Location, Location, Location!
UNIT 1, LESSON 2
Smart Start
Sketch a map of the world. Name the continents and make sure you have a compass rose!
Today’s Objectives
SWBAT identify the Equator, Prime Meridian, and the four hemispheres on a map.
SWBAT describe the location of a place using relative and absolute location.
Keep this in mind: be a THINKER today! What we are going to talk about today can be really confusing, and it can be hard to remember all year long. Let’s make sure that we are brainstorming ways for us to remember how this works when we’re reviewing later in the year!
Vocabulary: Hemisphere
Half of a sphere; half of the Earth
Label the Hemispheres
Label each map to show which hemisphere it is.
Vocabulary: Latitude Lines
Imaginary lines that run east and west across the Earth
Vocabulary: Longitude Lines
Imaginary lines that run north and south around the Earth
Clear up the confusion
Lines of LATITUDE run from EAST to WEST, BUT they are named NORTH and SOUTH because they are NORTH AND SOUTH of the EQUATOR.
Clear up the confusion
Lines of LONGITUDE run from NORTH to SOUTH, but they are named EAST and WEST because they are EAST AND WEST of the PRIME MERIDIAN.
Vocabulary: Equator
An imaginary line around the Earth that splits it into two equal parts (north and south).
Vocabulary: Prime Meridian
An imaginary line around the Earth that splits it into two equal parts (east and west).
Draw!
Draw and label the Equator and the Prime Meridian on the map.
Guess the continent!
1. Pick a continent – KEEP IT A SECRET!
2. Write down the continent in the blank.
3. Write FOUR clues to help find the continent Example: It is located in the northern hemisphere.
Guess the continent!
Find a partner.
Tell them one clue at a time.
Your partner will guess the continent.
Switch!
Independent Work
Label the following on your map: Northern Hemisphere
Southern Hemisphere
Eastern Hemisphere
Western Hemisphere
Equator
Prime Meridian

2 longitude lines

CHECK YOU OUT!
SWBAT identify the Equator, Prime Meridian, and the four hemispheres on a map.
Vocabulary: Absolute Location
Absolute location tells us EXACTLY where something is located using latitude and longitude
Which color is the line of latitude?Which color is the line of longitude?Where are we located?
Vocabulary: Relative Location
Relative location describes where something is located in relation to other things. My house is located 2 miles from the
mall. (distance)
Our school is located one block over from Rock n Roll Tacos. (landmarks)
Dallas is 3.5 hours from Austin. (time)
Texas is south of Oklahoma. (direction)
Describe the relative location of Texas using direction.
Hmmm…Big Thoughts
What is the difference between absolute and relative location?
BAAAAAAAATLE SHIIIIIIIIIP!!!
1. Fold your game board in half, hamburger-style.
2. The top half is your opponent’s board, the bottom half is your board.
3. On your board, you need to place FOUR ships. One ship should cover THREE blocks
Two ships should cover FOUR blocks
One ship should cover FIVE blocks
Your ships should be the blocks right next to each other, no diagonals!
4. Take turns guessing the location of your opponent’s ships by using the coordinates on the board. If they get a spot right, say HIT
If they get a spot wrong, say MISS
5. First person to sink all of the ships wins!
Independent Work
Use absolute and relative location to answer the questions about the map.
