This is a fantastic opportunity for Northern Ireland to market itself to a global audience. We can make the most of this by ensuring that the race becomes a spectacle at every opportunity, showing the very best of Northern Ireland to the world.
Let’s show that we have taken Italy to our hearts! Whether it is cycling or celebrating food, fun or fashion, Italy provides you with fantastic opportunities to theme your event, so get creative!
Think PinkPink has become a symbol of the Giro d’Italia. The rider with the lowest aggregate time is the leader of the race and wears the coveted pink jersey. It was chosen in 1931 because the newspaper that created the Giro d’Italia, La Gazzetta dello Sport, is printed on pink paper.

Put up the decorationsMake the moment memorable! Festoon your locality with buntings, balloons and ribbons. Think of site specific, show-stopping ways of dressing up your area that will turn heads and attract cameras! Invite artists to become involved in creating eye-catching pink or cycling-related artworks that will get people talking.
Dress upWhy not get together with your school, club or friends and become a living artwork. Encourage everyone to wear pink. Bring pink alive with dance, music or art by inspiring youth and community groups to get involved. Make sure they are all well positioned to feature in as many photo and filming opportunities as possible!

Say it with flowersIf you are planting in spring, plant with pink. NITB is working with Translink Ulster in Bloom to find the best ways to do this. Within the council areas entered into the competition, there will be a competition for the ‘Best Local Authority Giro Floral Display 2014’. If you would like to get involved in planting in your local community green space you can find suggestions for flowers and shrubs online at nitb.com/Giro2014
Put on some entertainmentThink family fun! Find the jugglers, street performers, unicyclists, samba bands, dancers and musicians in your area and invite them all to the party. Northern Ireland has a host of carnival, circus and entertainment expertise just waiting to be asked to participate.

We have created a unique character that is being used to dress the Giro route and provide a little added personality to the Giro Big Start in Northern Ireland. His name is Freddie Forte and you can use him to identify your event, publicity or location as being part of Northern Ireland’s Giro celebrations.
We like to think that Freddie’s great grandparents came to Belfast from Italy with many other families in the 1930’s settling in the area of Belfast that became known as ‘Little Italy’ from where they practised their crafts in carving, cookery and ice cream making.
Freddie can be painted, printed or recreated in any way you want from a small image on an invitation to a giant collage in a field and maybe you will be captured by one of the media crews.
We will be placing cut-outs of Freddie along the route and painting him on walls and on grass but you can use your imagination to make him pop up anywhere you want – shop windows, gardens or websites, the opportunities are endless!
Have fun with Freddie

Also, we are creating some site-specific Freddie installations for special locations such as the Giant’s Causeway so why not show Freddie alongside some of the landmark places in your area or ask some artists – young or old – to interpret Freddie in their own way?
He can be downloaded in a variety of forms for inclusion on publicity material and you can also print out a range of resources for use in schools.

RestaurantsCreate a locally inspired Italian dining experience by using our fantastic Northern Irish food. Produce grown and reared locally, cooked and prepared ‘al dente’ and served ‘al fresco’. Or perhaps present a simple ‘taste of Italy’ menu option using our fabulous fresh food or a healthy menu option ‘Fuelling the Giro’ inspired by the athletes.
From pannacotta to panettone, tiramisu to torta di riso, you can taste the love in Italian sweet bites! Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream, and here in Northern Ireland we make amazing ice cream - so engage those creative ice cream flavours, that are unique to Italy, within the menus!

You can get into the spirit of the event by turning everything Italian.
Make the Giro work for your business

CafésItaly is famous for its coffee! Espresso, Caffè Americano, Latte, Cappuccino; sometimes it seems that there are as many types of coffee in Italy as there are pastas so why not create a special Giro coffee deal – or even a pink cappuccino?
Bars & Pubs Think Prosecco, Chianti, Barolo, Sambuca, Amaretto and any of the ice-cold beers that bring an Italian flavour to our pubs. Think Operas, Troubadours and Teatro. Programme entertainment with an Italian twist and let our visitors enjoy a little piece of Italy on our doorstep, Northern Ireland style!

Retailers Whether it’s Armani, Dolce & Gabbana or Prada the Italians know how to do things in style so let’s showcase Northern Ireland on the world stage through amazing shop window displays, creative couture, festival competitions and the best customer service.
Cycle Tours & Cycle Hire Exploring Northern Ireland and Belfast by bicycle can be an ideal way for visitors to meet local people, get a sense of our culture and heritage and work up an appetite to enjoy our delicious local produce. Why not offer special Giro themed tours or create special deals on bike hire over the Giro period?
