Flexible gas analysis over the entire line

Measuring difficult, selective gas components such as ammonia (NH3), hydrogen fluoride (HF), and hydrogen chloride (HCI) is a major challenge for process analysis and emission monitoring. The GM700 in-situ gas analyzer opens up new options here. With unparalleled flexibility – without the need for test gases.

The GM700 gas analyzer operates reliably and efficiently. Thanks to its innovative in-situ measuring technology, the analyzer can be mounted at the measurement location directly in the duct through which the gas flows. The benefits: time and cost savings thanks to simple installation and commissioning, low maintenance requirements, and very short response times. The GM700 delivers a high-resolution measurement using

direct laser spectroscopy (see below) with a precisely adjust-ed spectral line. The result: fast and undistorted recording of measuring gas concentrations without time-consuming gas extraction, conditioning, and cost-intensive transportation. Gas components that can be measured by the GM700 include: NH3, HF, and HCI.

Technology and principle of operation

Laser spectroscopy (tunable diode laser spectroscopy, TDLS) In laser spectroscopy, the laser beam from the sender is sent through the gas to be measured to the reflector. From there, it is reflected back to a sensitive detector (photo diode) in the sender/receiver unit. The wavelength of the la-ser diode is adjusted to a spectral line of the measuring gas component. This is scanned by modulating the wavelength and recorded by the photo diode of the detector. A signal evaluation then provides the gas concentration based on the wavelength-specific absorption of the measurement signal. The TDLS principle therefore allows gas components in a gas mixture to be measured selectively.

GM700 IN-SITU GAS ANALYzERS

Product descriptionHigh reliability and precision as well as minimal response times are the distin-guishing features of the GM700 laser gas analyzer. Based on the principle of TDLS (Tunable Diode Laser Spectros-copy) and by using specific light absorp-

tion, the GM700 is able to measure several gas components, such as NH3, HF, HCl or H2O. The in-situ measurement is ideal for the fast determination of gas concentrations in process control and emission monitoring.

At a glance• High selectivity due to high spectral

resolution• Short response times• No calibration required

• No moving parts: minimal wear and tear

• No gas sampling and conditioning required

Your benefits• Unbiased measuring values due to

in-situ measurement directly in the process

• Best application solution using probe or cross-duct type

• High reliability during operation• Also applicable for harsh environ-

ment conditions• Detection of fast and short-term

process fluctuations

the tried-and-tested in-situ GM32 analyzer from SIcK – optimized for non-con-tact measurement in emissions plants as well as for process gases – is available in several versions: a standard version, an atex version and with op-timized analysis technology for trS measurement in the Kraft pulp industry.

Direct in-situ measurementWith the GM32 in-situ gas analyzer, your control technology systems are able to work with actual values in "real time". This is because it measures reactive gases including pressure and temper-ature in-situ, in other words, directly in the gas duct. Moreover, this is achieved quickly and without the need for compli-cated gas sampling or transportation, therefore avoiding the risk of changing or falsifying the gas composition.

Thanks to automatic self-monitoring, you can rely on the measured values and you receive prior warning in the event of deviations.

Combinable for simultaneous or individual measurementDepending on requirements, the GM32 can be configured simultaneously for measured components SO2, NO, NO2 and NH3, individually or in respective combinations thereof. For applications in the Kraft pulp industry, as GM32 TRS-PE (PE = Pulp Emission) version with measuring probe, also for TRS measur-ing components H2S, CH3SH, (CH3)2S and (CH3)2S2. Temperature and pressure reference values are measured and calculated automatically.

Simple and cost-effectiveSICK's in-situ measuring devices have been characterized by their minimal op-erating costs for many years. Thanks to

this technology, complex maintenance and problems related to gas transporta-tion and gas conditioning have become a thing of the past. The measured values are taken directly in the measuring path in the gas duct. Adjustment with test gases is not necessary.

In addition, the automatic QAL3 moni-toring without test gases results in lower operating costs.

Convenient through remote diagnosticsEasier and faster access for remote data acquisition, remote diagnostics and maintenance thanks to comprehensive networking capability e.g. via Ethernet or OPC server connection.

In-situ gas analyzer GM32:for emissions and process gases

Optimized evaluation processesSICK has perfected the DOAS evaluation process (DOAS = Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) as well as chemometrics in the GM32. It offers an equal level of measurement accuracy in both the high and low measuring ranges.

The signal evaluation is undertaken in the UV spectrum over an extremely broad range. GM32 evaluates the optimal spectral range for measuring range and measuring components in each case. This enables an extremely high level of accuracy to be achieved. Cross sensitivity

to foreign gases, dust and humidity is also ruled out. This means that flue gas purification systems can be efficiently controlled even under high dust loads. Thanks to automatic beam tracking, the GM32 measures just as efficiently even in the event of severe vibrations.

In-situ measurement in atEX zones:a new solution for familiar tasks

GM32 gas analyzers with in-situ measuring technology have a long track record both in emissions monitoring as well as in process control applications. now the rugged GM32 is also available in an atEX version as the GM32 Ex, with cross-duct and measuring probe versions for gas temperatures up to 650°c, for example, for use in the chemicals industry or refineries, but also for measuring tasks in the natural gas or crude oil indus-try as well as emissions monitoring supporting sulfur recovery plants or fcc plants.

A wide scope of safety functions for Ex-rangesThe in-situ GM32 Ex gas analyzer corre-sponds to both ATEX category 3G (ATEX Zone 2) and ATEX category 2G (ATEX Zone 1) in the measuring probe as well as the cross duct version. The sender/receiver unit (SR unit) and the connec-tion unit are overpressure encapsulated to ensure that no explosive gases can penetrate into the units. The required permanent overpressure in the housing is ensured by protective gases with a cor-responding control system.

Sophisticated system technologyThe overpressure encapsulated GM32 component's sender/receiver and con-nection unit are connected to each other via a pressurized hose which contains the electrical connection cable. The Ex-p controller is attached to the connection unit. All of the other device components are non-electronic and therefore intrinsi-cally safe. The protective gas is fed to the sender/receiver unit via an Ex-p valve. In order to protect against contamina-tion or aggressive gases, the sender/receiver unit and, depending on version, the reflector unit is flushed by an ATEX approved air pruge unit.

The advantages remainThe tried-and-tested advantages of SICK's in-situ measuring technology remain in the GM32 Ex, such as direct, rapid measurement without the need for gas transport, without gas conditioning, and especially, its automatic self-testing system without test gases. GM32 TRS-PE (PE = Pulp Emission): version with GPP gas diffusion probe

GPP gas diffusion probe

Sender/receiver unit with integrated, TRS optimized, spectroscopic evaluation procedure

Simple, precise, cost-effective:trS emissions safely under control

The first and only direct TRS measure-ment in the Kraft pulp process: GM32 trS-PE (PE = Pulp Emission) from SIcK.

TRS measurement success in the Kraft pulp industryLime kilns and black liquor recovery boiler for the source for TRS components in Kraft pulp plants. The limit values for these emissions are strictly regulated by the authorities and are typically set between 5 ... 30 mg/m3 (3 ... 20 ppm). Depending on restriction, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) must be monitored alone or as part of the sum TRS parameter.

UV spectroscopy – the optimal measuring technologyThe GM32 TRS-PE with GPP measuring probe is the optimal solution for continuous measurement of primary TRS compo-nents such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methyl mercaptan (CH3SH). In addition, primary TRS components dimethyl sulfide ((CH3)2S ) and dimethyl disulfide (CH3)2S2) can also be measured. This means extremely efficient process control can be achieved at minimum cost and without expensive auxiliary materials. Of course, TRS measurement with the GM32 TRS-PE also enables simultaneous measurement of SO2, NO and NH3 – all with a single analyzer.

Monitoring and control of flue gas in purification plants

the in-situ GM32 analyzer with its optimized measuring technology is suitable for nitrogen oxide measurement for controlling catalytic processes in flue gas denitrification and desulfurization plants. The GM32 is the best choice, espe-cially in situations where rapid measurement is required directly in the gas duct, even under high dust loads or where saturated sample gas is expected.

Flue gas denitrification plants – fast, unaltered measurementEnvironment protection laws demand reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx content) in flue gases. The reduction of the NOx content is typically achieved with flue gas denitrification plants (DeNOx) using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or selective non-catalytic reduction (SCNR). The addition of ammonia (NH3) to the flue gas – at temperatures of approx. 400 °C – causes the nitrogen oxide to be converted to water and nitrogen. In order to determine and monitor the required NH3 volume, it is necessary to measure NO concentrations at the inlet to the denitrification plant. In order to determine the effectiveness of the cata-lytic denitrification process, at the output of the DeNOx plant NO and additionally the NH3 concentration (slip) is again measured. This measurement serves to provide additional monitoring and main-tenance of environmental standards.

GM32 delivers the best solutionThe key factor for efficient monitoring and control in flue gas denitrification plants is the extremely short response time for measurement. They can significantly increase the effectiveness and service life of the plant and simulta-neously prevent fouling of the catalytic converter as well as avoid ammonia

pollutants in the flue ash. The GM32 from SICK delivers reliable measurement results without delay for monitoring NO concentrations, both in raw gas as well as clean gas ducts, also for NH3 slip measurement downstream of the catalyt-ic converter.

Desulphurization plants and emissions measurement

Desulphurization plants (DeSOx) use, among other things, wet scrubber sys-tems in order to spray the flue gas with a calcareous solution after the dust has been removed. This process causes the sulfur oxides in the flue gas to react and be converted to calcium sulfite or sulfate. These products are then removed from the process by dehydration. Alternatively, compressed air can be added to the sulfite sludge causing the calcium sulfite to oxidize into gypsum.

The GM32 from SICK has also proven itself in such process control applications as well as in continuous emissions mon-itoring, regardless of whether the mea-sured gases are saturated (wet) or dry.

Product BenefitsThe fast GM32 with direct, delay-free in-situ measurement of SO2, NO, NO2 and NH3 is the ideal analyzer for efficient monitoring and control of flue gas denitrifica-tion plants.

For denitrification:

• Optimization of ammonia spraying in order to minimize NH3 slip.

• Continuous monitoring of catalytic converter effectiveness.

• Reduction of bound ammonia in flue ash.

• Contamination of catalytic convert-er and other system components due to ammonium salts avoided.

• Increase of catalytic converter ser-vice life and minimization of system downtime

For flue gas desulfurization:

• SO2 measurement for regulating lime spraying

• Monitoring of desulfurization effec-tiveness

• Continuous emissions monitoring

GM35 IN-SITU GAS ANALYZER

Simple and cost-savingWith the innovative in-situ measurement technology, SICK provides equipment solutions mainly characterized by simple installation and start-up, minimum maintenance and extremely short response times. This is because the GM35 measures the sample gases, including pressure and temperature in-situ, i.e. directly in the gas carrying duct. Moreover, this is achieved quickly and without complicated gas sampling or transporta-tion, therefore avoiding the risk of changing or falsifying the gas composition.

The GM35 has a compact sender/receiver unit with zero point reflector, gas cell and grid filter which enable a real zero point and span test (QAL3). Complicated adjustment with test gases is not required.

Proven measurement technologyIn-situ gas analyzer GM35 contains optical and electronic subassemblies for simultaneous or individual measurement of gas components CO2, H2O and CO or N2O. The in-situ measure-ment technology allows direct installation of the analyzer at the respective measuring location.

Two versions are available:

• A cross-duct version for representative measured results across the entire duct cross diameter.

• A measuring probe version – optimized for single-sided installation allowing simple integration into an extremely varied range of system conditions.

Efficient control of combustion and drying processes

Efficient control of process-relevant parameters is important for controlling and regulating combustion or drying processes. Apart from oxygen, mainly CO must be reliably and exactly measured. In drying processes, the humidity curve during the process must be acquired and the plants monitored for CO concentrations. The in-situ gas analyzer GM35 from SICK is predestined for this purpose because it measures CO, CO2 and H2O simultaneously and directly in the process.

Moreover, monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in industrial plants is becoming more and more important. The GM35 measures the concentrations of greenhouse gases CO2 and N2O as well as CO also in this sector and measures fast or short-time process fluctuations with excellent precision.

GM35 IN-SITU GAS ANALYZERS

Product descriptionSimultaneous or individual measure-ments: the GM35 gas analyzer mea-sures CO2, H2O and CO or N2 concen-trations as well as temperature and pressure quickly, easily and economi-cally. The in-situ measurement technol-ogy of the GM35 records the measured

values directly in the gas-carrying duct without gas sampling. Reliability, accuracy and short response time of the analyzer offer a key advantage for efficient control loops in all CO and CO2 generating processes.

At a glance• Dynamic humidity correction• Fast in-situ measurement directly in

the process• Simultaneous determination of up to

three gas components, temperature and pressure

• No gas sampling and conditioning• Gas testable version of measuring
