George Abbot School has a thriving Performing Arts faculty with clubs catering for all students of all abilities. Research has repeatedly demonstrated strong links between overall academic success and involvement with the Arts.

This is a fully choreographed show choir, specialising in popular music, in particular Musical Theatre. Only Louder went on tour to New York in 2018, and closed the 2019 Schools’ concert at G Live.

The George Abbot MusicalThe 2019 show will be Beauty and the Beast, with four performances from the 3rd to the 6th December.
THE AUDITION SCHEDULE IS:

Previous shows have included Bugsy Malone, Les Miserables and We Will Rock You, to name a few. If you love acting, singing and dancing this is an amazing opportunity to learn new skills, and meet other students from all different year groups who also love musical theatre.
We will also be recruiting for backstage roles, which include lighting, sound, stage crew, costume, make-up and front of house.
Any student can audition for a role within a whole school musical, just look out for the audition posters around school and on Twitter! This really is a highlight of the school year and is a wonderful experience for all involved.

Year 7 Drama ClubYear 7 Drama Club takes place every Friday lunch time, it is run by our Year 12 Drama students, and is overseen by Mrs Melville. In Year 7 Drama Club students do script work, as well as playing drama games, improvising and devising. It’s a great way to make new friends!
Year 8 Drama ClubThis is a lunch time Drama Club that runs on Mondays. It will be run by Yr 10 and Yr 11 Drama leaders, supported by Mrs Hunt. Students in this club will create short sketches, look at comedy and learn how to build up dramatic tension in their scenes. This
club will also have lots of fun Drama games. It will be fully inclusive for all students.
Year 9 & 10 Drama ClubMiss Lamb runs the Year 9 and 10 Thursday lunch time Drama Club. This consists of devising activities, Drama games and scripted work. The Year 9 and 10 Drama group perform at least one show case a year in which they present their work to friends and teachers.

Drama
In summer 2020 the Drama Department will be directing and creating a play.
In previous years we have performed the following summer plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (outdoor performance at GA), Our Day Out (Elmslie Studio Performance), The Diary of Anne Frank (The Leatherhead Theatre) and The Olympic Values (Ivy Arts Theatre, Surrey University).
The summer play will be announced after Easter, so look out for posters! Auditions will also be announced in assemblies too.

The lunchtime dance clubs on offer at George Abbot allow students of all abilities to participate in a fun, active club learning choreography to popular songs in a range of different dance styles. Students have performed in Winter and Summer productions, showcasing dances from upbeat musicals, contemporary pieces, lyrical dances, and hip hop style performances. The clubs are a great way to meet new people, and dance with groups of friends who might not share the same lessons as you.

We are often asked by external groups to perform in a variety of festivals/ community performances/ Primary School exhibitions, therefore the Dance Department will be forming a Junior and Senior Dance Company to develop work to be performed at these external events. These exciting new companies will broaden students’ performance opportunities, working on fun projects to showcase.

In 2018 the students from Boxgrove School joined a group of Yr10 stu-dents who successfully auditioned to become Dance Leaders for the year. As part of the company, Dance Leaders completed the SLQ Dance Leaders Level 1 award, teaching the company of primary pupils in a range of styles including Street dance, Contemporary Dance, and Musical Theatre Jazz.

By audition only, successful students from Yr7-13 come together as part of our largest Dance Company to learn choreography for the Rock Challenge Dance Competition held at GLive. In 2018, the George Abbot Company won the Surrey Heat and travelled to Portsmouth to compete in the Southern Finals. The competition takes place all over the UK with teams competing biannually for a place in the European finals.

For the past four years, George Abbot have partnered with Italia Conti Arts Centre to deliver the successful Level 3 BTEC Performing Arts course. The students from the Arts Centre come to the school to work with George Abbot pupils on collaborative units. Over lunchtimes and afterschool, the students will showcase new perfor-mance material and always need an audience – watch this space for the next showcase performance!
