Glenelg Catholic Parish 30th November 2014 The OAntiphons of Advent Anthony Kain PP One of the hymns we sing in Advent is “O come, o come, Emmanuel”. (Emmanuel means ‘God with us). It is based upon the ‘O’ antiphons used in the days before Christmas in Evening Prayer. They give us titles for Jesus, they interpret who he is for us. You might wonder why we need to go into these titles for Jesus but their importance is twofold as they help us know who Jesus is for us. First, each one highlights a title for the Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations), and O Emmanuel (O God with us). Secondly, each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah, the longed for saviour that the Hebrew people awaited. It is our Christian belief that Jesus is that Messiah, a word in Jesus’ language that means Champion, Liberator, Defender, Saviour, Guardian. The ‘o’ antiphons interpret the Messiah word and give us the significance of Jesus coming into our world of humanity. To take one of them - O Sapientia: “O Wisdom”. Isaiah prophesied, “The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord, and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord.” (11:2-3), and “Wonderful is His counsel and great is His wisdom.” (28:29). In our broken world today we live in communion with this Holy Wisdom in our baptism, confirmation and Eucharistic life. There is a theory about the antiphons being a ‘code’ (not quite up there with the Da Vinci Code!). The code theory is that if you start with the last title and take the first letter of each one in Latin - Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia – you get the Latin words ero cras, meaning, “Tomorrow, I will come.” Therefore, Jesus, whose coming we have prepared for in Advent and whom we have addressed in these seven titles, now speaks to us, “Tomorrow, I will come.” The “O Antiphons” not only bring intensity to our Advent preparation, but bring it to a joyful conclusion, as Isaiah will proclaim at Midnight Mass “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”. We go forward through Advent in hope. Feast Days during the Week Wednesday 3rd St Francis, Xavier Up Coming Meetings 1 Dec 1.30pm St Vincent De Paul

The “O” Antiphons of Advent

Anthony Kain PP

One of the hymns we sing in Advent is “O come, o come, Emmanuel”.

(Emmanuel means ‘God with us). It is based upon the ‘O’ antiphons used in the days

before Christmas in Evening Prayer. They give us titles for Jesus, they interpret who he

is for us.

You might wonder why we need to go into these titles for Jesus but their

importance is twofold as they help us know who Jesus is for us.

First, each one highlights a title for the Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai

(O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens

(O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations), and O Emmanuel (O God with

us).

Secondly, each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah,

the longed for saviour that the Hebrew people awaited. It is our Christian belief that

Jesus is that Messiah, a word in Jesus’ language that means Champion, Liberator,

Defender, Saviour, Guardian. The ‘o’ antiphons interpret the Messiah word and give us

the significance of Jesus coming into our world of humanity.

To take one of them - O Sapientia: “O Wisdom”. Isaiah prophesied, “The spirit of

the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of

counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord, and his delight shall

be the fear of the Lord.” (11:2-3), and “Wonderful is His counsel and great is His

wisdom.” (28:29). In our broken world today we live in communion with this Holy

Wisdom in our baptism, confirmation and Eucharistic life.

There is a theory about the antiphons being a ‘code’ (not quite up there with the

Da Vinci Code!). The code theory is that if you start with the last title and take the first

letter of each one in Latin - Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia –

you get the Latin words ero cras, meaning, “Tomorrow, I will come.”

Therefore, Jesus, whose coming we have prepared for in Advent and whom we

have addressed in these seven titles, now speaks to us, “Tomorrow, I will come.”

The “O Antiphons” not only bring intensity to our Advent preparation, but

bring it to a joyful conclusion, as Isaiah will proclaim at Midnight Mass “The people

who walked in darkness have seen a great light”.

We go forward through Advent in hope.

CHRISTMAS EVE MASS at Our Lady of Victories, Glenelg

The Parish extends a special invitation to families to be a part of our children’s

Christmas Vigil Mass this year.

The Mass will be held on Christmas Eve at 6pm.

We invite children to be part of our Nativity Gospel re-enactment at Our Lady

of Victories. The children are invited to attend dressed as Shepherds or Angels.

If you have children who wish to participate, please contact Araceli on

8294 1888. For children participating at Our Lady of Victories a

practice will be held on Sunday 14th December following the 10.30am Mass.

CHRISTMAS EVE MASS at Our Lady of Grace, Glengowrie

Every year, there is a Children’s Mass (Outdoor Mass) on Christmas Eve at

7pm.

If any member of your family (adults and/or children) is interested in being

involved we will be taking names on Sundays 7th & 14th December after the

9.15 Mass.

Readers, Ministers of the Eucharist and characters for a re-enactment of the

Gospel are required. If you are attending either of these Masses and are

interested please contact Anne Kay on 8295 4215.

There will be a short practice for children on Sunday 21st December after the

9.15 Mass.

For the Christmas Eve Mass the boys can dress as shepherds (Tea towel on

head, sandals and a long shirt) and the girls as angels (White dress and tinsel in

hair, no wings). This is a great opportunity for all children to participate in the

real meaning of Christmas. Please bring your own chairs/rugs as no other

seating will be provided.

Anne Kay on behalf of the Christmas Eve Mass Committee.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

CHRISTMAS APPEAL, & THE CHRISTMAS TREES.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is asking you for two things this weekend.

First, we need your support of our Christmas Appeal for ongoing funds so that

we can continue to operate through the coming year. Envelopes are available

in the churches for you to send your donation in to our administration centre

in the city; please indicate on the envelope that it comes from the Glenelg

Parish.

Secondly, we ask you to take a tag from the Christmas tree, and return the

item indicated over the next few weeks (please leave your gift under the tree).

We will be assembling the hampers on the afternoon of Sunday December 21st,

and delivering them that day and the next.

Although we all like to give gifts for children, please remember that we also

give hampers and presents to many single adults; we have arranged the tags

on the trees to cater for all the people we serve, so please don't be too choosy

about the tag you take.

We are immensely grateful for each and every gift, as are the people to whom

they are given.
