Introduction

• Every week, I’m going to set you some activities to work on, based on grammar, handwriting, spelling and punctuation.

• Some of these activities will focus on things we have worked on before, because I think you need more practise, and some of them will be new things.

• Try to work through the activities each week – they are only short, and will be very helpful for improving your writing.

Activity 1: Spelling: (30 minutes) ‘Your’ and ‘You’re’

• This week, I think we need to revise the spellings of these two tricky little homophones.

• It can be very difficult to remember which one to use, because they are spelt very similarly and they both sound the same when they are spoken aloud!

• To start us off, I’ve written you another little poem to help you remember! Can you learn it off by heart? See if you can recite it to a member of your family!

Activity 1: Spelling: ‘Your’ and ‘You’re’

You’re going to have to learn this right,

The difference between is very slight,

So put your brain into top gear,

And let’s learn to use these words, my dear!

You’re writing, playing, going to school,

You are learning all the time, it’s cool!

So fetch your pencils and get ready,

To learn your homophones already!

Activity 1: Spelling: ‘Your’ and ‘You’re’

When to use you’re:

• You’re is a contraction of the phrase you are. Easy enough to remember. Here’s how it looks in a few sentences: – You’re my best friend!

– I think you’re the perfect match for the job.

– Make sure you’re healthy.

• Any of these sentences would read the exact same way if you are replaced you’re, so that’s a good way to check!

Activity 1: Spelling: ‘Your’ and ‘You’re’

• When to use your

• Your is a possessive adjective used to show ownership. It is not a contraction. Your is usually followed by a noun (person, place, or object).

• Take these sentences, for example: – Your hair looks great today!

– I wish I had your energy.

– Has all your running around made you tired?

• If you added you are in the place of your in these sentences, they would not make sense.

Activity 1: Spelling: ‘Your’ and ‘You’re’

• Can you make up some sentences of your own using ‘your’ and ‘you’re’?

• Try to write two sentences for each word.

• Challenge: try to write a sentence using both of the words. – E.g. Are you sure you’re ready for your test?

• Super challenge: try to write a sentence using both of them, plus one of them again! – E.g. You’re playing football at the weekend – make

sure your boots are in your bag!

Activity 2: Spelling: (30 minutes)

Suffixes: the ‘shun’ sound. How to spell the 'shun' sound: The ‘shun’ sound can be spelt in four different ways. Which one you use depends on the last letter or letters of the root word.

– If the root word ends with 'c' or 'cs' use the -cian suffix: e.g. magic = magician, politics = politician.

– When the root word ends with 'd' or 'se' the suffix used is usually -sion: e.g. expand = expansion, tense = tension.

– If the root word ends with 't' or 'te' use -tion: e.g. invent = invention, mitigate = mitigation.

– If the root word ends in ss or –mit, –ssion is used: e.g. express = expression, remit = remission.

• Can you think of any more?

3. Try to write a sentence using each of them.
