Location Recce Deal Pier Beach St CT14 I will be needing to film this location for one of the scenes in my film. I want to get an establishing shot of the pier from the side and so I need to make sure I film that when the tide is fully out so I can get further down the beach. I originally looked at other piers in the area in Ramsgate, Herne bay and Broadstairs, however the sort of pier I was looking for was a more classic style long wooden pier and the only one in the area that fit that sort of description was in deal. I’ve chosen to film on the pier mid-afternoon on Thursday 19 th May, as this is before half term and a working day so there are likely to be less people on the pier. It is also after prime fishing time according to http://www.tides4fishing.com/uk/england/deal , therefore there are going to be less fisherman on the pier around meaning it will be less busy. According to this graph high tide is just before midday and so the tide will be coming out when I want to film. This is optimum time for me to get my establishing shots at the location. As the tide will be going out, the sound from the sea will be quieter, as it is further away from the recording equipment, however the wind on beaches are notoriously strong and loud and so I’ve chosen the 19 th , as it

According to this graph high tide is just before midday and so the tide will be coming out when I want to film. This is optimum time for me to get my establishing shots at the location. As the tide will be going out, the sound from the sea will be quieter, as it is further away from the recording equipment, however the wind on beaches are notoriously strong and loud and so I’ve chosen the 19th, as it has the lowest wind speed of an average of 15mph and between 6-11mph when I want to film.

I’ll also make sure to also bring appropriate wind protection for my mics to drown out the wind noise, however if this isn’t particularly effective on the day I will need to dub the speech over in post-production. The location will not have a power supply that I will have access to and so I will need to make sure I fully charge all the batteries of my equipment and make sure I bring spares just in case any run out. Potential risks for this location are:

1) Equipment getting water damage from the sea2) Slippery surface of the pier causing crew members to slip3) Crew and actors falling off of the pier into the sea

How to prevent these risks:1) Keep any electrical equipment in carry bags when not in use2) Make sure to only use sections of the pier that aren’t wet or slippery3) Keep crew and cast members away from the edges of the pier when filming

This location will be the home of the main character in my film. The house is owned by a friend of mine so I am not having to pay to rent a house or use my own. I planned this scene to be shot just before the evening, and so that timing conflicts with the filming on the 19th and therefore I will film at this location on the 18th when the weather is sunny and I’m available at the right time frame. The location is in a very small village and so there are unlikely to be any loud noises. The property is relatively close to a road, but the traffic isn’t within hearing distance so it’s doubtful that will have any effect on sound quality. Power is available at the property so I will be able to charge any cameras, audio recorders and lights without having to bring extra batteries.Potential risks for this location are:

people around will not be a problem. The road is quite covered on the other side of the picture by large trees covered in vines. This means that I will need to bring additional lighting, as it can get quite dark if it isn’t full sunlight. From prior knowledge I know that this road is virtually empty on weekends due to the school being closed and so there will be minimal traffic and public disruption making this a good place to film. There isn’t a power supply at this location, so I will need to make sure that I charge all of the batteries in the Camera and audio recorders before we get to the location and to bring spare batteries in case any run out.
