Your #First5weeks at GMIT will be the most important time you spend in college. During this time it ishoped that you develop a healthy student lifestyle and discover GMIT's social and communitynetworks which will help you to achieve your academic goals. It is important to attend the Inductiondays from 6th – 8th September as per your programme start time, which you will find in this brochure.

On your first day you will receive your schedule for the remainder of the week. While each of GMIT’s five campuses will have different schedules for the welcome programme, common elementswill be expanded upon during the #First5weeks of the first term.

ParkingParking permits are required at theGalway & Mayo Campuses. An electronic parking permit system isin place which assigns a virtual permitfollowing an online application (via address below) Permits are notrequired at CCAM, Letterfrack &Mountbellew campuses.

In the Galway campus, designated greenparking areas are for students withpermits. To avoid penalties, studentsshould only park in designated areas.Checking of student parking permitswill commence in mid-September. For further information on GMIT car parking, visit:www.gmit.ie/about/visiting-gmit

When you arrive...Galway, CCAM, Letterfrack & Mayo Students:

Your STUDENT AMBASSADORS will meet & greet you, provideyou with a schedule of activities for Week 1 & ensure you find outwhere you should be for all the day’s activities when you arrive oncampus.

Your student ambassadors will give you a CAMPUS TOUR duringyour first 2 days – helping you to familiarise yourself with thelayout & location of everything you need.

If you are waiting for grant approval, you can still register onlineby selecting “Pay Later”. Once registered, you can collect yourSTUDENT ID in:

There will be a brief introduction to the LIBRARY during the ITServices session. Library tours will be organised during the#First5weeks Welcome Programme.

STUDENT SERVICES provide Health, Counselling,Careers, Chaplaincy & Access & Disability servicesto students. You will meet your Student Servicesteam during your first 2 weeks, who can offeradvice & information on each service. Yellow feeton the ground & yellow doors represent Student Services inGMIT’s Galway campuses. Remember to follow the yellow feetthroughout the year if you need advice – we’re here for you!

The STUDENTS’ UNION (SU) is here to ensure you have a greatstudent experience in GMIT. The SU assists with accommodationissues to helping with exam appeals, in addition to,taking care of any entertainment & social outingsthat go on both on & off-campus. All students willmeet with their SU within the first 2 weeks of term.

Various information sessions/workshops, sports tasters,programme activities & social events will be scheduledthroughout the #First5weeks, so be sure to check out weekly#First5weeks activities posters in all campuses!

During the #First5weeks, pop-up information counters & stands will be in communal areas where you can findinformation on just about anything GMIT-related. We’llalso have a team of staff & students wearing ASK ME badges, soif you have a question, just ask.

When you’re here...What to ExpectWe know that moving away from home to go to college is a bigchange & the #First5weeks Welcome Programme is designed tomake it easier for you to find your feet & get settled.

During your #First5weeks at college, we have scheduled a varietyof activities, both academic & social, to help familiarise students atall GMIT campuses with college, course work & life (as you will getto know it) as a third level student. There will be a range of fun &interesting opportunities for you to interact & socialise with yournew classmates. In other words, we want you to have fun settling in.(Not too much fun though, there still needs to be time for study!)

It is important for all new students to attend the #First5weeksWelcome Programme, as it will provide you with all the informationyou need to know.

Know Supports Available to YouPeer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS): PASS is aprogramme that helps you settle into college life &develop independent learning skills. It involvesstudent leaders from other years facilitating aweekly 1 hour timetabled study session with firstyear students.

Learning & Innovation Skills (LIS): As a first year student, you mayneed help developing your learning skills to meet the demands ofthird-level study (i.e. time management, study & problem solvingskills). In order to ease the transition from second to third level, allfirst year students at GMIT take LIS. The small class sizes for this module also offer excellentopportunities to get to know your fellow classmates.

Access & Disability Service: Students with disabilities shouldcontact the Access Office in advance of commencing their courseor as early as possible in the academic year to ensure they receivethe range of supports & accommodations which they may require.For further information, contact: [email protected] 091 742182.

The Academic Writing Centre enables students to fulfil theirpotential in academic writing tasks as part of their course work. The Centre offers focused academic writing tuition to students of the Institute at all levels, in all years (including postgraduate), & across all disciplines. The tuition available takes the form of pre-bookable, 30 minute, one-to-one sessions, directed byindividual student needs.

The Maths Learning Centre offers free maths tuition to GMITstudents. It is a drop-in service, no booking required. Bring alongyour problem & class notes & you will get the help you require.

The Student Assistance Fund (SAF) is a fund which is designed tosupport students from socio-economically disadvantagedbackgrounds & students with other circumstances giving rise toshort or longer term financial difficulties. Eligibility for SAF isbased on household income for the year proceeding the currentacademic year. Applications forms & further information areavailable at the Student Services Offices, Students’ Unions &Student Portal.

If you are encountering personal problems, you should eithermake an appointment with the Counselling Service or visit one ofthe counsellors during the drop-in sessions. If the problems areacademic, your lecturer, programme chair or head of departmentshould be your first port of call.

If you are thinking about leaving your programme, please taketime to speak to all relevant parties both within GMIT & yourfamily. If you want to leave for:

l Academic Reasons – you should talk to your programme chair,head of department, or visit the Careers Office

l Financial Reasons – call to the Student Services Office to seeif there are financial supports available. Also, contactFees/Grants to check the financial implications of leaving & how it may affect you if you decide to pursue another course in the future.

l Personal Issues – you should make a counselling appointment

Note: If you leave before 31st October & complete the necessarydocumentation, there are no fee implications.

In addition to on-campus supports, there are many communitysupports which will be visiting the campus during the#First5weeks promoting their services.

We’re here for you - A useful Guide Q&A

How do I get IT access?You must be registered and have your ID card to get IT access. You canregister online or in the designated rooms where ID cards are alsobeing issued (room 347 for Galway campuses, Room Y003 for Mayo).

On receipt of your ID Card, you should go to the IT Help Desk in the ITCentre to obtain your password which provides access to ComputerLabs, WiFi, E-mail, the Student Portal and Moodle. ID cards & ITpasswords will be issued in the Mayo and Letterfrack campus also.Students from Mountbellew and CCAM campuses will be issued themin the Galway Campus.

I’m still awaiting grant approval/I don’thave the money to register now. Can Iregister?Yes you can register online (https://ssb.ancheim.ie/gmit/) using the“Pay Later” option. If you can’t pay all your fees immediately, requestan instalment plan from [email protected] and a schedule ofpayments and dates will be arranged for you.

However, after 31st October, your IT access will be disabled if you havenot paid. If you are still waiting for grant approval at that stage,please email [email protected] and inform them of this so thatyour IT account can be reactivated.

Are there any financial supports availablewithin GMIT?The Student Assistance Fund (SAF) is a fund which is designed to supportstudents from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds andstudents with other circumstances giving rise to short or longer termfinancial difficulties. Eligibility for SAF is based on household income forthe year proceeding the current academic year. There is no closing date,funds will be distributed as completed forms are submitted until thefund is depleted.

Students experiencing an unexpected financial emergency may apply forthe Emergency Fund.

In exceptional circumstances, students liable for fees may apply for FeeWaivers. Forms for all these funds are available from the StudentServices Office. The SAF form is also available on the Student Portal.

As a student with a disability, how can Iensure that I receive the supports which I require?Students will disabilities should contact the Access Office in advance ofcommencing their course or as early as possible in the Academic year toensure they receive the range of supports and accommodations whichthey may require.
