For those of you who haven’t taken up the “wearables” craze yet (see

my review of FitBit), MapMyRun off ers real-time fi tness tracking on your phone, with no extra device required. It uses your phone’s GPS to record every detail of your

workout, meaning that you can follow your route on an interactive map, as well as logging your time, distance, speed, pace, elevation and calories burned. The app reports statistics in real time and can deliver stats via voice prompts, letting you know when you have hit your predetermined goals. Being able to get updates on your progress while keeping your phone in your pocket is a great feature, although I admit that hearing a disembodied voice tell you how your run is going can be a little disconcerting at fi rst. “Who said that?! Oh yeah, my phone did.”

AUSTRALIA BUSHWALKING

Want to unlock the great outdoors?

Here’s the key. The Australian Bushwalk app describes dozens of Australian bushwalks, from relatively short strolls to quite epic adventures. The trails cover every type of terrain from desert to sea, and includes walks on Australia’s highest mountain, paths taken by a 19th century explorer, and a circumnavigation of Uluru. FITBITWearables are so hot right now, and Fitbit, in my opinion, is probably the

pick of the bunch. If you haven’t caught the craze, wearables are ‘smart devices’ which track your fi tness by recording an astonishing amount of info about you and your body. The Fitbit app compliments the FitBit wristband device, and it allows you to set goals, and then track your progress on a range of things including steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned, and more. Other features include motivational push notifi cations, an energy-saving mode, auto sync between the app and the wristband, meal logging and calorie planner, plus progress updates towards daily goals and against your friends and your historic averages. To really geek out, there’s a bunch of other devices (including the ‘Aria’ wireless scales) that can sync with the FitBit app and go a long way towards making it a complete fi tness device. Perhaps my only qualm is the sleep tracker, which seems a little inaccurate, but you know you’ll sleep well anyway after smashing your 10km record.

TIMOTHY JAMES BOWEN is an Australian singer/songwriter who has performed all over the world and currently splits his time between Australia and Nashville, USA.

In this interview we chat with Tim about his inspiration, how he became a musician, and the role of mobile technology in his life.

ON BECOMING A MUSICIAN…I taught myself to play guitar and started writing songs as soon as I could play my fi rst chord. After school I was accepted as one of the only male jazz vocalists to ever enter the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and this was where my passion gained a lot more of a theoretical knowledge base, much to the credit of many of the teachers, but mainly the wonderful group of friends I made there. That’s the greatest part about playing music, I think; the community and the

camaraderie. The best fun I will ever have is when I’m on a stage with a bunch of my friends. After the Conservatorium, I made a commitment to myself that I was going to do this for the foreseeable future. And that’s one of the hardest, but best decisions I’ve ever had to make. Hard, because you have no set pay check every week, and you go wherever you need to, to make ends meet, but that’s also part of what makes it so exciting. It’s fantastically nerve wracking and incredibly liberating at the same time.

ON MOBILE TECHNOLOGY… For me, it’s how I work. I can take my work anywhere in the world and be productive, as long as I have some kind of internet connection. That’s mind blowing. Right now, I’m sitting on a plane somewhere over the north of Melbourne (tickets of which I purchased on my phone), writing

this email, checking demo ideas that I’ve recorded, listening to Paradise Valley by John Mayer and checking my itinerary for a conference I’m attending when I land. The fact that I’m able to simultaneously listen to my favourite music, write notes, check details of fl ights and other events on one single device is a testament to just how integral mobile technology has become. And just how much of a privilege it is to be able to utilise!

On the other hand, I got stuck in a cycle a few months ago where I would wake every morning and jump straight on the phone next to the bed. But in my experience it can prove pretty destructive to your relationships and even your own mental state. I think of it a little like sugar. Sugar’s great when it’s used in certain foods, but I don’t want heaps of it in everything, all the time. You need to be able to let yourself breathe to that extent. I think that balance is where you get the best of both worlds.

Coverage: With 3G devices, you can access Optus’ 3G (UMTS 2100 MHz / 900 MHz) network. With 4G devices you can access the 3G network plus some or all of Optus’ 4G Plus network. The 4G Plus network uses multiple frequencies (LTE 700 / 1800 / 2100 / 2300 / 2600 MHz) to provide coverage. Coverage availability will vary depending on your device and location. Bring Your Own (BYO) Device: check your mobile or broadband device is not locked to other networks and that it’s compatible with the networks described in “Coverage” above.

Postpaid Mobile & SIM Plans: approved customers only. If you leave a 24 month plan early, you’ll need to pay out any unpaid contributions towards the full cost of your device including those we were going to cover. Pay Over Time and Outright Handset Payments: anyone can buy upfront in-store. Postpaid mobile customers can also buy handsets upfront online or over the phone but are limited to one handset every three months. SIM Plan customers, as well as customers continuing beyond the term of their 24 month plan, can also pay off a new handset in 12 monthly instalments. If you cancel your Postpaid mobile plan before the 12 months is up, just pay out your remaining handset instalments.
