Principal’s Message

Welcome back to term 1 2020, I am looking forward to hearing about everyone’s holidays over the coming weeks.

The theme for term 1 will be ‘Australia’s First People’. We will be looking at the evolution of the world from the ice age to today.

We have also attached an updated Term 1 calendar.

I have scheduled a parent information session for the 20/2/20 at 9.30am. This will just be a chance for you to ask any questions you have and to find out about scheduled events for the year.

Regards,

Mr Southwell

Now that the holidays are over, school is back on track. Today we had fun colouring in the book covers for our maths, English and Spelling Journal. We added some extra drawings on our book covers as well as colouring in the picture on the cover. We also made our tote tray nametags. We started making a powerpoint about our holidays and we each got one slide to decorate with things about our holidays. By Jessica

Dear readers, this week in the 3-6 classroom, we have been doing some poems and this is the start of mine:

K– 2 News What a fantastic start to the year we have had! Our new kindergarten students are a delight and are settling in to the rhythms and routines of daily school life. Year 2 has stepped into their role of class leaders beautifully, by showing how to apply themselves to their learning during class time and enjoy themselves thoroughly during breaks.

I was so proud of everyone who attended the swimming carnival last Friday, not just for how they conducted themselves throughout the day, but how they tried their best whether in the big pool, the medium or the wading pool. I was also very proud of Mrs Leighton Daly and Mrs Southwell for competing in the parent teacher race with such good spirit - they were awesome weren't they!

In literacy we have started (as always) with a recount

of our holiday. This will serve as the baseline for the

students to see how much they've improved over the

year as they compare their holiday recounts to this

one for the next three terms. We have adopted a new

whole of school spelling and synthetic phonics

program which we have heard has had great results

in multistage classrooms. We have been reading in

the classroom each day and our home reader

program will start next week. We have also adopted a

new whole of school maths program focussing on

problem solving skills and strategies that can be

applied in a variety of situations (as I always tell the

children - maths is everywhere!). Our history unit this

term is Australia's First Peoples and we have had a

great first week looking at the migration of humans

across the world from over 250,000 years before

present in Africa to 65,000 years before present in

Australia. We will spend the next few weeks looking

at early life and culture of Aboriginal Peoples,

including the environment and megafauna when they

first arrived, before then focussing on the local

Gundungurra people and culture.

I asked our new kindergarten students what they liked about school so far...Judd has been away so I shall provide his answers in the next newsletter.
