St. Vincent de Paul Society

The St. Vincent de Paul Society has consistently emphasized both the internal movement of faith and the external action of charity. In our Holy Child conference we help at St. Edward’s Food Pantry, help the needy of the parish as well as others who require our assistance. We bring the Eucharist to residents in Eger and Seaview Nursing Homes, have a St. Patrick’s party in Seaview, work on the Christmas Giving Tree, a coat drive, provide Thanksgiving and Easter baskets and go and do whatever is needed to accomplish our goal of service. We also were able to provide transportation for children to attend camp one week during the summer.

ARCHDIOCESAN ADULT CONFIRMATION PROGRAM

WINTER/SPRING 2020

The Archdiocesan Adult Confirmation Program is designed for practicing adult (18+) Catholics seeking the sacrament of Confirmation, who have been baptized, have received their first Holy Communion and have been educated in the Catholic faith through Catholic Schools or religious education programs. The Archdiocesan Adult Confirmation Program will present an overview of the essentials of the Catholic Faith. Through presentations, group discussion, reflection and prayer, the sessions will cover Sacred Scripture and Tradition, the Creed, prayer and spirituality, the Church, Catholic social teaching and the meaning of the sacrament of Confirmation.

Excerpted reports from an article by Julianna Freitag about the decline of religious practice in another country. “Few parents actually come to Mass, much less encourage their children to do so. Once we used to have 70 or 80 altar boys, now we barely arrive to four or five.” – A parish priest

First Communion and confirmation are still considered an important “ritual passage” in the lives of the children, regardless of whether parents frequent the pews; parents are usually absent in most parishes. Sadly, the abandonment of religious life after confirmation is such a widespread phenomenon that it has been coined the “Sacrament of Farewell.” – A recent survey

“The most revolutionary event, to which not many are paying due attention, is the end of transmission of traditional religious culture within domestic walls. They do not teach the children how to pray, explain the Decalogue (10 Commandments), impart tales, facts and religious legends. They entrust schools with everything, but even religious education has become about everything but - often skipping basic Bible exegesis (explanation / interpretation). So for the first time in the history of Christianity, the chain of memory has been broken. It’s enough to look around to notice it. The children of the middle generation barely know who’s Abraham, waver in their knowledge of Isaac, ignore who Jacob is. Parables are a mystery to them.
