Presentation Q&A: Q: Ball State University - can you please finish your presentation? A: Really putting our money where our mouth is. Making sure that we have each conference type selected at their same conference type. Making sure that we are connecting you all to more services that you can utilize. Effectively transition in our RBD and making socially justice motivated leaders. Q: University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: In what way do you want to promote inclusivity and equity? A: Potentially making boardroom where we can have presentations to bring information to you all in the room and to provide more education on identities. We want to all be on the same page, not just saying what we know. I’m also interested in evaluating our specific environment pieces (i.e. we have gender inclusive housing but do we actually know what that means?) Q: Marquette University: What is the most important thing you have learned in your leadership position and how can you apply that to the future?

I think the most important thing that I’ve learned is that there will always been feedback. Some of that will be useful, some will be that people need to let off steam and being able to identify what is useful and what can be improved and what of these things will I have to let go of? I think that sometimes, being on the RBD, for some people, seems like we should have it all together, but we’re still learning and student leaders, and I’ve been able to give myself grace in that matter. Every mistake is something that can be learned form.

Page 10: GLACURH Regional Business Conference Joint, NCC, NRHH ...glacurh.nacurh.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/GL... · Conference Evaluation and Guidebook pt. 1 Review of boardroom expectations

Q: Northern Illinois University - How do you plan on integrating Conference Chairs into the RBD?

Currently, conference chairs are ex-officio members of the RBD, which I thought meant that they couldn’t vote. But ex-officio means that they’re elected by other format than our formal elections. We’re looking at allowing them to vote and having them in on RBD meetings and retreats and conferences. Will require financial pieces because it will require travel costs. Like the Central Atlantic and the Midwest fully integrate their conference chairs and loved seeing how that worked for them and I want to bring that back here.

Q: University of Wisconsin – Parkside: What would have been your biggest setback in this past year?

University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: Move to extend Q&A by 5 minutes Seconded by: Eastern Michigan University

Dissent by: n/a The biggest setback that I had was that right after the leadership conference

and I thought more about how everything went. I was more critical about how I was in boardroom, how did I react to things, and then all of the feedback we received. Received lots of challenging feedback and felt down about myself in my position. The RBD provides lots of great support and I was able to better come to terms with it and see how I can improve for RBC/NACURH

Q: Oakland University: How do you think your NRHH strengths will help you understand RHA?

Every student organization has a different vibe on each campus. NRHH looks different on each campus. RHA has different language and being able to be adaptable to that language. Thinking and reflecting about NRHH chapters I’ve worked with and seeing how things look different on each campus. Asking questions about why that is and understanding.

Q: University of Evansville: How do you plan to promote Hosting Conferences?

It’s a big task. People hear the word conference and having to host it and there are lots of factors that go into not hosting it. Marketing the conference resource host guide and sending it out at the beginning of the year, capitalizing on the conference high, reaching out right after the conference is over and being like you can give this to other people as well. I sent out an email in the beginning of January and got some great responses. Encouraging people to reflect and give that experience back to people. For example, I didn't think that I could do this position but here I am a year later and I did it but you can always do more than you think you can.

Q: Western Michigan University: How do you plan to communicate with the CC’s?

Doing the individual outreach at the beginning of each semester. The biggest challenge was not having the emails. Now I know where to get these resources and being able to have the resources from the NCO will help us get those emails out faster. As being a Director, it’s important to let y’all know that I’m a resource. Breaking down the accessibility barriers and getting out more during conferences to have more 1:1 interaction with you all and getting more things done beforehand.

Page 11: GLACURH Regional Business Conference Joint, NCC, NRHH ...glacurh.nacurh.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/GL... · Conference Evaluation and Guidebook pt. 1 Review of boardroom expectations

11

Q: Wayne State University: If you could change one thing with the region, given you get re-elected, what would you change?

Overarchingly, out of conference engagement. What that looks like is a lot of small pieces

Marquette University: Moves to extend Q&A by 5 minutes Seconded by: Loyola University Chicago

Dissent by: n/a There’s a misconception that GLACURH and NACURH is a conference and

that we’re not an organization with a lot of resources to provide. Evaluating why people don’t use those services, getting into smaller assessment pieces, people don’t find guides useful, chats for people aren’t accessible, people don’t know what Zoom is, etc. Figuring out why services aren’t working in general and then making the proper adjustments as we move forward. Our MOWII Mondays are currently run through MailChimp and sometimes it takes people off of ListServ - identifying new ways to present information other than spirit packs and two conferences a year

Q: Oakland University: Do you have specific ideas to encourage institutions to host conferences?

Promoting conference resources guide when its published. Individual communication piece, but I’ve had the most success. Showing people that you know them, showing that their skill sets can do this. With position recruitment, our bidding timeline doesn’t fit in a great place for people to commit themselves to positions. Bid timeline is mid-January, isn’t a great time because people are adjusting back to school. How does this affect our number of bid intents? Potentially expanding the timeline/deadline for that. Capitalizing on the conference high. Being prepared after RLC to reach out to people immediately. You’re doing great in boardroom, do you want to run in this position? You’re great at graphic design, CO-M?

Social justice initiative

Discussion:

Northern Illinois University: Northern Illinois University is in full support for director for her ideas on inclusivity and her ideas to understand boardroom. University of Wisconsin – Green Bay: In favor of Govert due to her organization, passion to region and equity, in-depth goals and vision. University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: In favor of Cassie to be Regional Director again due to that she has a clear vision of how to better GLACURH and that showed through her presentation. Marquette University: In favor of Cassie because of her experience and bettering GLACURH and NACURH as a whole. University of Evansville: Calls the question Dissent: n/a

Vote: Successful via secret ballot Yield of gavel to Cassie Govert Associate Director for Administration and Finance Election Allen Dahlka Chair entertains motion to open elections for Associate Director for Administration and Finance

Dissent by: n/a Presentation Q&A:

Q: University of Evansville: Anything else to address? A: I was done! Q: University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: How will you improve your CC interaction? A: Challenging myself to find ways to connect with you all and the simply financial nature of the position. Attend socials at conferences, chairing taskforces and taking in the feedback from pieces of legislation. Follow up with dissent or constructive feedback Q: Northern Illinois University: What is something that you started this year that you wish to continue into the next? A: More towards the leadership conference. I released a piece of literature about conference excess. Making sure CCs know what goes into a conference budget and what you all are paying for. Making sure everyone is well educated about what goes into the budget and the financial responsibility people are taking on Q: Western Michigan University: What is an example of your work ethic:

A: To go into the NACURH Semi Annual business meeting, January 2-7th and the academic semester had started. Took it upon herself to let her the professors know she would be absent, in addition to preparing for semis and person life matters Q: Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis: In this position, what do you think you can bring, personality wise? A: Finance has the representation as being boring, position is so much more than money, adding a face to it and show the region how the money works for us and allows us to be able to run. NACURH is interesting from a financial perspective, takes a bit to wrap head around Q: University of Wisconsin – Parkside: How are you going to balance your life and regional position?

A: 35 hours of unallocated hours that can be shifted around, she was just projecting and things could not take as much time as anticipated. Here is what is projected and how is this shaping up then determining what else she could do Q: Western Michigan University: In your weaknesses, you said “assertiveness”, how is that a weakness?

A: assertiveness being a weakness, she is often the bad one with saying no because there is no money for it. Feedback received at the start of the position as she was getting her feet wet learning about the position. Expected more out of her and didn’t have the time to mature into position yet. Q: Loyola University Chicago: How do you promote diversity in your role? A: For me, it helps us create an inclusive community. Ensuring in the language that I use, setting a language for all of you. Listening to all of you and sharing my experiences with each others as well. Being able to tell what I have experiences will encourages others to be open with me. Q: Western Michigan University: How do you plan to be more approachable?

Page 15: GLACURH Regional Business Conference Joint, NCC, NRHH ...glacurh.nacurh.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/GL... · Conference Evaluation and Guidebook pt. 1 Review of boardroom expectations

A: One of my personal goals is to be self-aware. I’ve received feedback that I’m cold and sometimes not approachable. Facilitating open and honest conversations, letting all of you know that I am going to give you all honest feedback Q: University of Wisconsin -Milwaukee: How will you work with universities to start new chapters?

A: Something that I really love to do is talk about NRHH. Figure out which institutions are looking into starting chapters and then talking about them: what does it look like, how it would look on their campus, their membership cap, how to best facilitate the start of a new chapter

Q: Northern Illinois University: You have a lot of goals, and your term is only one year. what’s your biggest goal?

A: My biggest goal, I would say, is NRHH Neighbors Task Force, getting it up and running, and having the task force to get the program off of the ground, and getting you all to help get the program off of the ground to support each other. Q: University of Wisconsin – Parkside: How do you balance school-work life with the ADNRHH position? A: Something that I do is plan out my entire semester schedule: setting up duty, setting up office hours for NRHH, and I want to continue that. Be intentional with how I’m setting up my time and how I’m saving time for myself. Q: University of Wisconsin – Whitewater: How do you feel your involvement on your campus will help in the ADNRHH position? A: I have spent so much time getting to work with others. Working with others is something that I value and leading others is huge. Leading others with the struggles that I’ve faced Eastern Illinois University moves to extend Q&A by 5 minutes

Seconded by Ferris State University Dissent by: n/a

In my role as NRHH President in implementing the new membership statuses. Knowing what it looks like best in our chapter and understanding that it’s going to look difference at larger schools and learning how to guide you all through them. Q: Indiana State University: How will you assist chapters in increasing their OTM involvement on campus? A: This is another great opportunity to implement what I’ve learned at Marquette. What I would encourage chapters to do is that I have been there and help support them through the process: what tools and resources they have at their institutions (marketing department, promote NRHH, promote winners, doing more) and how they can use their resources to implement OTM Recognition. Q: Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis: What challenges do you see arising, and how will you address them? A: I think one of the challenges would be the transition from working on my campus to working on the region. The first day that I walked into a residence hall, I wasn’t confidence in myself. I had to learn how to be confident and

Page 16: GLACURH Regional Business Conference Joint, NCC, NRHH ...glacurh.nacurh.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/GL... · Conference Evaluation and Guidebook pt. 1 Review of boardroom expectations

16

know that I am qualified to do my job. I am able to do this and that I can be confident to perform well in this role. Q: Saginaw Valley State University: What is your greatest weakness? A: One thing that I struggle with is that when I commit to something, I give 110% to it and I don’t sometimes take time for myself. I’ve been working on this this semester because I’ve been going home at least once a month to visit my family to assist my mental health. Q: Central Michigan University: What other services opportunities do you have in mind aside from the pop-tab drive? A: The pop tab drive is the first thing that came to mind. I want to see more service in our chapter. Giving examples, doing clothing drives, finding what would be best for your chapter and your community. I saw the members of my chapter light up when we started doing this. Work with chapters to figure out what their institutions are most passionate about. Q: University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: How will you promote consistent communication A: Currently I’m able to engage with CCs through bidding aspects so I at least want to send out monthly emails to see what they’re doing, what they need from me, and to keep up that support network.

Q: Northern Illinois University: You helped increase OTM submission on campus, how will you transfer that experience to this position?

A: With my campus, I used awards and certificates. With what we do on the regional level, I want to continue that and make Polar Points aware as a result for submitting OTMS. Q: Eastern Michigan University: In what ways will you be a support beacon for NRHH chapters?

A: I want to say “Hey, what are you struggling with?” I want to send out a JotForm and ask about how NRHH is doing on their campus, if they’re struggling, if they’re succeeding, see what they need from me, and have that time together. Here’s what’s going on, if I don’t know how to help, I’ll connect you to those who can.

Q: Indiana State University: In what ways will you include alumni in the process? A: I want to invite them to diamond chats and to meetings that we have as NRHH so that way they can be there to support us. I want them to help write testaments to their times in NRHH and say how they pushed their chapters forward and use them to support other chapters.

Q: Eastern Illinois University: What experiences have you gained by working with the current ADNRHH?

A: With the first regional recognition newsletter, we worked closely together to work the recognition aspect. We included chapter visibility to regional newsletter. We’ve had lots of 1:1s about how she wanted NRHH to develop and I want to take those and push and develop them even further if elected.

Q: Northern Illinois University: You stated that RHA and NRHH merged on your campus. How specifically did that empower your NRHH and why?

A: With that, we were able to engage NRHH in a different way. We were able to have a consistent meeting time, engage them with consistency. We were able to have another dialogue of who were we with RHA and able to develop that connection with RHA to continue to plan programs grounded in recognition and service.

Q: Western Michigan University: In what way do you plan to be more time managed?

Northern Illinois University moves to extend Q&A by 5 minutes Seconded by: Oakland University

Dissent: n/a A: I want to improve my time management by continuing to allot time for

NRHH and for myself because I feel like if I’m not being my best self then I can’t be the best self for NRHH in this position. Schedule time for everything to best utilize my time with every hour that I have in the given week.

Page 18: GLACURH Regional Business Conference Joint, NCC, NRHH ...glacurh.nacurh.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/GL... · Conference Evaluation and Guidebook pt. 1 Review of boardroom expectations

18

Q: Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis: You have a lot of great goals with engaging recognition. What are your goals in terms of service?

A: Some of my goals for service is to work with next year CORS and ADAF since they’re in charge of philanthropy in a lot of aspects. I want to work with them to engage with them through the regional conference and outside regional services to continue working with the philanthropy

Q: Purdue University: Part of the ADNRHH’s responsibility is judging regional OTMs, which requires some judgement of bias. Could you share a time your bias and impartiality has been challenged?

A: Working on my own campus level OTM selection committee, I had a friend who was really engaged within the community and they wrote an amazing OTM and it wasn’t as good as someone who wasn’t as involved. I was internally conflicted because there was a split vote so I couldn’t make the vote. I delegated it about because I felt as if I couldn’t remain impartial so I made somebody be impartial for me so the best OTM could be selected.

Q: Ferris State University: Curious - you have to be a member of an NRHH chapter. Have your potential graduate schools agreed to accept you as a member?

A: They have agreed that they would support me as ADNRHH and that implies the accepting of me as a transfer member. From my understanding, that’s what our conversations have alluded to but we don’t have anything concrete written out.

Q: Indiana State University: With the time commitments you have next year, and the potential wrenches that could be thrown, what are some times you’ve overbooked and how did you deal with that?

A: Some of the times that I’ve overbooked was OPE and a concert that I had in the same night. I had to choose what would develop me more as a professional and as a leader. I chose OPE instead. That made me cognizant of all of my responsibilities both in and out of my campus.

Q: Northern Illinois University: What did you learn from your experience from chairing the NRHH boardroom?

A: Sometimes, chairing a boardroom is harder than it looks. I made Northern Illinois University moves to extend Q&A by 5 minutes

Seconded by: Central Michigan University Dissent by: n/a

A: It was harder than I expected but it made me realize that things are going on. There’s a lot of discussion points with talking especially with legislation so I need to slow down for the minute taker, I can engage with every person in that boardroom, and to be efficient and a team-player.

Western Michigan University: Supports Allison because she wants to be more self-aware about the NRHH chapters

Northern Illinois University: Supports Mitchell because of his past experiences as boardroom chair, working with ADNRHH, supporting struggling NRHH chapters, working with alumni

University of Wisconsin – Green Bay: Yields to redundancy Oakland University: Supports Allison because of her strong stance with

communication and with the NRHH chapters in the region. She has more flushed out goals where you could see beginning middle and end and we don’t see Allison’s lack of experiences as a negative as it provides personal and professional growth opportunities.

University of Wisconsin -Whitewater: Supports Allison because of her positional goals and enthusiasm that she brings to the region.

Presentation Q&A: Q: Eastern Michigan University: How do you plan on improving recognition for CCs, advisors? A: Something as simple as leaving a post card and reaching out to people to say that they’re doing great jobs. Do a social media takeover to exhibit what institutions are doing and increase institutional take-back. Q: Northern Illinois University: What task forces do you want to chair? A: I would want to chair more task forces regarding bid guides and also a recognition task force to adapt recognition to other institutions Q: Western Illinois University: How would you increase bid submissions? A: Spreading the knowledge since bids are intense. How-to nights could be very helpful especially for conference bids. Q: University of Wisconsin: Green Bay: How do you plan to help smaller institutions submit more bids if they don’t have resources? A: That is a big thing, sometimes we do not have all the resources, having those 1:1 conversations. Hopeful to increase smaller schools participations, being available and help to guide them. Q: Loyola University Chicago: Weakness try to please everyone. How do you know when to say no? A: Been working a lot on that this year. Sometimes you take on a lot and realize no, need to set aside time for other activities and have been working on that all year and it’s been going great. Rachel Switzer Presentation Q&A: Q: Indiana State University: For the bid guides, what would you want to add to them? A: For me, getting that information out to all of you and in a more accessible manner and understand the steps. Even if it is pulling it up and seeing each step, e-mailing it out, and posting the guides/timelines in more than two places - post it in Facebook and other flat platforms to access - here you can find this link for this, make it most successful for everyone. Q: Loyola University Chicago: You said that a weakness is asking for help. How have you worked towards improving this? A: Letters of support alluded to taking over for hall director, took over for 3 months, when I got my new director, asked if they could help with hourly time sheets, help in office, respond to e-mails not at 9 PM, do my homework or go to bed instead - need to understand what I need for myself and for her asking me what I needed and advocating in that way. Q: Marquette University: You plan to keep track of the service that we do as a region. How would you implement that goal? A: First goal is to begin with starting out at RLC and look at what we are doing there and look at what we are doing at this conference and draw backwards, most important to see what we are doing currently - you all know what we did. HFind the people who may know the answer from things back ago and sharing it within the region so that everyone has access to that. Q: Central Michigan University: Yields to redundancy

Q: University of Wisconsin – Green Bay: How do you plan on helping schools submit award bids, specifically smaller institutions?

A: When I became a CC at Stevens Point, our bidding was 1 maybe 2 bids a year. Connect myself with my advisors and see where I can get the resources, compare, where to start - start with reaching out to individual institutions and seeing what they are doing on-campus. Worked with a student who wanted to bid for school of the year and everything they talked about was NRHH and suggested NRHH of the Year and having those intentional conversations. With small schools, let them know that their school is just as impactful as large school; really talk to those schools and to understand what you do is great and that even if you do not get top honors it is still important. The most important part about a bid is the recognition and continuing that, whether you won or not. What I’ve been encouraging at what other people have been bidding with and what they’re doing on their campuses to move forward. Ferris State University moves to extend Q&A 5 min Seconded by: University of Wisconsin – Steven’s Point Dissent by: n/a Q: Western Illinois University: Time commitments seem to be a strength, what all are you involved in with when working on your campus? A: Within ARHD, I co-advise NRHH, I also am a part of Titan Volunteers (min six hours semester, bi-weekly meeting, giving back to the community), school, currently working through a mentorship program about educating women in the field in Student Affairs. Personally, I’m a big advocate for social justice and I attempt to attend women’s center presentations, Rainbow Floor, women’s trainings Q: Ball State University: Already have a lot of experience regarding conferences, how will this position bring you growth through challenges and what it will bring? A: This position helps me advise and assist other schools in the bidding process and I feel that I have a lot of bidding knowledge. I want to give back to institutions in the region by moving them forward through bids and develop myself professionally by helping you all. For me, it’s the personal interaction, and developing myself as an advisor by providing that support system. Q: Western Michigan University: Is seven hours enough time to devote to the position, especially around times when the bids are due? A: I averaged 7 hours. I wasn’t entirely sure by looking at the position. When it gets to bidding timelines, it’ll be more. I can devote quite a bit of time to the position because I’m in class for so few hours and I have 20 hours of work requirements. Q: Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis: Yields to redundancy Q: Oakland University: You mentioned you want to implement bidding timelines that work for everyone, what specifically are you looking to change?

A: Looking at when our bid intents were due in January and how the conference is March 9th, was that timeline effective? Could we move that forward or backwards a week or two? How is that affected by your institution? I want you to have time to think about what you want to do for each conference. Q: Eastern Michigan University: Yields to redundancy Q: Northern Illinois University: When you were co-chairing an RBC, what did you learn and how will that help you to transition into this role? A: I co-chaired a state level business conference and what I learned most was how to manage my time. I was incoming/outgoing CC for my institution and I was working three jobs. For this, I think I’ll be able to better predict what will come from a conference and assisting conference chairs and conference staff and the board. I want to teach them about the NRHH history, I want to teach them about what OTMs are, and just teach them what is NRHH so that they feel ready to join as an actual, inducted member. Q: Indiana State University: You brought up that you want to have a NACURH philanthropy, would that pull away from the regional philanthropy? QA: Q: Marquette University: What do you hope delegates will gain? A: The whole cruise theme. At the end of the year we want to celebrate an anniversary - 50th anniversary is a gold anniversary and you usually go on a cruise. Those who travel and experience the world discover themselves and learn new cultures. Q: University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: What makes you want to chair a conference after being a regional director? A: One of my big passions in life is conference. I drank the Kool-Aid and I can’t get out of it. GLACURH has put a lot into me. I got my GLACURH start at No Frills SVSU 2014 and GLACURH built me up as a leader and I want to build other new leaders up as well. Q: Indiana State University: If construction takes longer than planned, what is your back up plan? A: We were either bidding for this or not. We met with the Director OC and they assured us that it will be done by August. We pride ourselves on getting creative and potentially moving things around. Additionally, Hillcrest Dining is just one of the dining centers on campus. We can use Vandenberg to hold lunch as well. Q: University of Evansville: Do you have any specific ways on making the conference sustainable? A: The programming evaluation is step one. Another thing is working with local novelty, somebody who uses water bottles, to bring in reusable water bottles and reduce plastic waste. QA: Q: Northern Illinois University: Voting on legislation MMX which states that all conferences have to support the regional philanthropy, would you change your philanthropy? A: Yes, if the legislation is passed, we are more than willing to support the regional philanthropy. We would still like to support 31 backpacks Q: Marquette: Yields to redundancy Q: Loyola University Chicago: How do you plan to accommodate other regional schools given the lengthy commute? A: Yes, there is an airport in Houghton and Hancock, it’s a smaller airport, but we will be operating shuttle services for those who plan to fly. For the October newsletter, we will provide guidelines for tentative flight schedules and weather options. Q: Saginaw Valley State University: Do you have any concerns with the projected plans so far? A: The plans set up thus far are pretty solid. We’ve already worked with dining and grounds to reserve buildings and spaces and hotels. The only thing that we will be working with and digging into will be the weather and keeping everything clear with y’all. It’s such a small campus that our resources are integratable and we can get problems resolved quickly because people are more than willing to help. Q: Western Michigan University: Currently 5 conferences chairs, how many do you hope to have in the future? A: We’re going to look to about 9-10. We have a large first year on campus population, we’re going to try to integrate them in as many ways as possible. This is more just the bid team than the conference staff. I already have 3-4 more people willing to step on, specifically in terms of programming and setting up spaces. Q: Eastern Michigan University: Yields to redundancy

Q: Marquette University: Is the airport international? And If not how to you plan on accommodating international schools A: That airport is not international, however it is directly connected to Chicago/O’Hare so they could connect to Houghton. That would be the best option for Canadian institutions. They could also commute quickly through Michigan and the UP. A: We wanted to have that implied. It is every CO and RBD position inherently will help put together the regional newsletter. We specified for CORS because they are focused in recognition but all RBD members will be expected to provide. Q: Northern Illinois University: CORI shall conduct inclusion efforts, why were you not more specific with what the inclusion efforts are? A: That was intentional so the person fulfilling the position could identify what would be achievable and what was most beneficial. The RBD can also decide as a whole to say what is most beneficial for the region. Q: Oakland University: RBD considered when making this change, do other regions have similar CO positions? A: Yes, they were all included. This conversation started at winter retreat and pulled ideas from there. We did look at other regions but we also grounded this in what we needed as a region (i.e. alumni relations and being inclusive). We wanted to develop a position specific to that. Q: University of Evansville: Is it possible to reword the wording in a specific part of the legislation? A: Yes but it will have to be an amendment Q: University of Wisconsin – Green Bay: Why was the region not mentioned other than the specific mention of GLACURH? It doesn’t specify Great Lakes so GLACURH can be replaced easily with NACURH? A: Where it is in the governing document there is already a mention of the full name and from there on you can just mention the acronym and it will hold the same meaning

Q: Northern Illinois University: After leadership, there is a comma, was it intentional for service and recognition to be included as one idea or was it a mistake when written? A: Service and recognition can be thought of as one idea, but probably the oxford comma was just forgotten Q: Marquette University: DO you think that the absence of the comma could cause an issue in the future? A: Potentially with grammar and wording, from my perspective there is less use of the oxford comma Q: Purdue University: Why was a lot of the wording similar to the NACURH Governing Docs, so what were the reasons for the changes that did occur? A: Some of it is personal preference in terms of wording, otherwise we would like to maintain regional identity and want to pay homage to it

Q: Central Michigan: How can you include on and off-campus identities within the wording of the legislation? A: Those are identities would not be included technically speaking, depends on the campus recognizes university owned apartments Q: Central Michigan: if campuses have off campus identities in their RHA, how can they take this and benefit their campus? Question and Answer: Q: Northern Illinois University: Is it too repetitive to say “GLACURH” and then the Great Lakes region? A: We are open to saying out the acronym, but if you keep in just the acronym it does not distinguish it between the NACURH mission statement Q: University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire: Did you read through Article 1 of the constitution where it defines GLACURH? DO you think that the continuity of the governing docs when it says GLACURH throughout that this breaks it up? A: I do not feel if this is redundant, it says great lakes region which represents us Q: University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: would you be open to moving the Great Lakes region tot the end of the mission statement? A: Yes, and so between the NRHH and I, we looked at what would look better so we are open. We felt that it was better clarifying the leaders in the Great lakes, so this was better at specifying which leaders. Q: Loyola University Chicago: How adding a name better reflects the values of the region. A: We want to represent the Great Lakes and we want to stay away from potential plagiarism and be more about the Great Lakes and not so much NACURH. Saginaw Valley State University moves to end Q/A Seconded by: University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Dissent by: n/a Discussion: Eastern Michigan University: Opposes the amendment for a number of reasons. The primary point of NACURH and its mission is unification and feels having a similar mission statement is not a bad thing as we are working towards the same goal of serving residence life students. EMU is confused on the summation of including the Great Lakes in the legislation and feels it adds no benefits to the piece.

Ball State University: Feels this is just change for the sake of change and that is not progress Saginaw Valley State University: Does not support this amendment and feels that it does not add any more value to the piece given the legislation. Purdue University: In favor because they believe with NACURH and GLACURH they should be able to use the same verbiage and wording. UW, Greenbay- in support of Purdue due to rebranding and core values, collaboration with other campus organizations, regional and National involvement, and improvement of overall campus. UIC - Loyola should receive the award due to the amount of effort that they’ve put into restructuring their organization. They have also persevere in budget cuts and being a commuter school. IUPUI- would like to support Purdue due to growth in attendance, clear goals, and commitment to different values. UWSP - EIU because of their RHA/NRHH collaboration, creativity, on-campus involvement, and required committees. When making the budget, region didn’t know we were low. With the addition $583 dollars, we can update the budget to reflect that cost Q: UW, Stevens Point: Under regional apparel, it was only $1, did you mean $1,000 or missed a zero? Diss: n/a Q&A: Q: EMU- Is it a specific boardroom, or join boardroom? A: Just somewhere in a boardroom, I have no preference for either. Q: Marquette- Do you believe it is fair for past RBD members to be considered for this award? A: I thought about that. Before being RBD members, they are students on their campuses. If they’re not a member of the RBD, they’re still a member of GLACURH as a student, and contributing to the region, and those contributions should not go unnoticed and therefore should still be eligible. Q: Riverfalls- can you clarify what the selection process would look like in boardroom? A: Most likely something similar to building block and do pros and cons. It would be difficult to give a presentation on a person’s behalf because you would have to know them very well and that isn’t always possible. UW, Greenbay appreciates transparency of piece but believes process within boardroom needs to be further clarified. WMU - In support of the piece that is both inclusive and transparent. Marquette - In full support of this piece of legislation as it lets CCs have a part in the process as well as letting people know about programs in the region WMU- is confused about section a, subsect a and why it is the same as section c. Could someone provide clarity? Yields question to author A: Added this section to make it easier to read. This was unintentional and was an oversight. Thought process wa that this made piece easier to read. U Oakland: In favor of this piece of legislation because believe it offers more consistency with the School Of Year bid and CCs have more of an active role in School Of Year decisions Evansville feels this is benefical to let CCs be part of this decision as they are ones to help plan programs within the GLACURH region BSU - Calls the question No dissent Vote: Consent has been called; 29-0-0 vote passes MMX Chair entertains motion to bring MMX to the floor So moved by: Ball State Seconded by: Whitewater Dissent by: n/a Reading/proponent speech by: Allen Dahka IUPUI moves to waive the reading Seconded by NIU Q&A: Q: IUPUI - Do you believe this will incentivize philanthropies to work with GLACURH in the future if we promote them at our conferences? A: Yes because when we go through philanthropy selection process, we can show that philanthropy that we are committed to working with them Q: UW, Riverfalls - With the way that this piece is worded, would conference staffs be able to decide their own philanthropy in addition to regional philanthropy? A: The way it is currently written does not allow for that. The conference institution can do philanthropy outside of the conference, but not during conference timeline. Q: WMU - Would some of the pre-conference stuff on the pre-conference website fall under that? Could they do something pre-conference and put it on their website? A: If they are advertising it through the means of regional conference, then no. Q: CMU - For the past couple of conferences, some community partners have been picked, how would you incentivize conferences that don’t have the Ronald McDonald’s House near them? A: The lack of proximity to a Ronald McDonald house would be more difficult, but would challenge conference staff. With conference budget, always encourages budgeting for more money for philanthropy such as potential shipping costs. This would be a way for institutions to get involved with regional philanthropy that way. Q: University of Indianapolis - Do you believe continuing to pick larger organizations takes away from organizations that do not have as much support, like the one at this very conference? A: Yes, unfortunately.

Motion to end Q&A by: IUPUI Seconded by: Ferris State University Dissent by: None Discussion: UW, Riverfalls - Strongly opposed to this piece because part of the recognition of holding a conference is looking at local organizations, may deter people from hosting conferences Marquette- favors this piece. It allows for schools to work together as a region and hold GLACURH accountable to the philanthropy they choose as a region. WIU - Opposed to this, feels that all philanthropic events that reflect positively on our organization should not be limited where we put our efforts Purdue- agrees with the unity the piece this legislation brings about, but has concerns that hosts cannot give back to their local community. HAs appreciated moments when schools can give back to multiple causes. Indiana State - Disagrees with this because it limits diverse philanthropy IUPUI- while this would prevent GLACURH from contributing to local charities, these institutions already contribute to these causes on a regular basis. UW Green Bay - Although UW Green Bay agrees with unity, overall against this piece because institutions can still choose to work with this regional philanthropy as well as another institution UW, Eau Claire- Not in support of this piece as it takes away flexibility from schools and showing GLACURH some of their own community. UI-Chicago - Although all philanthropic events will reflect positively, should stick with an organization that affects people across our region UW, Eu Claire moves to caucus for 3 minutes Seconded by Riverfalls No Dissent WMU - Move to change “all” to “some of the” Seconded by Evansville Proponent speech by: WMU Q&A: Q: CMU - Does this mean that if you choose to do so, you can have Ronald McDonald House and your own and you decide how to split the money? A: Yes, that is the intent. Q: Indiana State - Who will decide what the exact amount or sum is? A: This should be left up to the hosting institution; particularly the philanthropy chair Q: UW, Parkside - Because you want to split up the philanthropy and you want to have host home philanthropy, would it be split down the middle? A: This could be discussed on a case by case basis by conference staff; this should not be addressed here. Q: Missed the school my b, Can not give all of the proceeds to the Ronald MCDonald House? EMU - reference UI - Chicago, regional philanthropy should be spread between the entire region and that this would lead to selection of local philanthropies, which is great, but not as inclusive UI, Chicago- believes giving schools option to choose their philanthropy to favor bigger schools that can accomodate to these schools more. If this passes, we need to have a set percentage of what is donated Loyola, Chicago - Concerned that in splitting up the efforts, the total effect will be mitigated UW, Parkside - Agrees with the intent of the amendment, but feel there will be confusion over the percentage going to which organizations Evansville- agrees with spirit of amendment. Does not want to amend it again, but does think it needs to be further clarified. Amendment as is is too complicated to put into practice. UW, Riverfalls - Very hesitant because if the host region wants to contribute to their university, which they could want, would have to balance two organizations and possibly spread themselves thin Marquette- would like to echo previous concerns about splitting up contributions amongst multiple charities. UIC - If a university is going to take on the responsibility of holding a conference, they should be able to contribute to both Time has expired UW Greenbay moves to extend discussion by 5 minutes Seconded by SIU Edwardsville UW, Green Bay - Support this amendment since host institutions may be more ambitious to host a conference if they can select the philanthropy, but can be challenging and confusing to host institution IUPUI calls to question No dissent Vote: 12-17-0 BSU - Appreciate concerns about local communities, Ronald McDonald house still helps local communities Time has expired EMU moves to extend discussion by 3 minutes Seconded by Loyola No dissent Marquette - Would like to hear from other institutions who oppose this piece, when and where would we use this philanthropy ISU- would like to acnowlegde work of Ronald Mcdonald but this piece would take away freedom of host schools and would take away from local, smaller charities Loyola - while loyola appreciate the local charities, believe it is the responsibility of the school to work with local charities and that Ronald McDonald should be acknowledged through the host school UW, Riverfalls- would like to emphasize conferences are revolved around sharing and learning new ideas. This piece of legislation would take away from that. EMU - Call to question No dissent Vote: inconclusive vote

Proponent Speech by Becky Q: Ferris State University: Wondering if NACURH or any of the other regions were

proposing similar legislation? A: At the semiannual conference, NACURH proposed a similar piece. It was not passed by NNB but not NACURH something else. I could see NACURH moving forward from here to combine the stuff.

Q: Northern Illinois University: Yields to IT: How will this affect the governing documents, since we voted the legislation for NRHH Advisor, does this mean we would not have to re-vote on it? A: This piece will have to be passed at joint. We are going trying to pass this piece first and then move to NRHH Advisor piece for the sake of efficiency.

Q: Oakland University: Would this hinder the progress of NRHH having its own identity? A: We are one of the most inclusive regions to our NRHHCCs and NRHH Chapters. I think it would be an example for other regions to put this in. I Think it will not hinder but be more inclusive to grow NRHH even more.

Q: Ferris State University: Since amendments to the governing documents, how would this change NRHH boardrooms? A: It explicitly says the NRHHNCCs will have voting rights over the NCCs on all the NRHH things in boardroom. It is up to the discretion of the chairs to decide where legislation will be seen.

Discussion: Marquette University: Strongly in favor as this would further NRHHs presence in NACURH and still have its individualized identity within NACURH Eastern Michigan University: is in full support of motion because it further aligns NRHH and just makes sense. Eastern Illinois University: Support of this legislation as it cleans up the two policy books Ferris State University: Ferris State University does not support this piece of legislation as we believe that the governing documents of GLACURH and the NRHH Policy Book should remain separate. However, we would be open to indulging this piece in the future if tabled to a committee comprised of the ADNRHH, Regional Director, Regional Advisor, NRHH-CCs, and any other interested NRHH members of GLACURH. A piece of this magnitude should be tabled to a committee due to the profound impact that it will have on the region and because the input of the aforementioned parties is critical to consider and seemingly was not done so at this time. Saginaw Valley State University: In support, with what was previously stated as it makes our jobs easier, simplicity is genius Northern Illinois University: Supports, as it makes it unnecessary to propose double the legislation Marquette University: Yields to redundancy Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis: Combining streamlines NACURH and NRHH while maintaining voice for of NRHHCCs Oakland University: Supports legislation with aspects of putting everything under one article, have some reservations with one thing under one area University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee moves to end discussion

Point of Clarification by Becky: NCCs would have the vote in joint boardroom Discussion

Marquette University: Aware that some institutions are concerned about GL NRHH losing its identity and would like to hear more thoughts about this Eastern Michigan University: We would like to hear other universities how they feel this will hinder NRHH’s identify rather than grow within the alignment of NACURH Saginaw Valley State University: Can address that, feels that after further review, do not currently support. Being able to find this document can be figured out through marketing schemes rather than this drastic event, could move us in and allow us to lose our identity - first to come. Oakland University: we also do not support this 1. Governing documents are voted on by NCCs and the therefore statement as stated in the in the governing documents. And the NRHH strategic plan talks about things about bidding and transition in the plan. Northern Illinois University: supports tabling this 1. Very split boardroom affects chapters and wants consensus 2. If it passes it will only be voted on NCCs even if institutions do not have an NRHHCC University of Wisconsin – Whitewater: Yields to redundancy

Ferris State University: As previously stated, Ferris State University is not in favor of this piece. The current NACURH NRHH Strategic Plan charges regions with creating policy books if not currently in existence and that us passing this piece of legislation, effectively dissolving the GLACURH NRHH policy book, is a direct contradiction and in violation of the current NACURH NRHH Strategic Plan. As previously stated in discussion before caucus by the ADNRHH, in order for this piece to pass and update the Governing Documents, it would need to pass in joint boardroom by an institutional vote. As an institution, we are concerned that combining our regional NRHH policy book with our Governing Documents

may potentially allow universities that do not have NRHH chapters to have speaking and/or voting rights on any NRHH legislation brought to the table in joint boardroom, if passed, from here on out. Unless there is legislation proposed and passed in joint boardroom that explicitly states otherwise, Ferris State University will not support MMG.

Marquette University: moves to exhaust the speakers list Marquette: Point out other ideas, first of all: when finding resources, a lot of things are fitting, a lot of concerns have been trying to find resources, if finding it in one space and one resource, it will be more accessible. Will allow us effeciency in our processes, as we will no longer have to have it go and pass in whole boardroom. Also feel that the “therefore” statement of allowing Title 3 to be voted on by NRHH, if what we voted on will be continued to be voted on, NRHH-CCs are not losing their voices, we will still have boardroom and continue to have boardroom and therefore we are fine. Michigan Technological University: Does not support at this time. Does not feel as having several documents is a hassle. This does not mean we would not be open to exploring other documents that add to the efficiency of NRHH> Indiana State University: Does not support because having an NRHH policy book helps to remind institutions that NRHH is a separate entity and that not each RHA/NRHH work closely enough and it could be difficult to get those points across Eastern Michigan University: Yields to IT. EMU changes their support to not support. It would be more convenient, we are here to focus on identify not on efficiency of NRHH. Purdue University: In favor of this motion, believe that our identity will not be hindered, strength within GLACURH will not be hindered for combining, this bill address those issues and will help further the alignment within GLACURH and NRHH, and make it easier for CCs with things concerning bids. North Illinois University: Yields to IT. Moves to table to NACURH 2018 and form a committee to better form this committee with amendments.

Marquette University: Point of Clarification: Are we voting on the clarification or the motion as a whole?

Northern Illinois University: What is quorum? Becky: ⅔ of those present at the conference Eastern Michigan University: Since that is not a split boardroom, would that be

something that happens by institution or NRHH Becky: Will be a conversation with the regional advisor, I cannot answer this at that

Dissent by: n/a Q&A: Q: Marquette University: What is the most beneficial part of this piece? A: I think the most beneficial part is that Wisconsin will now have a voice from our region to the greater body of Housing Officers. We attend GLACUHO but we can’t represent Wisconsin because they aren’t represented in that region. Q: Oakland University: How would the representative be chosen that would attend the UMR Conference? A: As the piece is laid out, it is the Director, Advisor, or designee, the Director would work with the Advisor with a timeline to select a different initiative. There is not currently a detailed plan at this point. Q: Northern Illinois University: what would be the financial obligation of this? A: The MOU with GLACUHO includes registration for Director and Advisor, including hotel, excluding travel. GLACURH covers travel. UMR-ACUHO is not the same. They will cover our registration but they won’t cover hotel expenses and travel for whomever the designee is. Q: University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee: Would you likely elect someone from the state of Wisconsin to attend the UMR conference? A: That sounds great but that might not be the option in reality. Since we don’t have a detailed plan, I don’t want to make false promises. The point is that WI is part of our greater region and we’re representing the region when we’re going to UMR. Q: Oakland University: Do you know if there has been scholarship funding problems in the past A: More so precaution than anything. The fund currently is not even close to the $2000. I hope to be as pro-active as possible. I can pull it up if need be but this just popped into my head. Q: University of Wisconsin – Green Bay: Where does the scholarship fund usually get its money A: The only way the current fund is replenished is if there is a conference access. Q&A: Q: Northern Illinois University: Second 9 subsection C point A talks about how only one co-chair serves on the RBD, would the only one conference chair be able to attend the retreat? A: Yes. That is the intention of this. The conference chair that is selected as the liaison would be the integrated member and the region would pay for that travel as well. We could potentially include that financially at a later date but just now including people.

Q: Eastern Michigan University: Second M, the outgoing chair should give a transition manual, has this been partially constructed? Has this been in practice in the past? A: It’s not something that hasn’t been practiced. From my historical knowledge, we haven’t done a lot strictly with conference chairs. It would be a new initiative that the RBD would be helping with. The wrap-up report would be helping supplement the transition materials. It would be further flushed out with the conference chair in charge of this project. Q: Oakland University: Section 9 Subsection A subsection A: only one co-chair will serve on the RBD, this is vague, was this done for a reason? Which chair will serve on the RBD A: We left that vague because it would be up to the co-chairs to decide the responsibilities. Typically co-chairs divide and conquer to be better organized and this would have to be taken into consideration when they’re delegating out the responsibilities. We wanted the conference staff to have autonomy over that. Q: University of Illinois at Chicago: Clarification, selected Chair serving on the RBD, could they yield retreat responsibilities to other chair A: Yeah, we would be open to that. The main thing here is having one point person and specifying things such as financial implications. For continuity purposes, it would be best if it was the same person, but say if one chair got sick, we still want the conference to be represented.

Q&A: Q: University of Wisconsin – Green Bay: Wondering why you do not use positional titles instead of pronouns? A: There are other areas where we aren’t talking about specific individuals. I don’t know legislatively how that would look like but we can explore in the future. A: If you want me to further specify 1-4 letters, I can do that if there’s an amendment. I wouldn’t interpret it as 0 letters. Q: Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis: Does it in a different section of the Governing Documents does it say you need at least 1 letter of support? A: This is taking that statement and making it clearer because it does say at least one letter of support is required. This is the graphic or the cheat sheet to really know which one you need to focus on. I also put positional bids into this table as well since it isn’t really specifically mentioned anywhere. Vote to narrow the pool Discussion pt. II: Marquette University: Cannot say enough how much we support Nicole Dalli. The impact that she has made on myself and NCC and it’s not that we’re constantly speaking on her behalf. The amount of excitement she has has such a huge impact. The most important part are the delegates are those who come back as advisors to create continuity in the region and get them to bid for RBD and host conferences and go to conferences. As someone who is advised by Nicole Dalli she is more than deserving.

Michigan Technological University: Echo Marquette support for Nicole. Exemplary case of being an advisor and would be an excellent choice for the Advancement Society Northern Illinois University: In full support of I Younan An for NRHH-CC/NRHH-CC of the year, also support Becky and Nicole Pacewic, and additionally support Vivianna Rubles Indiana State University: Recognize for Mustafa for going above and beyond for GL and NA but for everything that he does. Crying earlier because this is his last conference. Contagious passion and steps up when you need him to. Shows support and passion for region. Western Illinois University: Understands that we do not get these many votes, 5 we support: Nicole, I Younan An - they have helped other CCs, RHA or NRHH and bring back ideas back to campus, which we feel is crucial, which is why we have these conferences. Ashley for everything done in this organization throughout the year, Mustafa too - yield to how much he has been discussed. Yields to NRHH-CC: Vivianna has done so much for chapter and school, was NRHH President of GLACURH, said enough times how amazing she is today. University of Wisconsin – Green Bay: Emphasize for Nicole Dalli, Becky, Ashley. These individuals support their institutions but the region and their future leaders. NACURH Spirit Pack Selection QA: Q: Saginaw Valley State University: The T-shirt design, would that be on the tank tops or for all t-shirts A: The t-shirts will be designed for that specific t-shirt, CCs will be designing these and it will be a competition. Q: Do the sizes go past 2X? Becky A: Yes, they do. There is an extra charge, and we are still waiting on that from SKM. Add in about $2 for XXL+ sizes. Q: Ball State University: Will the shirt design be on the front or back of the shirt

A: The design challenge is up to the person completing it. Last year, there were designs on both the front and the back, which I would prefer, but up to you all. Any t-shirt we choose can have a design on both the front and the back. Q: Saginaw Valley State University: T-shirts with two different colors, confused on why there are two different colors. A: The two colors are ash gray and light blue. There would’ve been an additional $8 fee if we added on a third color. We would give each delegation an even amount of shirts from each color but trying to stick in their size family. Maintain sizes, vary colors. Q: Western Illinois University: Is there a way we could do both tank tops and t-shirts? A: We have looked into it however it was considerably more expensive. To keep costs down for y’all, we decided to stick between a t-shirt OR a tank top. We wanted to be as affordable as possible. Q: University of Wisconsin – River Falls: What if the great lakes does not have 200 delegates go? A: If 200 delegates don’t go, then we would adjust the prices accordingly and relay that back to y’all. We have used 200 for pricing in years past. Past NACURH conference attendance has been at least 200 for those outside of the region. Saginaw Valley State University moves to end Q&A

Discussion: Marquette University: This is exciting, one thing that would be really cool would be

a cow bell, be fun to run around waving them around. Also like how we could incorporate a fan into the roll call. Really like the frokets (front pockets) and support the idea of supporting body image of people who are not comfortable wearing tang tops

Oakland University: In favor of the first option because of the addition of the visor. Eye protection and shade are important because protecting your eyes and health are important.

Central Michigan University: Is in favor of the visor, could wear it outside of the conference and on campus. Using a folding fan as sass could be cultural appropriation

University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: Echoes what previous institutions have said about visors. Fans can get lost very easily and visors will be more useful in sun protection and not being easily losable since they go on your head.

Northern Illinois University: Full support of option two, really like the shirt folding fan and cow bell.

Saginaw Valley State University: Supports the whole first package, visor previous points, also because it’s going to be realistically what we’re going to use (instead of the fan). You can wear a visor whenever you want to but a fan won’t be the most useful/practical. Cow bells are fun but whistles don’t have to be carried all the time - can go in a pocket, a purse. Appreciate the tank top idea because we don’t see it very often.

University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire: in favor of the visor to echo what everyone else said, Cow bell might get to close to MACURH and Molly so in favor of whistle

Ball State University: Echo whistle support, practical and cheaper, especially if the cow bell is larger than the whistle. The visor is what Ball State is supporting because its

useful after the fact. Also, the visor is not viewed as cultural appropriation. The t-shirt will keep you cooler, and you will have less exposed skin to be burned in the Arizona Sun.
