GESU NEWS & VIEWS Highlights of Parish, School and Alumni Happenings Spring 2013 Vol. 5 Issue 2 From the Pastor’s Desk… Today is an exciting time to be a Catholic. We are a community confronted with difficult times, enormous change, and scandals. We are also a community blessed with bountiful gifts, opportunity for renewal, and Sacraments that sustain our life. We sense the Spirit at work in the election of our new Pope Francis I, and the possibility for healing and conversion in our Church. I believe the Spirit is at work in our Church. We experience the development of our local community in our celebrations of the Eucharist, outreach to those in need, and our engagement with the Parish Assessment and Renewal Process. In the past year, volunteer commitment and parishioner leadership has increased and flourished. Our theme for this Year of Faith has been the Magis, to be more for Christ and to witness our faith to the world. A great deal of excitement, energy, and the pursuit of being more in and for Christ has taken place in our parish. We have reached out to thousands who are in need of food, shelter, and clothing. Gonzaga continues its mission of mercy to those who are homebound and alone. The Spiritual Exercises nourish the inner life of our parish and direct us towards setting the world on fire with God’s love. Our leadership has given us an opportunity to create new and life-giving programs and activities. We bring the Magis into everything we do, especially in our celebration of the Sacraments and the hospitality that renews our very community. I continue to urge everyone to be involved with the Church and the growth of our parish as we become a community for God’s greater honor and glory. Sincerely yours, Fr. Lorn J. Snow, S.J. Pastor

News from Development

Greetings! Since joining the Gesu Staff in October as Development Director, I have been warmly welcomed by everyone I’ve had the pleasure meeting. I am thrilled to be a part of this community and look forward to working with you to help advance Gesu’s mission.

As you know, Gesu is a vibrant community with devoted parishioners, neighbors, school families and alumni. In this spring issue of Gesu News & Views, you will read about the leadership and hard work of our parishioners as much has been done through the Parish Assessment and Renewal (PAR) process since we began this past fall. You will also read about how new technology in the Madonna della Strada Pastoral Center’s classrooms help a former student participate on Gesu’s Destination Imagination team through long distance learning. A lot of things are happening throughout the Church and School and I encourage you to get involved and be a part of this exciting time!

The generosity and commitment of our community is reflected in the progress of the Renewing the Mission Building Fund Campaign. We are nearing the final phase. So far, more than $3.8 million has been donated to support capital enhancements and increase the endowment for the future of our Church and School. Phases I-IV included renovating the Madonna della Strada Pastoral Center, the addition of a ramp into Church and elevator to McAuley Hall making those spaces accessible to all, and a significant increase to the endowment.

Part of the Endowment phase will be funded through the gifts given to Gesu through the Rooted in Faith – Forward in Hope Diocesan Campaign. 374 Gesu families pledged $1,029,170 towards the Diocesan Campaign. This means Gesu will receive 30% of the cash paid on those pledges distributed quarterly over the next five years.

There is still work to be done to reach our campaign goal of $4.9 million. The final phase will enhance the interior of the Church and make the necessary updates to ensure its future for generations to come. If you would like to make a gift to the Building Fund, you can do so online through Faith Direct (www.faithdirect.net – use Gesu’s church code OH283), in your monthly Building Fund envelope or in the enclosed envelope. Thank you for your continued commitment to Gesu!

Please feel free to send me an email at [email protected] or give me a call at 216-932-0617 with any questions or suggestions you may have.

Take care,

Erin Julian

Farewell and Thank You Fr. Dragga

We are grateful for the years Father Tom Dragga has shared with us here at Gesu, and we wish him well in his new position on the staff of the St. Luke Institute, a mental health center for priests and religious in Silver Spring, MD. The institute conducts education and research programs and Fr. Dragga will be working with educational outreach in his five year assignment. In addition to his ministry as rector of Borromeo Seminary College and faculty member at St. Mary Seminary, he has been a facilitator for the NFPC (National Federation of Priest Councils), 7 Habits of Highly Successful People Program, and a member of the executive committee of the Seminary Department of the National Catholic Educational Association.

Watch the bulletin for the summer date of a Farewill Mass for Fr. Dragga. We wish Fr. Dragga good luck in his new assignment.

Welcome (back) Joe D’Amato! This January, Gesu welcomed Joe D’Amato as our new Athletic Director. Joe is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with a B. S. in Education & Sports Management. Most recently he has worked for Pro Sports Experience, the official management company of the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants & Philadelphia Eagles Youth Football Camps. Joe attended Gesu School through 3rd grade before his family moved to New Jersey. Since returning to the Cleveland area, Joe has served as owner and director of operations for Good Game Athletics which offers summer football programs featuring local professional athletes. It was at one of these camps last summer that he became acquainted with several Gesu students and parents. This eventually brought him to us as a volunteer coach for our 6th grade football team. That experience led him to offer more service to the 4th and 6th grade basketball teams he has been coaching since November. Joe loves all sports and he is excited about his return to Gesu. He and his wife both have a great deal of family living in this area. Joe and his wife just bought a house in the neighborhood and are slowly putting down roots within the Gesu community. “The most important item for the new Gesu Athletic Director to consider is, at the end of the day, that a youth sports program must be about the kids. We must keep in mind the Gesu mission and the intentions of CYO sports. In doing so we can ensure the highest quality programs while providing additional platforms for lifelong learning and personal growth. For the program to continue to succeed, it cannot be about the athletic director, the parents, coaches or the Booster Club. The kids and the Christian way must remain in the forefront - I am ready to give a complete and motivated effort in any opportunity or task presented to me.”

Parish Assessment and Renewal (PAR) Update Have you noticed what is “spring”ing up around Gesu? As our PAR process grows in our parish, you can see some new projects and endeavors coming to life. You can hear the enthusiastic sounds of Greeters at the church doors each weekend.

One of the bulletin boards in the vestibule is now the visual home of the Volunteer Committee. You will see that each Commission is inviting you to consider sharing your time and talent in many, many ways throughout our parish. Make it a habit to stop regularly to see what is happening! Simply complete the form available and drop it in the box. Someone will call you to connect you to this activity or ministry. A new Communications Committee is talking about how we can better proclaim the Good News of the Gospel and the good news of our parish whether that be in the bulletin, in Gesu News & Views, on our website, and perhaps even on Facebook and Twitter in the near future! It is no secret that the communica-tion possibilities are varied and surprising in these days. So, be ready to see what this committee produces!

We are coming to our eighth month in our renewal process, and in so many ways we have expanded and grown with the emerging lead-ership that has generously come forward to make it work. Fr. Tom Sweetser’s visit in the recent weeks has affirmed our progress and commitment to this process.

“Habemus Papam” By Fr. Michael A. Vincent , S. J. On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 13th, as I was putting together some homilies for later in the week, our music director, Dr. Joe Metzinger, stopped by my office door and said with a certain excitement, “There’s white smoke in Rome, they just announced it!” So, I turned my computer on, and tried to get CNN or NBC News or BBC America, but -- since it kept freezing up -- I went upstairs in the Parish Office Building to join a group of staff members who were watching a tiny television set. It was just about an hour’s wait from the time I got there to when one of the cardinals came to the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to give the traditional “Habemus Papam” announcement. There was such a loud response in St. Peter’s Square, that it was almost impossible to hear the new pope’s name, but finally one of the news anchors said, “I think he said ‘Bergoglio.’” I turned to the others in the room, and said, “I think the new pope is a South American Jesuit.” The first response to that around the room was “No,” and “That’s impossible,” or “You’re kidding!” But it was true. I had seen Cardinal Bergoglio’s name mentioned only once in articles about this Conclave, but I remembered that he had been mentioned as a possibility in the Conclave of 2005. Later, we learned that there were rumors that he had been the “runner-up” in the 2005 Conclave. Why the response in that parish office meeting room? Probably because Jesuits and their colleagues see Jesuits as serving the pope, not being the pope. We take a view of “special obedience to the Pope in the matter of the missions.” My first thought was something like, “What made the cardinal-electors pick the one Jesuit cardinal in the conclave?” What blend of qualities did Cardinal Bergoglio have that on the fifth ballot he should be elected pope?”

There has never been a Jesuit pope before, but there have been Franciscan and Benedictine priests elected pope. Sometimes the cardinals called upon an order priest to be pope because of a unique perspective that such a priest might bring to the service of the universal church or to the problems it faced in a particular time. In fact, the pope wears what he wears because at one time a pope who had been a Dominican refused to wear anything but his order’s white habit. Since that time, all popes wear white. But now, for the first time the cardinals have chosen a Jesuit. After the results of the election were made public, a lot of parishioners and friends asked me whether the Jesuits in Cleveland had had a party or a celebration of some sort on the day of the election. I was actually in a PSR Class and missed dinner at home that night, but I later joined a group of Jesuits watching some of the television coverage in the evening. I noticed that many of

them were as surprised as I was. In fact, the Jesuit who is the Papal Press Secretary was quoted in a newspaper as saying “When I saw Cardinal Bergoglio come out onto that balcony, I was dumbfounded.” So I guess that the Cleveland Jesuits were not the only ones to be surprised! I am proud that Pope Francis is approaching the responsibilities of his new office in such a humble way, in a manner that expresses his desire to be close to the people he serves. The way that he will carry out being the pope will, no doubt, continue to surprise us. The press tells us that he is tough and determined, ready to do things in his own way. We as a Church will be blessed if Pope Francis can be effective at addressing some of the problems that the cardinals elected him to handle. What is sought, it seems to me, is a wise, modest, humble teacher who can bring God’s message to those who are on the margins of the Church today. We also seek a leader for the Church who will continue to bring the Good News of salvation in Christ to the poor the world over. We pray that in Pope Francis, we have found such a leader. May God bless him and his work.

Fathers Snow and Blazek join me in thanking all of you who congratulated us on the election of Pope Francis. I know that those of us Jesuits who are serving Gesu Parish today stand on the shoulders of giants, Jesuits who made great sacrifices to establish Gesu Parish and to help it grow. Those who have gone before us at Gesu have made it a great place. When we were watching the television coverage later that evening on local news, we were so grateful to see many of our people who were interviewed for a news segment said that they were proud that there was now a Jesuit pope. Thank you for your vote of confidence. We here at Gesu are grateful for the hope and the trust you have placed in the Society of Jesus for the good of both the local Church and the universal Church. On the evening of Pope Francis’ election, NewsChannel 5 came to Gesu to get the reaction of parishioners on the appointment of a Jesuit Pope.

Gesu Service Day This past December 1, our parish celebrated our annual Gesu Service Day by volunteering at 40-some different locations throughout the greater Cleveland area. About 1,000 parishioners served at shelters, neighborhood centers, churches, and nursing homes before returning to Gesu for Mass and a pasta dinner in the Family Center and Bulldog Gym. Father Snow conceived of the idea six years ago as a way to commemorate Jesuit Saint Francis Xavier’s feast day by flooding into the community to express our love for neighbor and care for the community. If you have not taken part in Service Day yet, please save the date of Saturday, December 7, 2013 and join your fellow parishioners in serving the poor, the elderly, and the disenfranchised. For more information about Service Day or Gesu’s ongoing service activities, please contact Meg Wilson at 216-932-0617 or [email protected].

Gesu Parish Service Day at Highbrook Lodge: December 1, 2012 The 6th annual Gesu Service day took place the first Saturday in December. This was the third time our parishioners made the trek out to Highbrook Lodge in Chardon which is a summer camp for the blind and visually impaired and is part of the Cleveland Society for the Blind, dba Cleveland Sight Center. Over 80 parishioners aged 5-65 participated in this service event this year. Much of the effort took place outdoors. Jobs included splitting and stacking wood for future camp fires, painting cabins, clearing hiking trails of trees and debris, cleaning and organizing lodge and cabin rooms and decorating the main lodge for Christmas. The younger kids cut out letters and shapes that will be used to help teach visually impaired students that visit camp. One group cut out and made blind folds to help others temporarily experience what life is like without sight. Highbrook Lodge is a place where campers who are visually impaired or blind can roam freely and in a self-contained natural environment. After our prayer, Greg McGrath, the director of the camp, and some Highbrook staff met us and gathered every-one to assign the jobs for the day. It was a perfect day to be outside, very sunny and not too cold. One of the camp leaders spoke about her experience with Highbrook Lodge. As a child, she developed a degenerative eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa that can cause severe vision impairment and often blindness. She attended camp there for many years which helped empower her to live independently. Today, she is a Camp Director and teaches those with similar vision issues about the possibilities to help empower with their own lives. Highbrook Lodge is a 63 acre facility with lodge buildings, cabins, a heated swimming pool, bowling, recreational fields, fire pits, a sail boat, and many trails that run through the woods. It is the first camp in the United States built specifically for the blind and the visually impaired. It was opened in 1928. It is a place where independence and self-sufficiency is encouraged and campers can improve their mobility skills and their independence while having fun surrounded by natural beauty and nature. GESU SCHOOL Gesu News & Views

Spring 2013

Madonna della Strada Pastoral Center’s Technology Keeps Former Student Connected Last spring, former Gesu parishioners Megan and Art Scherson made the difficult decision to move their family to Memphis, Tennessee where Art had already begun a new job. They gave each of their sons the opportunity to list three things they would like to do in their final summer in Cleveland. Youngest son Jack wanted to be able to see his teacher Miss Shelly Calabrese get married in early August. Despite the fact that they’d begin school in Tennessee that following week, Megan made that wish come true. Then, right after Shelly became Mrs. Timothy Clary, the entire family piled in their van, said good-bye to Gesu, their friends and family and headed down to Memphis.

Megan Hubman Scherson reports that the boys have transitioned successfully to their new school and have embraced the change in climate and lifestyle that comes with living in the south. Seventh grader Nick Scherson has been able to share his robotics expertise with new teammates and eighth grader Andrew Scherson’s math skills enabled him to be chosen for an algebra class that is taught at the Christian Brothers High School. Jack is also thriving in fourth grade. Best of all, Andrew has been able to remain an active part of his Gesu Destination Imagination team by using modern technology and creativity to overcome the distance that separated him from the DI teammates he has known for years. Coach Lana Zachlin has worked with Andrew and many of these amazing students since they were in first grade. Molly Zachlin, Andrew Scherson, and Andrew

Benisek have been doing DI together since 1st grade. In 3rd grade, Madeline Howarth and Kevin Callanan were added to the team. Conor McConville and Charlie Krus were added in 5th and 6th grade respectively. The team has done amazingly well, moving on to the State Tournament 4 years in a row, and even making it to the Global Tournament in 5th Grade. When Andrew Scherson found out his family was moving to Tennessee at the end of 7th grade, the team quickly agreed they would find a way to keep him involved. Using Skype and an iPad from inside of the new classrooms in the Madonna della Strada Pastoral Center, Andrew was able to help throughout the year. He returned to Cleveland periodically for special team practices and he was part of the Gesu contingency which attended the DI regional competition at Chagrin Falls Middle School this past March. We know that the Scherson family will continue to have close ties to the Gesu community. Their presence here was a wonderful gift to many Gesu organizations and we are sure that their new friends in Tennessee are discovering that too.

Soups On! The 2013 Soup Lunch was a great success! Underwritten by Gesu PTO, more than $2,800 was donated to local Cleveland charities, including Gina’s Journey, a charity started by Gesu grad, Gina Cortese. Gina’s Journey helps buy hats and scarves for women who are undergoing chemotherapy. Thank you to everyone who supported this great cause, especially Orlando Bakery for donating the rolls.

Booster Beat

Winter Sports Highlights What an exciting and successful 2012-2013 Basketball season here at Gesu! This winter Gesu fielded 30 boys and girls basketball teams in grades 4-8. Overall, the program experienced great success both on the court as well as in the development of young men and women. The 8th Grade Boys Varsity Basketball team won the CYO City Championship this year. This marks the last four City Championships for the Gesu Boys Varsity Basketball Team. Our 2012-2013 team finished the season with a perfect 27-0 record. The boy’s varsity basketball team was coached by Chris Salata, Brian McLaughlin, Anthony Colangelo and Andrew Salata.

Booster Bash This year’s Booster Bash was an enormous success, setting record numbers in both attendance and funds raised for the athletics program. This will certainly go a long way helping offset the costs of our proud, successful athletic program. Many thanks to Noreen Santelli and all the volunteers for their hard work.

Spring Sports Forecast The 2013 spring sports season is shaping up to be an exciting season. This year Gesu will field 4 softball teams, 6 baseball teams and 120+ members on the track team. Good Luck to all participants!
