Since its foundation in 1935, GETRAG has developed from a Swabian family enterprise to a globally operating automotive supplier.

Our company started out in the 1930s with the development and man-ufacturing of motorcycle transmissions and transmission compo-nents. In the course of the German Wirtschaftswunder and given the mobilisation that came with it, we extended our product range to in-clude transmissions for passenger cars – at fi rst with manual trans-missions, later with automated manual transmissions. Initial growth in Germany was followed by new sites in Europe, the USA and, even-tually, in Asia.

The 21st century marked the beginning of high-volume series pro-duction of dual-clutch transmissions for several customers. Today we also develop solutions for hybridised and purely electric drivetrains.

Discovering business ideas, making decisions quickly, the motivation to indepen-dently shape the possibili-ties available: These are just some of the talents that characterised Hermann Hagen meyer. At the early

age of 21, he founded the Getriebe-Aktien-Ge-sellschaft – GETRAG. Indeed a bold decision he made during a nighttime train journey from Stutt-gart to Nuremberg – and one which laid the founda-tion for a long success story.

A DECISION ON THE NIGHT TRAIN

GETRAG successfully ventured into the automobile market in 1951. By order of Vidal & Sohn, GETRAG equipped the Tempo three-wheeler with a 4-speed- transmission. The first ‘real’ car with four wheels and the first automobile with a GETRAG transmission was the Gutbrod Superior produced between 1950 and 1954.

GETRAG participated in the IAA for the fi rst time in 1953. Back then, the 750,000 visitors were pri-marily looking for affordable vehicles. As a conse-quence, all major automakers had lowered their prices for the motor show, some even signifi cant-ly. This indicated that a consolidation would take place in the automobile market. With new groups of buyers emerging, competition between domes-tic and foreign manufacturers increased.

IN THE MARKET’S FOCUSSPEED ON THREE

AND FOUR WHEELS

In 1956, GETRAG introduced a true innovation: the GETRAG Selectromat. This transmission made it possible to preselect the desired gear by means of a gear shift that could be activated at the single fl ick of a switch. When the clutch was pressed, the transmission shifted automatically and almost in complete silence thanks to semi-synchroni-sation. This innovative transmission was used in the famous Goggomobil made by Glas.

SHIFTING WITH PRESELECTIONThe Standard Feuergeist T 250 was the last mo-torcycle in a long series of different models manufactured by Wilhelm Gutbrod from 1926. At the same time, it was one of the fi rst prod-ucts in which our company was involved as a component supplier. During the initial decades, GETRAG produced transmissions for some of the most important German motorcycle brands.

In the mid-1960s, there were only three German-designed automatic transmissions on the market. The most efficient of them was the GETRAG Dikmatik. Its design was identical to that of a manual trans-mission, but clutch engagement and gear shifting was performed by electronics and hydraulics.

GETRAG introduced the Type 245, a manual 5-speed transmission, that represented a technological response to the oil price shock of

1973. The wheel set for the transmis-sion ratio for the fifth gear was de-signed as both an overdrive as well as a direct gear. This meant that the fi fth gear had a transmission ratio of 1.0 and directly linked the drive and out-put shafts.

AUTOMATIC CLUTCH AND SHIFTING DRIVE FAST AND SAVE FUEL

In the early 1960s, the number of manufacturers in the German automobile market had declined to 62. The friendship between Hermann Hagenmeyer and Ferdinand Porsche paved the way for GETRAG‘s ac-cess to Glas and BMW. In 1966, BMW acquired Glas and continuously increased the number of orders award-ed to GETRAG. This was im-portant in setting the course for future growth.

TRANSMISSION MANUFACTURING REQUIRES PARTNERSHIPS others were successful in marketing motor-

cycles as sports, hobby and leisure vehi-cles. Expertise in motorcycle transmis-sions had long been part of GETRAG‘s genetic code and when an inquiry from the Far East was received in 1975, it initi-ated what would be the fi rst export busi-ness deal outside of Europe: Yamaha needed a cardan-shaft drive for the new XS 750. The order for series production was not only lucrative in fi nancial terms, it also brought considerable prestige to the company from trade professionals around the world.

Until 1957, there were more motorcycles than cars in Germany – unlike in the USA and some neighbouring countries. These times were long gone by the mid-1970s. In Japan, however, over 3.5 million motorcycles were being built in 1972. Honda, Kawasaki and

After establishing itself in the USA and Japan, the company’s growth plans took GETRAG to Italy. In support of GM’s European production, the company opened a plant in Modugno on the southern Adriatic coast in 1998. The fi rst 55 of the 800 new em-ployees were trained for one year in Germany. German words such as ‘Mahlzeit’ (enjoy your meal) are still part of the vocabulary in Modugno.

Yamaha enlisted German support for the fi rst time for its XS 750: GETRAG developed the Type 411, which com-bined two bevel gears linked by a cardan-shaft. It was constructed with a crankshaft running laterally to the direction of travel – meaning the en-gine power had to be reversed twice.

Beginning in 1993, GETRAG developed the Type 625 axle drive with 6,000 Nm torque on the crown gear – as a module for longi-tudinal installation in the Corvette C5 by GM. This brought the

company to the attention of other US automakers – it was the beginning of the business segment Axle Drives and All-Wheel Components in the USA which was divested in 2011.

DOUBLE DEFLECTION AMERICAN DREAM

LONG NIGHTS BY THE ADRIATIC SEA

Heading for new shores: Tobias Hagen-meyer was 27 years old when he took over the management of GETRAG. He had been strategically prepared by his father to one day turn the company into a leading player in the automotive supply market. An important step along the way was the entry into the US market: In

1982, a joint venture called ‘The Lamont and GETRAG Gear Company Inc.’ was founded near Philadelphia. The fi rst project was launched with 27 employees: gear wheels for the engine control unit for diesel engine manufacturer CUMMINS.

GO WEST, YOUNG MAN!

GETRAG was restructured in 1988. Management was split and all sites were put under the control of a holistic management organisation. The values lived in the company were documented in a corporate vision for the fi rst time. Its title: ‘We do it better!’

1985 1995

WE DO IT BETTER

Page 9: GETRAG Brand Brochure 2015, English

GETRAG began developing its own drive systems for purely electrically driven cars in 1992. The fi rst series transmission, Type 621, had two gear meshes in series – but only one gear – and was particularly quiet, for example in the smart fortwo ED3.

SMART E-VEHICLES MASS PRODUCTION OF HIGH-VOLUME DCT

At the end of the 1990s, Ford was look-ing for a specialised partner for trans-mission development and production in Europe. The joint venture commenced operation in 2001: GETRAG FORD Trans-missions (GFT), based in Cologne, Ger-many. Each partner holds an equal share in the company. GFT’s fi rst development project was an entire generation of auto-mated 6-speed manual transmissions.

WORKING TOGETHER TO BRING HP ONTO THE ROAD

In 2006, GETRAG founded the joint venture GETRAG (Jiangxi) Transmission Co. Ltd. together with one of China‘s largest sta-te-run automakers, the Jian-

gling Motors Company Group (JMCG). Shortly afterwards, the pro-duction of transmissions and components from the JMCG range commenced, subsequently followed by transmissions developed by GETRAG and GFT. A second local joint venture followed in 2012, this time with the Dongfeng Motor Group Co. Ltd., the second largest automaker in China.

MARKET TRENDS

Automakers use different strategies to comply with ever-stricter CO2 specifi cations. Besides using alternative drive technologies and increasing hybridisation, another trend is to use fewer cylinders and smaller engine sizes.

REDUCING THE SIZE OF COMBUSTION ENGINES

Robustness, cost-effi ciency, maximum direct response charac-teristics: The advantages of manual transmissions are beyond

doubt. Nonetheless, the worldwide demand for state-of-the-art automatic transmissions, which combine comfort, highest

effi ciency and driving pleasure, is increasing. Because they enable signifi cant reductions in CO2 emissions and can easily be

adapted in series production to individual needs in all markets and for all requirements.

INCREASING DEMAND FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

-100 cm3** In Germany alone, the average engine size

in new cars declined by 100 cm3 on average over recent years.

Small turbocharged engines require a larger spread and longer fi nal transmission ratios to develop their full

extent of potential savings. Manual transmissions increasingly feature six gears to harmonise driveability

and lower consumption.

* China is the market of the future due to its booming plus of 19.2% and 1,969.100 new passenger car registrations in 2014.

With 8.05 million new car registrations between January and May, China is at the top in the ranking of the most important markets of the automotive industry. On-site production is an essential prerequisite for being successful there.

GROWTH IN ASIA

As of 2015, new cars sold in the EU may only emit a maximum of 130 g/km CO2. From 2020, emissions may not exceed 95 g/km. This European CO2 target requires innovative solutions – including the drivetrain.

INTERVIEW

What is the recurrent theme in GETRAG’s transmission history?GETRAG has been focusing on the right technology from the start. We are still producing countershaft transmissions that have proven to be efficient, ver-satile and cost-efficient. This approach has helped us to generate strong growth with our dual-clutch transmissions in an established competitive en-vironment over the past years.

How does GETRAG react to changes in the world market? As expected, market growth has shifted from West to East and the share of automatic transmissions is increasing. We have reacted accordingly: Both in China and Europe, we are producing customised transmissions on the basis of a global modular kit. An example of this is the third generation of our dual-clutch transmissions. The new 6DCT150, 6DCT200 and 7DCT300 cover the entire spectrum, from compact to upper medium-sized cars. They define a new benchmark in terms of fuel efficiency and flexibility.

How can automation lower CO2 emissions? Our dual-clutch transmissions can be more efficient than manual transmis-sions when used in combination with an intelligent gear shifting strategy. But there is much more involved: Automation is a precondition for technol-ogies such as optimised driving strategies in combination with car-to-x up to autonomous driving scenarios. Highly efficient transmissions will play an important role in exploiting the full potential offered by such functionalities.

How can GETRAG contribute to the increasing electrification of drives? The efficiency of the countershaft transmissions remains the same even with electrification. How quickly electric vehicles are introduced to the market pri-marily depends on the development of battery prices and the charging infra-structure. We are relying on a flexible and scalable modular transmission kit, and our hybrid transmissions are freely scalable from mild to plug-in. We can easily design them to satisfy a wide variety of application scenarios, up to and including purely electric driving in metropolitan areas or megacities.

What does the future hold for GETRAG?Drive technologies will become even more diverse; and automation and elec-trification will continue to increase. Our strategy is paying off: Today, we are producing almost four million transmissions per year. In 2020, we expect sales of five to six million, half of which will be dual-clutch and hybrid trans-missions. We will continue to expand our portfolio in order to offer products for future mobility solutions.

The demands on modern transmissions are becoming increasingly multi-faceted in the globalised market.

In this interview, Mihir Kotecha explains how GETRAG uses its product portfolio to address future demands.

TAILORED HYBRIDS

Whether it is due to stricter fl eet consumption regulations or calls for zero-emission city centres: hybridisation of the auto-mobile is steadily gaining importance.

The new 7HDT300 and 6HDT200 hybrid transmissions help to signifi cantly reduce fuel consumption – the mild hybrid saves up to 15 percent and the plug-in hybrid even saves up to 80 percent (depending on the battery system) under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

All GETRAG hybrid transmissions use torque-split technology with an integrated e-machine. The performance of the 7DCT300 ranges from 15 kW in the mild hybrid version with 48 V to more than 75 kW and up to 400 V in plug-in hybrid design. The e-ma-chine is connected axially parallel to the gear shaft for even-num-bered gears. This torque-split design offers clear advantages in comparison to parallel hybrids: The high-speed e-machine is considerably smaller, and thus more cost-effi cient and scala-ble in terms of its performance. The e-machine and the com-

bustion engines can use different transmission ratios, enabling operation at their ideal operating points. This way, torque-split contributes to even greater fuel savings.

The 7HDT300 has been developed on the basis of the 7DCT300, a 7-speed transmission with electro-mechanical gear actuation and electro-hydraulic clutch actuation for the wet dual-clutch. The mild hybrid version uses an e-machine that allows driving at speeds of up to 20 km/h using only electric power; the plug-in hybrid version even enables a maximum speed of 130 km/h for purely electrical driving. The 6HDT200, which is based on the 6DCT200, offers the same functional benefits as the 7DCT300. It features a particularly compact design, while offering new opportunities for the highly effi cient hybridisation of smaller vehicle classes.

SHIFT COMFORT FOR EVERYONE

Maximum comfort and driving pleasure paired with outstand-ing fuel effi ciency: GETRAG dual-clutch transmissions combine the benefi ts of the comfort of conventional automatic transmis-sions and the high level of effi ciency of manual transmissions. In comparison to state-of-the-art torque converters, they are fi ve to ten percent more effi cient.

The 7DCT300, 6DCT200 and 6DCT150 – the third-generation dual-clutch transmissions – share the same technology called Smart Actuation: electro-mechanical gear actuation and inno-vative electro-hydraulic actuation for wet dual-clutches. This demand- controlled clutch actuation based on modular pump actuators sets a new benchmark for effi cient actuation. The total power consumption of the 7DCT300 for automatic functions is as low as 31 W in the NEDC and thus has virtually no effect on fuel consumption.

The seven gears of the 7DCT300 allow for a gear spread ratio of up to 8.6 with close ratio steps, thus enabling both a high launch torque and a long fi nal transmission ratio. The 7DCT300 is designed for front-transverse installation in mid-sized and compact cars. It is highly adaptable for comfortable to sporty applications, suitable for vehicles with all-wheel drive and de-signed with start/stop and sailing capabilities.

The compact dual-clutch transmissions 6DCT150 and 6DCT200 offer the same features for applications with lower torques. The innovative gear wheel concept makes both transmission systems highly compact. They expand the range of fuel-effi -cient automation to the low-cost and small vehicle segment. In comparison to state-of-the-art torque converters and CVTs, these systems enable a reduction of fuel consumption by more than ten percent.
