online access
versus delivery by mail, the DUVCW Executive
Board has drawn the following conclusions:
Today, most people have access to the
Internet. Very few people lack access to the
Internet.
Thus, the vast majority of DUVCW members
have access to the Internet.
So in view of the tremendous costs associated
with mailing the GO, the Executive Board has
formulated the following policy:
The preferred method for getting the GO
will be via the National Website.
Current members with Internet access
should be encouraged to access the GO via
the National Website.
As of January 1, 2016, all NEW members will
access the GO via the National Website. For new
members with no Internet access, the special
form "REQUEST FOR NATIONAL
GENERAL ORDERS MAGAZINE via
USPS" will be added to the New Application for
Membership Form packet; when they fill out this
form, they are specifically requesting that the GO
be delivered by USPS mail. Mailing the GO to
the member is an exception to this new policy so
as to accommodate for the special circumstances
of the new member.
Existing members are also encouraged to
access the GO via the National website. See
order form in this issue for details.
The implementation of the above policy and current
members accessing the GO from the National
website will result in the saving of thousands of
dollars over time.
Thank you for your support.

THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER
The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 perpetuates the memories of their fathers
and grandfathers who served in the Civil War. During this period of the sesquicentennial, we reflect upon
their sacrifices to preserve the Union. These patriotic soldiers are honored and remembered by their
descendants for their willingness to defend their Country and Flag.
There is a group of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country and are not remembered by
this Order. These “forgotten soldiers” died on the field of battle, died from wounds or disease or were
captured and died in prison. Their deaths cost them the opportunity for a family and descendants to honor
and remember their valorous deeds.
It is time for us to honor and remember the sacrifices of these soldiers. Perhaps you have an uncle or a
cousin or know of a forgotten civil war soldier from your community whose memories should be kept
alive. The National Educational Activities Committee is announcing a project to remember these forgotten
men. The Committee will be collecting the names of the soldiers including documentation of their service
beginning in 2013 through 2015. The information submitted will be compiled and available to the
membership in 2016, which is the anniversary of the founding of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Please complete the form below and send it with documentation of the soldier’s service to:

NATIONAL PRESIDENT'S PROJECT
As National President, I am pleased to present this special pin to raise funds for the scholarship
program at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Gallaudet is a federally-chartered private
university for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Abraham Lincoln signed the bill in 1864 that made
this school, for the deaf, a college. The Daughters have had this scholarship fund for more than
25 years. We are the only outside group that gives scholarships to these students.
The pin is a one-inch cloisonné disc. In the center, is a hand forming the universal sign, in sign
language, for "I Love You". The shield in the center carries the large letter "G" for Gallaudet. The
rim sports our name and the red, white and blue colors are for our National flag. It has a butterfly
clasp on the back.
This pin is available for $15.00 including shipping and handling.

NEW YORK ALLIED ORDERS
HONORS TWO SISTERS WHO ARE VETERANS
On Saturday during the 2015 Gettysburg Remembrance
Days, the New York Allied Orders held their Annual
Wreath Laying at the New York Monument in the
National Cemetery. This event became very special
when National Jr. Vice President Caren Cleaveland’s
two veteran sisters, Carol Cole and Joanne Leyland-
Huff, were surprised when they were given
recognition for their service in the U.S. Army. The Mary
Gahan Tent 109 of Waterloo purchased the Veteran
Badges without Carol or Joanne's knowledge. National
President Sally Redinger attended the wreath laying to
share a few words and present the badges to the sisters. They continue to serve by working with Veterans
organizations and appreciated their special recognition. Both Carol and Joanne emotionally shared their
patriotism and thanks. (Article submitted by Eileen Sleckman)

Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865, participated in the “Funeral for

funeral until today as they were buried in mass graves, side by side.
The service included a ceremonial casket on a horse-drawn caisson, military
honors led by the Georgia National Guard, musical selections, and a Wreath
Presentation Ceremony. There were 16,000 stars within the casket representing
the Andersonville Union dead and Confederate dead from Union prison camps.

the University of Akron, Poet Laureate of Georgia, Judson Mitcham, and
Sergeant Major of the Army, Daniel A. Dailey, the keynote speaker.

HONOR VOLUNTEERS OF VETERAN SERVICES OFFICE
As an outreach program each September the
sisters of Belle Reynolds Detached Tent 4,
Tennessee prepare and serve a luncheon to
honor the volunteers of Veteran Services
Office, Lawerence County, TN.
These volunteers drive the Veterans to the
VA Hospital for medical appointments. The
eleven volunteer drivers log four to five
trips per week, and sometimes even more.
The closest VA hospital is two hours away
in Nashville, TN. That means these
volunteers are on the road by 6:00 a.m. and back by
6:00 p.m. or later. That makes for a very long day for
both the volunteer and the Veterans. The volunteers who drive are Veterans themselves, still serving their
country by making sure their fellow Veterans get to their needed medical appointments. It is our pleasure to
honor these men and women Veteran Volunteers. Thanks to all those who serve. (Article submitted by Linda Fitts)

KADY BROWNELL TENT 36, NEW YORK
DONATES TO CARILLON
On December 13, 2015, New York Kady Brownell Tent 36, made an inaugural donation of $100 towards the
repair of the electronic carillon at Long Island National
Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY. Originally dedicated on
May 27, 1962 and purchased with funds raised by local
Veteran's groups, the carillon has not worked for the
past 7-8 years and has been greatly missed. Although
it has not been definitely decided whether to replace the
carillon with a digital one or repair it using specially-
made parts, it was felt to be important to draw attention
to it and begin raising funds. The carillon is attached to
an organ, which can be manually played, delivering live
music, or programed to play music automatically, often
using a timer. The sound, which simulates chimes, is
projected via a speaker tower on the cemetery grounds.
In 1949 Arlington National Cemetery was the first
national cemetery to have a carillon installed. It was
dedicated by President Harry S. Truman with his words "as these bells ring...honored dead rest...freedom
lives..." Conceived as a "Living Memorial," the carillon delivers the beautiful sound of bells as a tribute to
both sacrifice and service. Carillons continue to be installed at Veterans facilities across the nation. (Article

ANNIE ETHERIDGE TENT 59, MICHIGAN
WORKING TO PRESERVE MICHIGAN’S CIVIL WAR FLAGS
On November 14, 2015 members of Annie Etheridge Tent 59, gathered in the Michigan State Capitol Rotunda
to honor an 8th MI Cavalry trooper, Josiah Wolcott. They also presented their Tent donation to the Save the
Flags Program. As part of his message regarding the meaningful and honorable work of preserving Michigan’s
Civil War Flags and his appreciation, Matt VanAcker, Director of the Michigan State Tour Guides, presented
Tent 59 Sister Nancy (Roberts) Soper of Bath, MI with a congratulatory plaque and a framed photo of the 8th
Michigan Cavalry flag. Josiah Wolcott is the Civil War ancestor of Sister Nancy and Tent 59 Sister Laura
(Roberts) Coffman, of Novato, CA. Tent 59 President Sharon Patton presented the check to Mr. VanAcker.
Nancy and her husband Jack Soper, a knowledgeable
genealogist and always an honored guest at Tent 59
meetings, accompanied Mr. VanAcker, additional Tent 59
Sisters, and other attendees to the Michigan Historical
Museum special atmospherics room where the flags are
preserved. Mr. VanAcker removed the preserved 8th
Michigan Cavalry flag from its shelf. The flag material is
of silk, the stars are constructed of very fine symmetrically
sewn silk threads. Mr. VanAcker speculated the flag could
have been manufactured by Tiffany & Company of New
York as the company was engaged in the manufacture of
Civil War flags during the Great Conflict. (Article submitted by

PIONEER DAY - OCTOBER 4
What we thought was going to be a wet and dreary day, turned out to be gorgeous. The canopy, table, signage

moms. Helium-filled red, blue, yellow, pink, green, and white
balloons imprinted with the DUVCW insignia were available
for young and old alike. The children could also select an

95TH ANNUAL FLAG SERVICE
On November 8, 2015 members of New York Kady Brownell Tent 36 participated in the 95th Annual Flag
Service for the Patriotic and Historical Societies at St. Thomas Church in New York City. The service, which
is conducted on the Sunday closest to Veterans Day, begins with a Choral Evensong in honor of those who have
served in the Armed Forces of our country. Twenty-five year member Zoe Stolbun and NY Department
President Eileen Sleckman marched in the procession with the Tent banner. They continued the tradition that
Sisters from Kady Brownell Tent 36 have been involved for over 50 years.
Founded in 1823, Saint Thomas Parish had four
buildings in two locations since that date. The
current structure is a designated New York Landmark
with beautiful French High Gothic architecture
featuring an elaborate altarpiece, fine stained glass
windows and a prominent high tower. It is home to a
Men and Boys Choir which performs music in the
Anglican tradition and is the site for the only church-
affiliated residential choir school in the United States. (Article submitted by Eileen Sleckman)

MARY CHESEBRO LEE DETACHED TENT 23
DELAVAN, WISCONSIN
In the observance of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War the Mary Chesebro Lee Detached Tent 23 became
a proud partner with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration. As a grateful nation, we
need to honor and thank our Vietnam Veterans and their families. The objectives of this organization include
“highlighting the service of the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and the contributions of Federal
agencies,” “paying tribute to the contributions made on the home front by people of the USA,” “highlighting
the advances of technology, science and medicine related to military research,” “recognizing the contributions
and sacrifices made by the allies of the United States” and “ thanking and honoring veterans of the Vietnam
War and the families of veterans.”
Celebrating Veterans Day in November gave us a chance to thank those brave men and women who defended
our nation with extraordinary courage. Their brave service is appreciated, often more than they know. Tent 23
honored these veterans by planning and attending the Walworth County Historical Society/American Legion
Veterans Day Program with Major General Grant Mulder as the guest speaker. In addition, the Tent placed an
ad in the local newspapers thanking all veterans for their remarkable service. Individual veterans known by the
Tent were also mailed Thank You cards.
In keeping with our fall focus on our veterans and
current military, the elves of Tent 23 signed 300
greeting cards that were sent overseas and to the Red
Cross Holiday for Heroes program. We also put
together packages of holiday sweets to send to active
servicemen and to our local program for homeless
veterans. (Article submitted by Pat Blackmer)

VISIT TO THE VETS PLACE, YAPHANK, NY
On December 4, 2015, members of Kady Brownell Tent 36 visited the Vets Place in Yaphank, NY providing

one time a motel, it has been refurbished to
accommodate up to 24 men. It serves as a safe
