Paul J. LeBlanc, Ph.D., M.S.President, Southern New Hampshire University

While the knowledge and information we impart through higher education have grown and changed dramatically over the past century, the fundamental model of the university has not undergone a similar evolution. Several innovative new models of higher education have begun to emerge that are more interdisciplinary and competency-based, and leverage technology to change how learning occurs. In this session, Dr. LeBlanc will share the experience of one university that has shifted to a competency-based model and explore other innovations occurring in higher education.

Getting Ready for the Future of Design: The Impact of Design on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice

Larry Schnuck, AIAVice President and Senior Principal, Kahler Slater

The shift to interprofessional education and collaborative practice is having a significant impact on education, practice and the environment in which learning and health care is delivered. This session will explore emerging trends and best practices in designing the “built environment” for dental and other health profession schools, and for hospitals and other clinical care facilities. The session will also include lessons learned from several dental schools that have designed their new facilities to support their interprofessional missions.

Marko Vujicic, Ph.D.Chief Economist & Vice President, Health Policy Institute, American Dental Association

Richard E. (Rick) Workman, D.M.D.Founder & Executive Chairman, Heartland Dental

For most of our professional lives, dental school graduates entered small, fee-for-service dental practices upon graduation. Today’s students—who will likely be practicing through 2056!—will be entering a very different health care delivery system. Drs. Vujicic and Workman will discuss the role of oral health and dentistry in emerging health care delivery models such as value-based care, accountable care organizations and dental service organizations. They will provide insights into the competencies and experiences graduates will need for the future of dental practice.

Preparing Students for the Future of Practice: Building a Learner-centered, Competency-based Curriculum

George C. Mejicano, M.D., M.S.Senior Associate Dean, Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine

Several efforts are currently underway to “reinvent” health professions education. Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is implementing a novel, learner-centered, competency-based curriculum that enables students to advance through individualized learning plans as they achieve key milestones tracked by a personal portfolio—and complete medical school based on demonstration of meeting defined milestones. Dr. Mejicano will describe OHSU’s approach, including its use of badges, communities of learners and portfolio coaches.

Preparing Students for the Future of Practice: Why We Decided to Grow Our School and Build a New Campus With the Cleveland Clinic

Isaac J. Kirstein, D.O., FACOIDean, Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Cleveland Campus

For years, health systems have complained about the cost and time it takes to “retrain” residents and new employees to practice within their cultures and approach to health care delivery. Recently, two health systems—the Cleveland Clinic and Kaiser Permanente—began development of new medical schools that will prepare graduates for practice within their own systems. The Cleveland Clinic partnered with Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine to co-develop a value-based care curriculum that integrates primary care delivery and medical education. Dr. Kirstein will describe how this new partnership is designed—and how it positions graduates for the new realities of practice.

Mega Trends Impacting the Future of Dental Education

Cecile A. Feldman, D.M.D., M.B.A.Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors

Dean, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Dental Medicine

Numerous “future of” reports have attempted to predict, with some level of certainty, the likely future of our profession. Understanding the diversity of dental schools—in terms of mission, curricular design and geographic location—it is unlikely that any “single future” will prove to be correct. The “mega tends” impacting dental education, however, affect all of us even if we choose to respond to these trends in different ways. Dr. Feldman will engage participants in a discussion of the key trends affecting the future of dental education and how ADEA is preparing to support its member institutions in responding to these trends.
