CAVALIER DAY took place on October
22nd, 2010. The whole school participated in
many fun events.
Cavalier Day is a battle between the students
in grades 1-12. The students are separated
into two teams, Steel and Garnet. All odd
numbered teams are Garnet and all even
numbered teams are Steel. Teams go head to
head in competitions that include the potato
sack race, pillowcase race, obstacle course,
water balloon toss, crazy hat race, basketball
shootout, and tug-of-war. In these games, the
teams compete for the right to claim the title
of champions. The competition was very
close, but in the end, Steel won it all. At the
end of the day every team member was given
ice-cream and we all lived happily ever after.
The Halloween Parade was a success as always. The
Lower School Students dressed in various costumes.
They included Ninjas, Nerds, Football Babies, Roller
Skaters, Clowns, and many others. Here are some
pictures below. Written by: Jordan Dawson, 5th Grade

Cavalier Day
I can’t believe the first marking period is over! It has been an exciting couple of months. We have enjoyed having sixth grade in the school and welcoming teachers from the Upper School to the Lower School – Ms. Carelock, Mr. Giorno, and Mr. Cordero. In addition to welcoming these teachers, we welcomed Mr. St. Cyr as our new Science/PE teacher. The Lower School has also been excited to have some new faces from Educa-tion Works with us – Mr. John, Ms. Shantair, and Ms. Taja. We will welcome two new team members in the coming month. In keeping with Girard’s Fit Campus, we have started a new snack program featuring fresh fruits and vegetables at least twice a week. As you will read in the following pages, the students have really enjoyed many academically stimulating events and they have also been able to just plain have fun. We are looking forward to even more academic challenges and fun in the coming months!
It was great to see the Upper School
students interacting with the Lower
School students.
Hopefully, in the future, other grades
will be involved.

videos please look in the O drive.

This year the 1st and 3rd graders
are being taught Spanish, every
other Wednesday, by Ms. Alvarez-
Spychalski and a group of Upper
School students. They have
learned how to say colors in Span-
ish. They learned a song, did col-
oring worksheets and worked
with little cardboards with the dif-
ferent colors. The colors pre-
sented were azul, anaranjado,
rojo, verde, violeta, rosa,

cold, and had a funny smell.
We learned that there was
barely any light in the mines
so the miners had to wear a
light on the top of their hel-
mets to see better. Also, if a
miner got trapped under the
coal, they had to wiggle their
fingers to show that they were
still alive so someone would
save them. They worked from
dusk to dawn and were paid
$0.30 or less an hour. After
coming up from the coal mine,
we took a tour in the museum.
We got to feel the different
types of coal and learn inter-
esting facts.
At the end of the day, we agreed that it was a very fun way to learn about the Penn-sylvania coal mines.

On October 20th
, the 6th
grade
students went on a trip to the
Lackawanna Coal Mine. After
we arrived, we rode in a cart
half a mile underground into
the coal mine. Our tour guide,
Slats, was super funny. He
treated us like we were work-
ers in the coal mine. He
showed us all the different
jobs miners did in the mines.
Inside the mine it was dark,

Halloween is about candy!
Halloween is about cavities!
Halloween is about costumes!
Halloween is about fun!
Halloween is about scaring others!
Halloween isn’t only for kids,
It’s for adults too!
Halloween is about ghosts and monsters!
From the parade to the parties!
To the parties to the haunted house!
Halloween is about hayrides and apple cider!
You carve your pumpkin and watch for witches!
Halloween is for me and
It’s also for YOU!!!
Mary & Sierra, 6th Grade
Halloween is near, everyone cheer!
Halloween is fun, but makes everybody run.
Halloween you get candy
and can dress up like Billy & Mandy.
Halloween can get scary, and some people are hairy!
Halloween you bob for apples
and drink some Snapple.
Halloween you wear costumes
some may dress up as opossums.
Halloween people eat candy corn and babies are born.
Werewolves come out and everybody shouts.
Vampires aren’t bats they come and bring rats.
Ghosts are bright white and without light
there is a fright.
Zombies come from the dead
and scare the kids into their beds.
This is when Halloween becomes
the best time of the year.
For adults and for kids.
Everyone says HAPPY HALLOWEEN

My Teacher Ate My Homework
By Chivvhung Eng, 6th Grade
My teacher ate my homework, I know it’s odd but it’s true
First he sniffed it and took a bite.
He thought for a while as he chewed
Then he took a bigger bite and
Said “UUUMMM this is good”
Then he told me “You pass”
I guess that’s how they grade you

On October 18th, 2010, The U.S. Air Force Band And Choir came to Gi-
rard College to perform. It was really interesting and had great music!
The day after Julianna Arnold, Darrin Brooke, Emery and John Romano,
four clarinet players, came and played amazing songs for us at school.
Some songs that they performed were: A Walk to the Bunkhouse, Ma-
zurka in A flat, and other classical music. An Air Force choir member,
Shani Prewitt ,who has an amazing voice, sang a spiritual song and told
us to “ keep on dreaming”. Oh, let’s not forget Tabitha Haynes, who also
has a lead in the band and choir, she has taken this group to where they
are today. Let’s all give them a round of applause and a big thank you for
supporting and fighting for our safety in the United States Air Force!

Terrapins are here!
The 7th grade team came to the Lower School Auditorium to teach about terrapins, a type of
turtle. The guest speakers told us that terrapins are an endangered
species and need our help to survive. Terrapins hatch their eggs far
away from the water. They hatch 19 eggs or more at a time. Baby
terrapins have to survive a lot of obstacles on their way back to the
water, which is why they are dying out. Some get hit by cars because
they are trying to get to the other side of the road where the water is
located. Many others get eaten by predators. Some of the terrapins
that do make it to the water get caught in crab nets and suffocate be-
fore getting free. Terrapins also like to bite each other’s heads off.
Also, they get killed by motorboats. The 7th graders will care for the
terrapins. They are no bigger than a quarter right now. In the spring
they will be able to survive in the estuary.
We have started Student News. An-
chored by Jennifer Nguyen, Aaliyah
Williams, and Samese Smith. They will
present current events and activities in
the Lower School. Their videos are al-
ready playing in www.Edmodo.com.
