Return to home page George Abbot Bulletin …the weekly round-up and preview for GAS parents and carers 26 April 2019 Welcome back to the summer term at George Abbot School. We have been delighted to hear of the sporting success of our Easter holiday trip to Valkenburg. Our rugby players and netballers conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and showed considerable prowess on the pitch and court. More can be read in the PE update that follows. The spring term was brought to a conclusion with our fantastic Spring Showcase organised by the Music Department. 145 students were involved in performances of music ranging in genre from Handel to Coldplay and in ensembles ranging in size from 4 to 70. Thank you to all of them for their hard work and commitment. The Music Department staff continued in the spotlight this week by organising our first appearance in the Guildford Cathedral Coffee Concert series. 11 solo musicians performed to an enormously appreciative audience of Guildford residents, including many of our George Abbot parents. Thank you to all who came to support our students. The acoustic in the cathedral is quite sensational and the performers filled the majestic space with their musical presence and skill. Well done to them all – a memorable event in their school journey. Thursday also saw 92 students participating in the Rock Challenge Regional Finals at Portsmouth. Thank you to all of them for their superb performance and outstanding representation of our school. The sheer number of talented dancers at George Abbot continues to delight us. This weekend, Mrs Clifford, our effervescent leader of the arts at George Abbot, is running the London Marathon to raise funds for our Renaissance Project. As you are aware, we are revitalising our T-Block to provide a more inspirational space for our visual arts life at school. Mrs Clifford is already a George Abbot legend! If you are able, do sponsor her via the link below: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/thecliffordmarathon. Also, this weekend, our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition takes place and we send very best wishes for fine weather, resilience and perseverance to all those involved. Maps at the ready! As a school we strive for continual improvement and value the feedback of every single one of our students. With this in mind, all 2,000 students have been set an assignment via SMHW to answer some questions to see how we are doing as a school. Could you please encourage them to have a go and answer these questions as honestly as possible. We will publish the results before May half term and they will inform our next school development plan. Exam season is now almost upon us. Our Year 12s begin their mock exams next week and our A Level and GCSE exam calendar begins on the 13 May. A reminder to our Year 11 parents that there is an exam briefing for parents on Monday evening at 6pm. We have prepared what we hope is a balanced programme of revision activities and exam prep for our Year 11 and Year 13 students. Our Year 11s have been spoken to about the organisation of these sessions in assembly today; bookings will be made via the usual parents’ evening system and study venues will be available at school in both The Gallery and Elmslie Dining Hall. To close, could I urge you to have a think about our Wild Card Auction – who do you know that might be able to contribute a masterpiece to our auction? Do read on for more… Mrs Kate Carriett Headteacher

On Wednesday 10 July 2019 we will be holding an auction of original postcard-sized artworks at school (along with live music from our students and a glass of fizz). All funds raised through our Wild Card Auction will support our ‘Renaissance Project’ which aims to raise £250,000 to upgrade the arts facilities at George Abbot School and help support the next generation of artists and makers. We are looking for a range of work from local, national and international artists, illustrators, designers or celebrities with a mix of the new, the emerging and the established. If you have any connections who would consider supporting us by donating a postcard-sized piece of original work (whether a piece of art/a poem or inspirational message) then please could you put them in touch with our School Development Office ([email protected] or 01483 888000). We are looking for:

• A signed postcard-sized piece of artwork to be submitted as soon as it has been completed (and no later than the end of May) to Jane Friend (Wild Card Auction), George Abbot School, Woodruff Avenue, Guildford, GU1 1XX. Please contact us if special delivery arrangements need to be made.

• A short statement of around 100-150 words about the contributor and their work along with a photograph to: [email protected]

Subject: Tennis Racket plea from the PE Department

The PE Department would be extremely grateful to receive any used or unwanted tennis rackets that are in reasonable condition to help boost our current stock. Please contact Mrs Lawrence: [email protected]

Thank you in anticipation. Subject: Japanese Evening – Friday 10 May 7.30pm On behalf of the Rikkyo School please see the poster below. Focus on: Teaching and Learning Shining the spotlight on a different area of the school each week… Congratulations - Castastrophe on campus 2018 - 19

Last term, Year 10 students from George Abbot School graduated at the University of Surrey after completing a 25-week programme, Catastrophe on Campus 2018 – 19, which took place on Saturdays at the University of Surrey.

Over the course of the study, students were taking on the roles of experts in forensics, media, biomedical science and disaster management to assist in the response and recovery of biological hazard in a suspicious incident.

Students had an opportunity to explore new subjects, careers and skills, such as decision making, leadership and independent thinking. They were creating and managing a team research project and were learning key debating skills in order to present an argument.

All the hard work and effort payed off, where proud parents were invited to the graduation ceremony. Congratulations and well done to all.

Sports Round Up Sharing the sporting success of our students

As the summer term begins we remain hopeful for some glorious weather so that our summer sports season can be enjoyed by all. However, I would like to reflect briefly on our fantastic Sports Tour which has taken place during the Easter break. The PE Department had the pleasure of taking 45 students to Holland for Rugby and Netball 'Master Class' training with fixtures and tournaments against other schools throughout our stay. All our teams trained so hard and performed brilliantly in their fixtures with our U13 and U15 boys Rugby winning all their matches and our U14 and U15 girls placing 3rd and 2nd in the Netball tournament (bringing back some great silverware for PE!). This was an excellent achievement for all involved but what I was most impressed with was the camaraderie between all the students and the way they supported each other. The sportsmanship on display was exemplary and the trip was a real success. Thank you to all our amazing students who went on the trip, you were an absolute pleasure.

In other news, another success story to highlight is that of Chloe in Year 9 who was selected for the Surrey Girls' U15 team (despite being U14 herself) to compete in the National Sportshall Athletics finals at the Etihad sports complex in Manchester last Sunday, having already been part of the Surrey team that won the South East Regionals to secure their place at the Nationals. Chloe competed in the shot put, vertical jump and the 4x2 lap relay as anchor leg which contributed to the team winning the national finals. Congratulations to Chloe who is now National Sportshall U15 Champion!

Notices

Please see attached the Summer Extra Curricular Timetable for this term with a range of clubs and activities available for students to engage in. Please also remind students to check the sport section of the school website for all fixtures, team sheets and results.

Our ever-popular Quiz night is returning on Friday May 10 in Raynham Hall. Get revising! Nick and Penny Arney have very kindly agreed to be our quizmasters for the evening.

There will be a cash bar with a fine selection of ales and of course the very friendly Rajdoot will be serving up a delicious curry. Please bring your own starters and desserts.

If you have not attended one of our quiz nights then why not give it a try - it is a great evening, lots of fun and only a little bit of competition.

Tables can fit up to 10 in a team. Once you have a team gathered, please email [email protected] to book, giving the surname of the table captain and the number in your team. We will then send you confirmation and bank details to pay, alternatively you can by cash or cheque handed in to the Elmslie reception.

If you don’t have a team but want to join in, we can add you to a team or create a new one. It is a bargain £15 per person which includes guaranteed fun and a delicious curry from our friends The Rajdoot.

There are still a few tables left – come along and join in the fun and raise some money for school’s visual arts department!
