August was a whirlwind of activity, and did time ever fly by when I was havin’ fun! I often refrain from putting pictures of myself or my family in Georgian Life, but this month it was frankly impossible to leave out a picture of my daughter, Autumn, at the Thornbury Hoedown. See if you can spot her, she’s one cute cowgirl!

September brings many changes: kids are back to school, summer vacations are officially over, and we have the fall harvest veggies to look forward to. The Autumn days are warm and bursting with colour and the nights are crisp and clear. It’s the perfect time to sip some unique and delicious wine (or cider) and go for tours in the orchards. The weather is comfortable and the fall foliage is spectacular. Oh, and football season is upon us. Sunday’s will be a lot less quiet in my household!

Fall fairs, pumpkin, apple and other types of food festivals as well as other special festivals, all take place in September and October. Check them out on page 12, there is something for everyone! If there is something great going on in your neck of the woods for October, tell us about it by submitting it to the online calendar (www.georgianlife.ca).

There are great things going on every day this month, so see you out there! Selena

Thoughts from my notebook

Collingwood’s New Fire DepartmentWhen the Police/Fire complex was originally built in 1981, it was designed for under 30 people. Over the years the Police force and Fire department both grew in order to meet the demands of the community.

The building just couldn’t keep up with the accommodation aspect of both services. It was at the point where it also required some updates. The reality was that we were destroying the building slowly by over-use and capacity. When the costing was concluded it was estimated that a new Police facility would be almost double the cost of what a new Fire station would be. The decision was made to move Fire and renovate the existing building for Police.

On July 17th, 2012 we broke ground for the new Fire station at 45 High Street. We had spent the last 18 months researching countless amounts of information including looking at and speaking with many people at other stations. The budget was originally set at 5.1 million dollars but the final price came in at 4.8 million, well under the estimated price. I was convinced that we needed to build something that would be the gateway into that locale and could set a bench mark for the park and surrounding area. We also designed a lot of the interior spaces for staff and made sure there were large rooms with lots of natural light. It was also important that the building was constructed of materials that were natural to the area.

Leaving your pet in a hot car could be a fatal decisionIf you want to know what it feels like to be locked in a hot car on a boiling summer day, take a cue from Halifax Metro reporter Ruth Davenport. Ruth locked herself in her car for 40 minutes on a summer day where the temperature reached 37°C including humidity. Even with the windows cracked slightly, her car reached 49°C after a mere 10 minutes. How did she describe the experience? A sweltering, suffocating nightmare.

As a human, she had the ability to leave the vehicle. A pet however would be trapped, leading to distress and potentially death. SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada receive hundreds of reports of pets being left in cars every year. Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open. “Leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle is one of the most irresponsible things an owner can do. Leave your pet at home and if you must take them with you, make sure that someone is with them at all times,” said Sonya Reichel, Shelter Manager for the Georgian Triangle Humane Society in Collingwood. “We are urging people to keep everyone safe and cool.”

Dogs have a limited ability to sweat; even a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening. A dog’s normal body temperature is about 39°C and a temperature of 41°C can be withstood for a very short period of time before irreparable brain damage or death can occur.

If you believe that your pet has heat stroke (look for excessive panting and drooling, listlessness or unconsciousness) prompt veterinary medical attention is vital. In the meantime, it is important to wet the fur immediately with lukewarm to cool water, not cold water, bring the pet into the shade and offer drinking water.

If you observe an animal suffering in the heat, immediately contact the Georgian Triangle Humane Society at 705-445-5204 or your local police. Owners who choose to leave pets unattended in vehicles may face charges under the Ontario SPCA Act or the Criminal Code of Canada.

The Georgian Triangle Humane Society, an Affiliate of the Ontario SPCA, is also encouraging pet owners to join the No Hot Pets campaign. Originally created and launched in 2012 by the Ontario SPCA, the goal of the program is to share the important message of not leaving pets in vehicles. For more information on the campaign and to help spread this important message, visit www.nohotpets.ca.

Preserving local history in Wasaga Beach

Wasaga under Siege “A War of 1812 Experience” is an annual living history festival commemorating a War of 1812 battle between Americans, British and First Nations which resulted in an American victory with the sinking of the British schooner Nancy. This historic event eventually led to the modern day creation of Nancy Island Historic Site located in present day Wasaga Beach. This three day heritage festival managed and operated entirely by volunteers’ features authentic War of 1812 tactics, historical battles, marine assault landings, artillery, and much more. A professional public address announcer narrates each battle event as a series of fictional and historical battle scenarios are presented to the public. The Grand Encampment at Nancy Island Historic Site features over 300 re-enactors opening their living history encampments to the public along with 19th century merchants, artisans, demonstrators, entertainers, live period musical entertainment and much more. Wasaga under Siege “A War of 1812 Experience” allows the local community the opportunity to come together and commemorate its rich local history and in turn creates long-lasting sustainable community bonds through the promotion and preservation of local history. The Wooden Bowl

It seems that occasionally we need to be reminded of just how precious time with our elders and loved ones should be. We need be reminded to look beyond their frailty, forgetfulness and aging bodies. I have shared this article with many people and I hope you can appreciate the unknown author’s message. As you face transitions with your loved ones, be reminded of the message contained herein. I guarantee that you will remember the tale of “The Wooden Bowl” tomorrow, next week, next month and a year from now.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law and four year old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon and onto the floor. When he grasped his glass, milk spilled onto the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. “We must do something about Grandfather” said the son. “I’ve had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating and food on the floor.”

So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather sat eating alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

When the family glanced in Grandfather’s direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still the only words that the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped his fork or spilled food. The four year old grandson watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” Just as sweetly, the boy responded, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up.” Then the four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words struck the parents so they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no words were spoken, they both knew what must be done.

That evening, the husband took Grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days, he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband, nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled or the tablecloth soiled.

...pass the message along... it is too powerful to ignore. No matter what your relationship with your parents, you will miss them when they are gone. Personal dignity is something valued by everyone.

I Saw Ribs on the Horizon

Well, actually, I ate ribs for Horizon... Home Horizon that is. Apparently many others enjoyed those wonderful ribs too as net proceeds from Home Horizon’s 1st Annual Ribfest were expected to bring in over $7000 of much needed money for this great organization and their wonderful programs and support services. What a yummy way to raise money! Let’s do it again next year! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

GIRLFRIENDS & THE CREW AFTER SCHOOL

There is a shift in the air as the middle of August rolls past and heads towards September – it’s time to go back to school! And for us here at the Environment Network, it’s time to gear back up for our Girlfriends and The Crew Programs.

These two programs are incredibly important to us here, and very near and dear to our hearts.

Girlfriends and The Crew are after school programs for grades 7 & 8. Girlfriends is run by women, for young women; the crew is run by men, for young men. They are hands on and active in nature, with volunteer mentors and guest professionals from the community providing positive leadership and serving as role models for the participants.

It is our hope to help develop the self esteem of young woman and young men, to inspire and to empower them. We want to encourage them to have choice and most importantly to be confident in the choices they make. These programs provide them with a space to be true to who they are, to learn, to laugh and to

understand other points of view. Mostly we expect these young people to walk away standing a little taller and feeling self assured.

The young women and men who participate in these programs have only good things to say about them. We often hear comments like “It’s taught me to believe in my dreams”, “It’s a safe environment and you can say what you want”, “I care more about myself and I don’t take myself for granted” and “(Girlfriends) has changed most of the girls I know into better people.” Comments like these from our participants inspire us to continue delivering this program, and reach out to find more schools where we can share these messages of empowerment.

These programs are not only empowering, but focus on self improvement. During these programs, participants are given the tools needed to help improve their nutrition, physical activity, self-esteem, and relationships. This comes in the form of healthy snacks and nutrition tips, accessible fitness activities, as well as respectful and supportive discussions. Our goal is to not only improve their health in the short term, but throughout their lives.

The Girlfriends and Crew programs are both sponsored by donors in the community – contributions are put towards staffing, healthy snacks, and activities. We are continually seeking more support for this program from businesses and individuals in the community. If community members have an interest in being a part of the program, we are always seeking volunteer mentors for these young women and young men – our mentors report their involvement to be an incredibly rewarding experience!

If you would like more info on these programs, or feel you can be of help in some way, we’d love to hear from you – please contact Stephanie at [email protected] for more information!

BUSINESS PROFILE: Mylar & Loreta’s Restaurant Hometown Home-Cookin’Almost three decades ago, Sandy Hamilton and her children sat anxiously at a Singhampton public auction that featured a storied local hotel she had

set her sights on. She was sure the bidding would be fierce. But when the auctioneer cried out for opening bids, it only took the charm of her 3 year-old son Spencer to win the

building with a rambunctious cry of “Ten Dollars!”. And so began their happy, hometown, home-cookin’, and heartwarming family business, ‘Mylar & Loreta’s Restaurant’.

The site’s story begins more than a century before that, with a tale of pioneering commerce and romantic promise. Built and owned by Cyrus Sing in 1860, it was first a tavern and hotel that was host to the bustling business of land speculators, survey crews, and exploring travellers. A rich heritage of hospitality that is still alive today. Over generations the establishment changed hands from owner to owner, each entrepreneur gracing it with a new title. The most recent and most unique of all has to be ‘Mylar and Loreta’s’. Named for the stars of a local legend that tells the tale of lost love that lingers. An early settler of Singhampton, Mylar made a home here for himself and his soon to arrive lover, Loreta. When her ship was lost at sea, so was the life they had longed to fulfill. Mylar’s love grew ever stronger to the end despite the despair, and it is said the spirit of their romance still roams the restaurant.

Since 1984, Sandy Hamilton’s spirited dedication to delightful dining through hard work and her passion to please has made this former hotel a home. A long career in the food and restaurant industry has given her a menu of experiences and wisdom from which to create a culture of comfy cuisine for countless customers. Her little Spencer, all grown up now, continues to be at Mom’s side and helps run the restaurant with a friendly staff of over twenty dedicated employees. A popular stop for travel tours, literally ‘busloads’ of people have helped themselves to their hearty hometown feasts.

Whether it’s their bountiful Buffets every Sunday, forkfuls of Roasted Pork, or ‘Loreta’s’ dreamy Creamy Cheese Cake, there’s always something cooking that’ll keep people booking their next visit.

Having a gift for people-pleasing, it was only natural that the family would create ‘Mylar’s Gift Shop’ too! With a Grand Opening this Labour Day, the shop will feature Spencer’s woodworking craftsmanship, Sandy’s lovingly restored antique light fixtures, as well as homemade take-home food and hostess gifts. Fans of fresh fruits and veggies can thankfully get their pick of the crop every Friday too at their new Farmer’s Market, right up to Thanksgiving.

Sandy Hamilton and Spencer Ridding warmly welcome you to join their friendly, family feast at ‘Mylar & Loreta’s Restaurant’. Open 7 days a week, and available for private functions and festive parties by reservation. Visit www.mylarandloretas.ca for more info, or call 705-445-1247. Located just south of Collingwood on Grey County Road 124, Singhampton, Ontario.

Wings and wheels gathered at Edenvale

Edenvale Aerodrome hosted their annual fly and drive-in event “Gathering of the Classics.” From antique Rolls Royces and Ford Model “A’s”, to a B-25 Bomber, Harvard and Tiger Moth planes. Most of the planes were on the ground but a few took flight with passengers in them. When people weren’t looking at the over 120 classic planes and cars on site, they were inside Bistro 26 enjoying a delicious lunch. If you haven’t been to the Edenvale Aerodrome or Bistro 26, definitely mark it on your list of to-do’s before the summer is over! With beautiful views, an innovative menu and friendly staff, you can enjoy a relaxing dining experience. And if you’re lucky, catch a plane or two taking off or landing! www.edenflight.com and www.bistro26.ca. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

The end of summer brings the beginning of the hectic period between now and Christmas. The kids go back to school and work ramps up. September is a productive time. You can almost feel it in the

air “do it now”.

I remember when my kids were young how overwhelming the fall could be. Just getting them back into school, settled with their new teacher, outfitted with all the gear they needed, paying for it, enrolling them in fall activities, making lunches again, getting them up in the morning, etc. would be exhausting. Then it would be off to work and it would always seem so busy and the month would pass in a blur.

I used to feel like I wasn’t doing enough. No matter how much I accomplished, I always felt like I could have done more. I was always such a slave driver to myself. Everyone else looked like they had it all figured out and it looked so easy when they did it.

The pastures are always greener elsewhere. As a Coach I hear the stress from many people who appear not to have a care in the world, and I have learned most of us all feel the same stress. The difference is in how we choose to deal with it.

This September let go of the stress as much as possible and take time to embrace the sweet moments. Do your best and set realistic expectations for yourself. Remember those moments you create today will be the treasured memories in your future.

Players fundraising for Italy

The U16 Wasaga Canadian Girls soccer team is busy fundraising for their trip to Italy with tag days at the local Supermarkets as well as a barbecue at Frankie the Barber in Stayner (pictured below). More fundraising events are scheduled in the upcoming months. The team will travel to the Agropoli tournament in April next year. They train every Sunday at Klondike Park, and will move indoors when the colder weather is here. The girls will visit Rome and see all the sights, visit the Isle of Capri and Pompeii, as well as attend the Palm Sunday mass given by the Pope at the Vatican. They will then travel south to Agropoli and play in the tournament. The final stop on the tour will be Calabria to the towns of San Giorgio and Vita Nova. This is where the original boys team came from that played in Wasaga Beach in 2010. We have made many friends there over the past two years and look forward to seeing them once again. The tour of Italy promises to be a wonderful experience for the players, as they will learn about the history and culture of Italy and will likely be a life changing experience for them all. ‘Collingwoodstock’ Two Days of Arts & Music

Civic Holiday weekend saw the grounds at the Museum Station transformed into a mini Woodstock of sorts as two days of art and music had crowds enthralled with an amazing array of visual delights and some pretty cool jazz and pop courtesy of the Jim Kinnear Trio. Artisans’ offerings were judged, and on hand to award recipients were Councillor Ian Chadwick, Janet Allen (Chair-BMFA) and Yvonne Gibson (CAMF Chair). Congratulations to the winners including Lori Dunn (1st Place), Terese Connolly (2nd Place), Kris Nahrgang (3rd Place), Darlene West (4th Place) and Gil Moore (5th Place), and to all who participated. Talking about difficult matters and sharing support are vital for health and healing. Personal and Family Counselling and Mediation cover a vast expanse of topics, most of which people are hesitant to tackle. Yet most typically feel significant relief after they have done so. People are social beings, and we want and need the support of others, however do not know how to approach difficult topics, being afraid of making matters worse by making mistakes. Grief is one of these topics. Grief can be the result of many factors: bereavement at someone’s death, the loss of body functions and abilities, loss of employment, and multiple other reasons. To complicate matters, when someone is grieving him/herself, they do not know what to say and do with the children around them who are also hurting.

This is where the use of professional resources can provide immense assistance. One of these difficult topics is in regard to talking with young people about illness and dying. There are wonderful resources available through professionals. One such resource I champion is called, “Talking with Young People about Illness and Dying” put out through a group of caring professionals at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto. The discussion advocates talking openly, honestly and often to children about the situation.

This resource includes such valuable sections as: • Be honest when answering questions and providing information • Use the words dying, died, and dead • Don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know” • Show them you are there to support them • Ask them to describe what they know about the situation so far

Other aspects when talking to children about grief issues includes the importance of using proper words, such as the names of illnesses, reassurance others are safe and cared about, and the other adults they care about are okay. It is healthy and normal to grieve together, and differently. As Brené Brown advocates in her lectures, one can choose courage or comfort, but not both, and it is through our vulnerability that we experience our strength.

For a copy of the above resource, more information, or to talk about other counselling, mediation or collaboration matters which may be of interest to you, please contact Cathy Cartwright through South Georgian Bay Family Mediation @ www.sgbfm.ca 705-443-1957.

TD donates $25,000 to ET!

TD Canada Trust has donated $25,000 to Elephant Thoughts Education Outreach. The funds will help to complete some much needed teacher training facilities and boardroom space. Brad Miller with Commercial Banking at TD said this isn’t the first time TD has donated to Elephant Thoughts. They support projects that involve education and the environment and ET is all about both. “It’s just a perfect fit”, says Miller. Elephant Thoughts president Lisa Farano says the new building has made a world of difference for the organization. “We needed the extra space to expand the Explore Store and animal collection which they use to help educate the public on endangered species. We also desperately needed more training and storage space but unbelievably are at the rafters again. Next we hope to add more training and programming space”. Elephant Thoughts is committed to educating children here in Canada and around the world despite economic or geographic barriers.

For more info go to elephantthoughts.com or visit them at 10138 Hwy 26 East in Collingwood.

Follow your Dream

The Wasaga Beach Lions Club has been helping dreams come true in Wasaga Beach for over 50 years. Last year, they donated over $70,000 to our youth, health, camps, hospitals, national charities and Superstorm Sandy through the Lions International Foundation. keven ferryConstruction & Renovations

Here are four projects that are perfect for cool fall days:

Winterize the Deck - Once the deck is cleaned off and all summer chairs and tables are stored away, power-wash the deck with a high-velocity pressure washer. Fall is also a good time to reseal the deck if you use a sealant or stain.

Roof Work - Once all the autumn leaves have fallen, cleaning out the roof gutters will save you from building up ice dams that can damage the roof in the winter. If your roof is in bad shape, bring in a professional to assess whether the roof needs to be replaced before winter or can wait until the spring.

Upgrade Doors and Windows - If you have old, single-pane windows, you will lose a signifi cant amount of heat in the wintertime. Replacing old windows with energy-effi cient, double-paned upgrades can pay for itself quickly in heat savings.

Interior Painting - Fall days are perfect for indoor painting. Summer is often too humid for paint to dry properly and that can cause walls to look splotchy. In winter, the lack of ventilation can make paint fumes hang around and can lengthen drying times.

The Mystique of the Tall Ships

Much to the delight of thousands of visitors, the Port of Collingwood was pleased to host three beautiful sailing vessels and their crews as part of the 1812 Tall Ships Tour. The Friends Good Will, Lynx and Madeline (all replicas and flying under the U.S. flag) were a huge hit with the crowds proving that there is still a certain fascination or mystique, if you will, when it comes to the ‘art of sailing’ and the tall ships in particular. Thank you to the wonderful captains and crews who were great ambassadors and hosts entertaining those who toured their ships. We wish you always, wherever you voyage, ‘fair winds and following seas’! Beauti-Tone Uncovers the Undertones to 14 Great NeutralsWhen it comes to paint colour, a great neutral is like a movie’s musical score – you don’t necessarily realize it’s there, but it heightens the experience of whatever it is you are seeing. Home Hardware Stores Limited, through its Beauti-Tone Paint Division, is paying tribute to the power of neutrals with 14 beautiful shades that will make your décor sing.

“A great neutral is your BFF for home décor,” says Bev Bell, Creative Director, Beauti-Tone Paint and Home Products Division, Home Hardware Stores Limited. “They are incredibly versatile, inspiring looks that are luxe and sophisticated, or casual and cozy.”

A neutral colour scheme can paint a harmonious atmosphere in your home and perhaps even make it appear more spacious. “The challenge in choosing the perfect neutral is that they have complex personalities,” notes Bell. Selecting the correct neutral colour family is important. Understanding undertones is the answer to this challenge. If the undertones are in conflict, the colours in the room will appear to clash, even if they are in the same colour group.

Undercover Undertones

Almost all colours, other than those that are pure, have an undertone. Olive green, for instance, is green with a yellow undertone. What makes turquoise a beautiful shade of blue is its green undertone. But, those are easy. Neutrals, on the other hand, like to disguise their undertones. A taupe

can go pink or purple, but you may not notice it until it’s on your walls. A grey can be warm, cool, blue, green, or red influenced. Browns that look similar on the surface can have yellow, red or green undertones. Beige can tend towards yellow, green, pink and occasionally orange undertones.

So, how can you make sure you end up choosing the right shade? Once you have selected the colour family you want, the secret to choosing the perfect neutral shade is to compare it, side-by-side to another neutral in the same colour family. This helps you to see the subtle undertones which you may not have noticed in a single colour swatch. For whites, the best way to bring out a near invisible undertone is to compare the paint chip to the whitest white. Why worry about undertones with whites? Rooms that are ‘white on white’ really work if the whites have similar undertones. You will likely be disappointed, if you combine warm whites that have a hint of a yellow undertone, with cool whites that have a hint of blue, in the same space.

Choosing a Warm or Cool Undertone

“When decorating a room that feels cold and uninviting, you would normally balance it by using colours from the warm side of the spectrum. But what if you love cool colours because they make you feel relaxed? The easy solution is to choose a green with yellow undertones or a blue with red undertones and your cool hues have warming characteristics. On the flip side, cool down hot colours by adding cool undertones. Just don’t try this with orange. That’s the one colour that will always fight back with its warm and outgoing personality,” Bell notes.

Of course, the very best way to know a neutral’s undertone is to have someone figure it out for you! Come into Stayner Home Hardware and let the experts show you the 14 beautiful Beauti-Tone neutrals for your home, including their undertones.

BUSINESS PROFILE: Hands For Hire: Your Property Serviced Properly

Among those neatly trimmed lawns and beautifully presented homes in the Georgian Triangle are a pair of hands that have the skill and strength to keep things just so. Those hands belong to Michael Dillon and the associates of Hands For Hire. Michael is the founder and owner of Hands for Hire; a local company that provides services managing everything from

home improvement, and repair to all season maintenance contracts including snow removal, property care, and even security checks. A “one stop shop” of sorts for the busy home and small business owner.

Michael’s course to Collingwood and the creation of his full-service company began in Burlington many years ago. Being a top producing Real Estate Agent from 1986 to 1999, the experience in presenting properties for maximum market appeal would prove to be a crucial component of the company he would one day build. The housing industry naturally introduced him to many skilled tradespeople and contractors with a passion for perfection. His interest grew into a woodworking business of his own called ‘Tool Time’ in 1996, a workshop that brought together a community of other handy homeowners and tradespeople to share materials, equipment, and most importantly knowledge.

As Michael’s skill and expertise was building, so too was his desire to make a new home in the Georgian Triangle where his visits to local family members kept the community close to his heart for many years. By 2010 the Dillon family had accomplished their dream, became permanent residents of the area and started to grow their dream business, Hands For Hire. Now with a home-base in beautiful Collingwood, the Hands for Hire concept has taken off and continues to gain momentum among families in the community. It currently services clients from Wasaga Beach to Meaford.

Not only is Michael a hands-on skilled tradesman himself, he’s also a Project Manager with an accomplished team of highly skilled and licensed practitioners that remain on call to serve the Hands for Hire network of clients. If Michael or his team are unable to tackle the job at hand, they will arrange for someone who can. Michael personally supervises all work to ensure that it meets his personal standards and those of his clients. The personal touch is the cornerstone to the Hands for Hire service. Keeping the roster of clients and size of projects at a manageable level also allows them to remain responsive, in touch and on time no matter what and when the job is required. A veritable local labour force you won’t have to labour to find.

There are so many positive ways to describe Michael Dillon’s delivery of service, it’s hard to count them on just two hands. A consummate professional, polite, enthusiastic and proud of the hard work he handles is just the start. If you have a “honey-do” list that never seems to get done or cannot keep up with the demands of your home, property or small business... don’t perspire, call Hands for Hire!

The MPA Awards

The Mobile Photography Awards Exhibition at BMFA’s Arts Centre in Collingwood was a display of gallery style photographs taken by mobile phones showing that it has reached fine art proportions. Daniel Berman, curator and digital artist, has brought the medium out of digital galleries and into bricks and mortar ones with The Mobile Photo Awards. It’s no surprise that they’re now making waves in the art world. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Lots of Doggy Fun at the 1st Annual Dogfest and Walk-a-thon

The Georgian Triangle Humane Society held their 1st Annual Dogfest and Walk-a-thon on Sunday August 18th. Approximately 450 people celebrated “All Things Dog” and came to support animals looking for their ‘forever home’. Those participating in the Walk-a-thon took a leisurely stroll along the Georgian Trail with their canine companions. Attendees checking out the Dogfest enjoyed a little shopping and a bite to eat from the 17 participating vendors and food vendors. The Ask The Expert Booth allowed pet owners to talk to knowledgeable staff from Bellbrae Animal Hospital, while the Demo Area provided education and entertainment in the areas of canine behaviour and training, animal chiropractic services, agility courses and training, and a visit from the OPP dogs. Needless to say, local pooches are now counting down to next year’s event! Submitted by: Calla Spencer

Fall in love with SeptemberSeptember marks the start of fall with its cooler nights, changing leaves and back to school buzz. It is also the beginning of the harvest and in our area it is the best month to enjoy local produce. Not only do we still get the sweet berries and crisp veggies of the summer, we start to see the earthy fall produce like apples, cabbages and squash. Broccoli is at its best and the sweet corn is still plentiful. Fields are flourishing and almost everything is in-season! September is the best time to get out and visit your local farm market to experience what growers in our community have to offer.

While we love the September harvest we also look forward to the changes in our garden that the cooler temperatures allow. September is a great month to plant trees and shrubs or move any existing plants. Root growth is at its peak and plants’ roots still have time to settle in their new spaces before the chill of winter sets in. It is the perfect time to reflect on what worked, what didn’t work, what you’d like to try next, and make some changes for the spring.

Did you know September is the best month of the entire year to seed your lawn? This includes both seeding a new lawn and overseeding your existing lawn to make

it thicker and healthier. It’s also a great time to lay sod because cool temperatures combined with occasional rain help sod root quickly.

Mulch is another late September must to protect your plants from the changing weather. With the nip of cool weather in the air and your gardens mulched, it is time to sit back and relax in front of your fireplace. Add stocking up on firewood to your September to do list!

Riveting paintings by Elva Hook

Curiosity House Gallery featured Artist of the Month, Elva Hook. Her dramatic engagement with acrylic paint and canvas evokes the swirling vibrancy of a flamenco dancer’s ruffled skirts, the dazzle of a Chopin Etude and the exuberant flow of a Whitman Poem. Curiosity House Books and Gallery is an independent bookstore located on the main street of Creemore that has an art gallery in the store which shows the works of a different artist every month. Opening receptions are usually held on the first Saturday of each month. www.curiosityhousebooks.com Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

BUSINESS PROFILE: NIGHTGLOW Toilet Seats: King of the ‘Throne’A young bachelor, Tim, arrives home to his basement apartment after an exuberant hockey game and team celebration. It’s the middle of the night and he’s exhausted... but nature calls! Not wanting to rouse himself too much from slumber, the young man avoids turning on the bathroom light. Let’s just say his aim in the dark wasn’t as good as his slap shot during the game. The ensuing mess marked a pivotal moment in potty technology, as the young man remarked to himself, “Ya know, if my toilet seat glowed in the dark, my life would be better.”

The man is Tim Fittler, and since that eureka moment in 2000 he’s made it his business to help people do their ‘business’ with his company Potty Glow Inc. and product, the NightGlow Toilet Seat.

Originally from Kingsville, Ontario (fitting for a maker of ‘thrones’!), Tim has lived in and kept production within the province: from the first fun prototype of his glowing toilet seat made in Tillbury, to the current hardworking Windsor-based model. He keeps the headquarters for the luminescent loo local though, overseeing production and distribution from his seat in Collingwood, while Tim’s trusted partner Dave Reynolds happily handles the U.S. shipping pipeline. Fittler is a strong believer in the importance of local entrepreneurship too, and was flush with excitement to include students of Windsor Ontario’s St. Claire College in the development of improved ‘glow’ materials and market knowledge. Even the potty packaging is Canadian, employing Collingwood artistic professionals.

Sold throughout Canada and the U.S., the seat itself is a flash of brilliance. Available in either round or elongated shapes, they look white while in the light to suit your current fixtures and decor. Their daily exposure to light (sun or bulbs) can charge them for up to 8 hours of glow to create a bathroom beacon in the night. A fun idea at first glance, but the safety benefits will bowl you over. The NightGlow toilet seat has been a welcome relief for institutions such as Nursing Homes, and they are the perfect respite from restroom darkness at homes with grade-school kids to golden-age adults, and even cottages and outhouses. Online orders are already welcome on their website, and availability at major national hardware and department stores is the potty’s next potential purchase point.

Tim Fittler’s night-light toilet seat is ready to go when you are, and welcomes your ‘glowing’ reviews!

NIGHTGLOW Toilet Seats by Potty Glow Inc. are currently available at Home Hardware Building Centre, Highway 26 East, Thornbury, and online at www.NIGHTGLOWSEATS.com. Inquiries and orders can be made to [email protected] or by phone 705-293-1933 and fax 705-888-678-8584.

Community and Culture Meets CommerceMost of you already know, but we are just so proud to show what a rich collection of treasures await those that traipse through the ‘triangle’, Georgian Triangle that is, home to the special shops and services of South Georgian Bay.

Our commercial community is custom made for customers: considerate and kind, accommodating and creative, resourceful and reliable. Products and professionals that are both useful and unique. ‘Georgian Life’ is a culture that celebrates commerce connected with local events and outdoor adventures: just visit any Farmer’s Market to see it in action!

If you’ve ever passed through the Town of Stayner, you should discover it’s worth a stay. Rural retail at it’s best, offering a cozy community for customers with a penchant for peaceful shopping, fresh food choices, and hometown hospitality that you can’t pass up.

There’s so much more in store when you discover Creemore. Boutiques abound around the town, proudly offering premium fashions and giftable finds. Gaze in amazement at the galleries, or graze on gourmet bistro edibles while you sip on local beer that literally ‘springs’ from Creemore’s own brewery. From the summery old-time village feel of the Copper Kettle Festival to the wonder of winter’s Santa Parade, there’s always more in Creemore.

When you’re having fun in the sun you know you’ve reached the beach: Wasaga Beach. But the party goes well past the waterfront and Labour Day, with shops, services and celebrations that extend the excitement of summer into every season. Wash the blues away with a growing rockin’ ‘Wasaga Beach Blues Music Festival’ that’s sure to shake up September. The fun snowballs into a wild winter wonderland with ‘Snowman Mania’, a festive family celebration. Wasaga has grown into a retail resort of sorts, offering all you need under the sun year-round.

At the centre stands Collingwood, an historic harbour town that sits proudly by the bay before the mountains, for a way to enjoy year-round recreation, restaurants, and retailers. A vibrant arts scene and collection of cafés soothes the soul, while boutiques abound for those that like to shop around for the latest unique fashions. Host to the best fests and events, from the excitement of ‘Elvis’ to the wet and wild ‘Wakefest’, it’s a destination for city and countryfolk alike that like to experience it all, from the franchise fare to the farmers’ wares.

Art is at the heart of Thornbury and Clarksburg, where the creative offerings have grown beyond the popular galleries and into the eclectic eateries and boutique establishments that call this bustling ‘burg home. Once you experience their artisanal approach to providing products and professional services, you’ll be charmed into checking out Thornbury/Clarksburg throughout the year.

Shoppers will feel anything but ‘blue’ when they make it to Blue Mountain Village, where premium products and palate-pleasing patios are at their peak. There’s every reason to visit every season, with retailers and restaurants that cater to the winter-warriors of the slopes as well as the chalet-shoppers and weekend wanderers. It’s worth the trek to tour the trails of this mountainside mecca of merchandise and merriment.

Like a beacon on the bay, there is a marina town that can’t be missed. The shop owners and service-people shine with pride, anchored by the majestic Meaford Hall Arts and Cultural Centre that offers a creative core to the community. The Meaford International Film Fest, musical concerts, Apple Orchards, and annual ‘Scarecrow Festival’ is sure to scare up a wave of visitors looking for local wares. You just can’t afford to miss Meaford.

Wherever you wind up, you win. This market is not to be missed, no matter the town you decide to shop around in. So get out there and enjoy life, the ‘Georgian Life’!

Welcome to Ontario’s Apple Country - a special place where the moderating e ects of Georgian Bay and the Niagara

Escarpment create perfect conditions for growing amazing apples - and baking perfect apple pies!

Travelling the quiet country roads of the Blue Mountains, enjoy the sweet aroma of blossoms in the spring; ripening fruit in the summer; brilliant colours in the fall and crisp sheets of white in the winter. No ma er what time you

visit, the Apple Pie Trail is always delicious.
