Preschool openhouse: The MOMSClub of Germantown-East is organizing aMulti Preschool OpenHouse on Saturday, Jan.17, 2015. See page 10.

On the fourth day of the newyear, the Germantown High Schoolgym was filled with people who werelooking back at the years of theirlives that were shaped by Phil Datka.

That evening was the visitationfor Datka, who passed away Dec.30. Datka was the varsity footballcoach at Germantown for 42 yearsand was also a teacher and adminis-trator at that school for most of thattime. He returned to Germantown to

work as an assistant coach for thepast two seasons. The Germantown School

District, along with its present andpast staff, students and parents, willsadly miss our beloved Coach PhilDatka. Phil Datkas impact on thelives of many is far-reaching, the dis-trict said in a statement. As ateacher, a coach, a mentor, and afriend, few individuals have had theinfluence on one community as Philhas had on Germantown. All whohad contact with Coach Datka woulddescribe him as humble, benevolent, and truly a gentle man. Our sympa-thy goes to the Datka family and joinwith them in the gratitude we all holdfor having had Coach Datka as part

    of the Germantown School Districtfamily.

The lights at Datka Stadium, thefootball and track stadium namedafter the longtime coach, were on forthe evening of Jan. 4, showing asnow-covered field. Inside the highschool, the visitation started at 2 p.m.with a line that started in the gymand wrapped around a side andback hallway. There were still peoplein the line at 6 p.m.

While the family was expecting aresponse from the local community, they were surprised at how manypeople came to the visitation.

I do not think anybody, espe-cially our family, anticipated the actu-al response for the wake. The weath-er was bad, it was following the NewYears holiday weekend, and it was aSunday. We knew our closest friends

This year taxpayers will have to tacklethe complexities involved with provisionsof the Affordable Care Act, as well ascomplex changes in depreciation forrental property owners and businesses. Now is the time to consider the services

of an Enrolled Agent (EA).While many CPAs do tax work, most

focus in other areas such as businessaudits and general accounting. EAs allspecialize in taxation. To earn the EAlicense, they must pass a stringent three-

part exam administered by the IRS thatcovers individual taxes, business taxesand representation of clients before theIRS, or have relevant experience as a for-mer IRS employee. EAs, CPAs and taxattorneys all have unlimited rights of rep-resentation in IRS audits, collections, andappeals, but only EAs receive their licens-es from the federal government. They areoften referred to as "Americas taxexperts."

In order to keep up with the cly changing tax code, EAs are rto complete 72 hours of continufessional education in each thr"enrollment cycle." MembersNational Association of Enrolle(NAEA) must go beyond the IRment and complete 90 hours in thtime period.

You will find one of Amerexperts at Gross Tax Service,Germantown. Michelle Gross Emanaging member of the firm, wfounded in Germantown in Michelle is a member of NAEAly serves as secretary of the WSociety of Enrolled Agents, and iber of the Better Business Michelle and her staff are currencoming new clients. He does need to be the only pet in thehousehold, as he loves to be the king and wants all of yourattention. Finn is a real lover boy with his humans and has a way ofcharming everyone he meets! Won't you come meet Finn to see ifhe will be the purr-fect addition to your family.

would come and hopefully former players assuming they were in town but theactual turnout blew us away, said Philsson, Doug Datka, who is a member of thehigh schools Hall of Fame. It was incred-ible.

A telltale sign in the line were theGermantown football jerseys being worn, which reflected the different generationsof players coached by Phil Datka. Therewere jerseys with stripes on the sleevesand names on the back, which were wornseveral years ago. More recent jerseyshad the stripes on the side of the shirts andno names on the back.

Those wearing jerseys included oneplayers who were now grown men alongwith players who Datka had coaches inrecent years.

It was so awesome to be share his lifewith everybody that knew him and had astory to share about their relationship withmy Dad and how he touched their lives. There were at least 10 families at the eventthat had three kids in line that played for

my Dad over the years, Doug Datka saidlater in an email response. It was veryhumbling to say the least. It was an honorto hear all those stories while my Dad layjust behind us in the gym. I am sure heheard every story and was glowing fromhappiness.

The visitation was filled with photos ofPhil Datka for time throughout his 69 years from The Early Years to Just Phil,Grown Up Years to time with family. There were photos from his childhoodyears in Milwaukee to his more recentyears at Germantown. There were pic-tures of Phil Datka with former UW mensbasketball Coach Dick Bennett and formerfootball coach Barry Alvarez along withphotos of Phil with former players, neigh-bors, and many photos of Phil with his wifeMary and their children and grandchil-dren.

By far, the words kind, sincere, and

good man were the most frequently useddescriptions by people in the receptionline, Doug Datka said. After the event, our family recognized the selfless effortmy Dad had invested into affecting peo-ples lives not just in the school or the foot-ball field, but its extension deep into thecommunity. I felt a consistent theme oftreat others as you want to be treated and

to PASS it forward to the next genera-tion."The scoreboard of the gym had the

final scores of Datkas championshipteams in 1998 and 2003. Several rows oftables were filled with team honors, Coachof the Year honors, and an award hereceived after being selected as the dis-trict administrator/board employee of theyear for the 1995-96 school year. Alsopart of the display was Phil Datkas letterjacket from St. Josephs College inIndiana.

Current Germantown High SchoolPrincipal Joel Farren was involved in relay-ing information about the visitation andfuneral to the community and later was atthe visitation. I had only one semester as an admin-istrator under my belt and had heard somuch about this Phil Datka, Farren saidlater. I took the opportunity to sit in whenhe worked with kids and saw his compas-sion (and) empathy while balancing thatwith appropriate discipline. He always lis-tened to students, but was outstanding onexplaining the why instead of simplylevying consequences.

In his role as a coach, Farren workedwith Datka during the good and the badtimes.

    If student-athletes violated the

Activities Code, he was supportive of ourpolicies and procedures. Often I had to bethe bearer of bad news and saw first-hand the disappointment in his eyes when

a student-athlete made an error in judge-ment, Farren said. Phil always saw thebigger picture beyond football or highschool and understood that the goal ofboth was to prepare students and student-athletes for life and to be good citizens. Asa community member, he valued that andhad a heart of gold. His moral compasswas unmatched, as was his sense of

humor. For Doug Datka, the visitation on Jan.4 followed by the funeral and luncheonthe next day left strong images of theimpact his father had on those who werethere to say their goodbyes.

I will always have a vivid image ofpeople at the wake crying and physicallyshaking when they met our family. My fam-ily realized the wake was not just for usbut was also an opportunity for friends tosay their goodbyes to my Dad.

Witnessing their sincere grief because I now know there astruggling to get through this anjust like my family. They are aof our family, Doug Datka image of that relationship wremain a very strong visual in m
