It took more than 40 years, but the East End Cooperative Ministry fi nally has a home befi tting its outsized mission.

Now, the task is to secure the steady fl ow of volunteers neces-sary to fulfi ll that purpose: “to build a community of opportunity in Pittsburgh’s East End.”

The East End Cooperative Ministry began in 1970, when 18 local faith communities — known as the Council of Congregations — made the pragmatic decision to tackle the challenges facing Pittsburgh’s East End together, as a consolidated charitable effort. One of the ministry’s fi rst efforts was to host interracial breakfasts for students at Peabody High School, and over the next decades, EECM would launch dozens of other community programs, including a food pantry, emergency shelter, youth summer programs and, in 1975, the East End Food Co-op.

In 2005, as the East End Cooperative Ministry entered its 35th year of incorpo-ration, the organization was still operating out of various church basements, without a

headquarters it could rightfully call its own. “We were in 14 different buildings,” says Sally Johnson, community and donor relations director at the ministry, “and we had 16 different programs running out of those 14 locations.”

Frustrated by this lack of cohesion, the ministry’s board of directors began to investigate the feasibility of constructing a dedi-cated headquarters. A capital campaign was announced in 2009,

and four years and $15 million later, the 56,800-square-foot, LEED-Platinum Community House was dedicated. For

the fi rst time since its inception, nearly all the minis-try’s programs are held together under one roof.

But the new space and programs have made the organization even more in need of volunteers and donations. Johnson says EECM has between 50 to 60 staff members and offers a large number of programs annually that include running children and youth programs, programs for the homeless, operating a food pantry and operating a kitchen that serves 300 meals daily. None of those programs, she says,

could happen without volunteers. “We have probably three to four times

the number of volunteers that we have staff,”

Johnson says. “We probably have just under 200 active vol-unteers on our roster right now. And like any non-profi t organiza-tion, we do rely on our volunteers greatly. That’s how we get it all done. It certainly couldn’t get done with just the 60 of us.

“We have volunteers in every program, doing whatever it takes to be able to service the number of people that we do.”

And while people’s inclination to volunteer and give is greater around the holidays, Johnsons says EECM doesn’t do much in the way of holiday-specifi c programming. They do a smaller-scale toy drive and coat drive, but much of their work stays centered on their clients’ day-to-day needs.

“We’re doing such basic things that we really don’t have much opportunity to do much special, because we still need to provide lunch,” Johnson says.

Adds Carrie Hill, EECM’s development and donor communi-cations coordinator: “Everybody wants to give at the holidays. And of course that’s fi ne, and we appreciate that, but don’t forget about us in March, and April, and May, and the other months that aren’t around Christmas.”

EECM’s headquarters, which is abuzz with activity year round is situated on what was formerly a vacant parking lot on Penn Circle. No sign proclaims the Community House’s presence. Rather, the two-story structure greets guests with well-tended fl ower boxes and a red-brick facade; one feels welcomed before even crossing the threshold.

EECM’s three primary focus areas have always been hunger, homelessness, and children and youth. Each of these missions, plus administration, has its own dedicated space with-in the building. But like the organization itself, there is plenty of overlap.

“Our mission has always been the same,” says Hill, “but when we were scat-tered all over the East End, and borrowing facilities, we didn’t really have the ability to do all the [programs] in the way that we wanted to do them.”

A good example of this, explains Johnson, is the organization’s homeless program, which was previ-ously located in East LibertyPresbyterian Church’s base-ment. “Yes, we could take homeless men,” she says, “and give them a place to sleep, and give them something to eat for dinner and breakfast, but that was it.”

“Now, they not only get a place to sleep, but they have laundry facilities, and some of them are in our work-therapy program now, and they’re working to maintain our building and our grounds, and attending classes. And we’re teaching them and giving them chances to do more than spend the night here.”

Hill adds that these classes, such as fi nancial management and interviewing skills, provide new opportunities for volunteers who may prefer to work within their individual skill sets. But she’s quick to add that the most immediate need remains in the ministry’s hunger services.

Every weekday, EECM staff and volunteers prepare and serve more than 100 hot lunch meals for the Community Kitchen.

A few rooms away, in a sleek industrial kitchen, lunch service is winding down. The kitchen serves approximately 120 hot, home-made lunches for free every weekday to anyone in the commu-nity who shows up, as well as to the 50 or so clients who live on the second floor of Community House under the ministry’s emergency-shelter and other short-term housing programs.

Hunger Programs Director Ed Kinley says that his department relies on just three to five volunteers a day to assist one chef, and a staff of five runs a food pantry that services 150 clients a week, as well as a soup kitchen that puts out 300 meals a day, including the ministry’s meal-delivery program and its contract to provide Vintage Senior Daycare with lunches.

“About 180 to 200 volunteers is what we use, and we could use probably two or three dozen more,” explains Johnson, as a nearby volunteer assembles and bags dozens of sandwiches on her own.

Despite EECM’s longstanding presence in the community, many wrongly believe the organization is operated, or at least financed, by the Council of Congregations. The Council, which has grown from the initial 18 local faith groups to well over 40, serves in more of an advisory role.

“Being associated with the church has always been great,” says Hill. “A lot of volunteers come from there, but we are interfaith, and independent from all those congregations.”

Despite the East End’s shifting identity, Johnson insists that East End Cooperative Ministry’s mis-sion will remain the same; in some ways the need in the community is greater than ever.

“With all the new development in East Liberty, one of the things that could be really helpful is the corporate partnerships that we can hopefully establish, and then they in turn can help us help the people in this East End community,” she says.

No matter the challenge, the people of East End Coopera-tive Ministry continue to provide immediate care and longtime opportunity — shelter from the storm and shade from the heat — in, and as, the heart of East Liberty.
