Global CurriculumThe Kaplan International English (KIE) Global Curriculum provides a framework for the design and delivery of all KIE courses. The Curriculum makes clear how our many different courses relate to one another, and by providing a standard framework, it also ensures that courses, assessment, and certification are consistent and transparent across all regions.
The Curriculum is also explicitly linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which is the most widely recognized framework of reference for languages across the globe. This link provides our levels and our certification with external validity, maximum portability, and widespread recognition.
The CurriculumThe Global Curriculum describes what language learners can do at a series of seven levels of attainment. Those levels are linked to the CEFR as below.
KIE Curriculum Level CEFR LevelProficiency C2Advanced C1
Higher Intermediate B2Intermediate B1
Lower Intermediate A2Elementary A1Beginner Pre-A1
Each level of the Curriculum contains a general description of what a language learner at that level should be able to do.
This is followed by a much more comprehensive list of the competencies necessary for communication, and the related knowledge and skills, in a series of can-do statements.
Those descriptions of what learners can do in English are divided into the following areas:
• Spoken Production
• Spoken Interaction
• Writing
• Listening
• Reading
• Pronunciation
Kaplan International English Global Curriculum 20142
The Curriculum also lists the linguistic knowledge expected at each level, under the following two categories:
• Vocabulary
• Grammar
Finally the Curriculum provides a descriptive list of what successful language learners do. Students are encouraged to incorporate these strategies into their study habits, to become better language learners:
• Study Skills
By providing a detailed description of what students should be able to do at each level, the Global Curriculum provides the framework for our many courses, and each and every KIE course is written within that framework.
The syllabus for each of the KIE Courses outlines which level the course is, which can-do descriptors are covered, and in what order. Syllabuses and materials for all courses and programmes in Kaplan International English will be developed in line with the Global Curriculum. Many courses and programmes, like General English and Structured Study, will be developed regionally, to take into account linguistic and operational differences. Other courses, such as Specific Skills or English for Specific Skills, may be developed within individual Centers. In all cases, however, using the Curriculum as the common framework ensures consistency across regions.
Assessment for all courses will also be developed in line with the Global Curriculum, with a common Placement and Exit Test, and common Level Tests used across all regions. Standardized assessment will also ensure that certification of students is reliable, valid and transparent.
Using the Curriculum as a framework
