BRUSSELS WORKPLACE STUDY TOUR – Careers, Employability and Skills

EXPLORE CAREERS IN EUROPE! Would you like to spend five days in Brussels learning more about internships and graduate roles in EU institutions and other employer opportunities? This is a chance to experience high profile institutions, such as the European Commission and to find out more about careers in Europe.

Students will participate in a visit programme to a range of EU institutions in Brussels and other EU-related organisations. There will also be a Queen’s alumni event to enable students to network with recent and established graduates working in Europe.

Students will design, promote and deliver a dissemination activity to share their experience on campus after their return.

As part of this activity students are expected to attend a pre and post tour workshop; keep a portfolio of information collated and noted from the tour; contribute to the production of dissemination materials; and write a personal career development case study.

BRYSON CHARITABLE GROUP

Bryson Charitable Group is committed to identifying and developing sustainable responses to existing and emerging social need. Their main activities include social care services and projects which aim to reduce the environmental impact of current lifestyles. Volunteering opportunities include local volunteering with older and isolated individuals.

International volunteering through the European Voluntary Service (EVS) provides funded long-term placements across Europe. The EVS is an individual international volunteering programme open to any 18-30 year old. Many placements are between 6 and 12 months long (with a shorter-term programme from 2 weeks for young people with fewer opportunities). The EVS is a unique international volunteering programme in that it asks for little financial contribution from the volunteer (the only cost being a possible contribution to international travel costs). Training and support for the volunteer are integral to the programme.

ERASMUS STUDY PLACEMENTS – Careers, Employability and Skills

Would you like to spend from 3 months to 1 year studying in another European country, as a recognised part of your Queen’s degree?

Internationalising your Queen’s experience can be a great way of developing personal and employability skills, experiencing exciting new cultures, gaining a more global outlook and perspective, as well as an opportunity to meet new friends and have fun.

Each year, the Erasmus Programme enables more than 100 students at Level 2 and above to study at selected EU and EEA universities which have exchange agreements with Queen’s in specific subject areas. There is a limited number of Erasmus grants available for participating students, which are in addition to the normal student loan. The amount of the Erasmus grant you receive depends on the length of time spent abroad and the country you go to. It is designed to help cover the extra cost-of-living of a placement abroad, but not your full costs. A contribution towards travel is included in the amount you receive.

The year or semester spent abroad will replace the same period at Queen’s and the courses taken will count towards your degree. Students undertaking study placements abroad as a recognised element of their degree are eligible to apply for the placement to be considered towards the Queen’s Degree Plus award. The award provides official recognition by the University of the non-academic benefits of an exchange placement, such as improved employability skills, global and cultural awareness and increased self-confidence and motivation.

ERASMUS WORK PLACEMENTS – Careers, Employability and Skills

Would you like to spend from 2 to 12 months working in another European country as a recognised part of your degree?

Internationalising your Queen’s experience can be a great way of developing personal and employability skills, experiencing exciting new cultures, gaining a more global outlook and perspective, as well as an opportunity to meet new friends and have fun.

Each year, the Erasmus Programme provides funding for approximately 200 Queen’s students to undertake a work placement in Europe. The placement must as an integral part of your degree programme and appear on your academic transcript. The amount of the Erasmus grant you receive depends on the length of time spent abroad and the country you go to. It is designed to help cover the extra cost-of-living of a placement abroad, but not your full costs. A contribution towards travel is included in the amount you receive.

Students must find their placement themselves – the Erasmus programme will not do this for you. For further guidance, and to obtain the application form for Erasmus funding, you should contact the Placement Officer in your School. There is a limited number of Erasmus grants available each year, so this funding is not guaranteed.

GENERATION UK – CHINA PROGRAMME

Generation UK-China was launched by the British Council in 2013. By 2020, It aims to help 80,000 students from the UK boost their employability, enhance their long-term job prospects and develop a global mindset through study and work experience opportunities in China. The programme offers internships and academic scholarships for UK students to gain international experience in China. By encouraging UK students to engage with China, Generation UK aims to bring young people from both countries closer together, increase mutual understanding, and pave the way to lasting links and partnerships between the UK and China. Internships: These two-month internships are set up through partnerships with CRCC Asia and InternChina, and cover a wide variety of sectors, including IT, legal, marketing, accounting, pharmaceuticals, hospitality and tourism. Which company you choose to go with depends largely on what city you want to work in. CRCC Asia has internships in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen; InternChina has openings in Qingdao, Chengdu and Zhuhai. While you might not be familiar with some of these places, we recommend doing a bit of research on all of them, rather than basing your decision on places you’ve heard of from the 2008 Olympic games. They are all unique and beautiful cities. Funding is normally available to students who are in receipt of or have received a Maintenance Grant from Student Finance or SAAS bursary for Scottish students during their university career. Academic Scholarships: Interested in studying Chinese language in the sub-tropical climate of Xiamen, or in one of the fastest developing cities in Asia, Shanghai? If so, there are seven different Generation UK – China academic scholarship programmes to choose from, ranging from 5-11 months in length, and you can start in either September or February within the same academic year. All scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodation, and a basic monthly living allowance. All you need to pay for are return flights (£500-700), travel & medical insurance and visa costs (less than £100). You can decide in which amazing location you want to be based and what subjects (at a non-degree level) you wish to study. With over 150 places available, we strongly encourage you to apply! The Generation UK – China campaign is supported by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS); the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland; the Welsh Government and the Scottish Government. GERMANY WORKPLACE STUDY TOUR – Careers, Employability and Skills

Berlin to Leipzig with visits to the small and big businesses in this thriving economy; Creative Industries, Manufacturing and more. In June 2017, Queen's students spent up to a week visiting graduate employers as part of the Germany Graduate Market - Workplace Study Tour. Employers Porsche, Sound Cloud, Audible, DHL and Big B Animation were among those who hosted in-depth insights into their graduate opportunities. The aim of this programme is to promote the aspiration of living and working in Europe. The focus of each organisation visit is to gain an understanding of potential graduate careers. Students are provided with the opportunity to network with recent graduate and senior staff who have developed their careers over many years. GLOBAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME – Careers, Employability and Skills

Hong Kong was the location in June 2017 for 25 Queen's students to participate in a Global Leadership Programme. This one-week programme enabled students to step outside their comfort zone and immerse themselves in a city overseas. Students visited organisations to see ‘behind the scenes’ and hear first-hand from senior leaders on the big issues facing business, governments and society today. There were three main components to the programme curriculum: • A specific global challenge exercise working within and across teams; • A range of meetings with visionary leaders from businesses, government and not-for-

profit organisations in Hong Kong; • An opportunity to get feedback from a panel of leaders on the strategies they designed

to resolve the global challenges. The Global Leadership Programme is an active learning opportunity and gives students real and practical experiences, broadens their horizons and challenges them to adapt and thrive in diverse situations. It equips them with the tools they need to lead change, now and in the future. Competencies developed include cultural intelligence, leadership for future careers and civic lives, teamwork, innovation and global networking. We are planning a similar programme in May 2018 in either Asia or the USA. The programme details, information sessions and application process will be advertised through MyFuture. IAESTE PROGRAMME

IAESTE (The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) is a British Council programme which provides cutting edge work experience for students in over 80 countries worldwide. Since 1948, over 350,000 students from the fields of science, engineering, technology and applied arts have taken part in the programme. As well as being an invaluable opportunity for them to kick-start careers in their chosen fields, the added challenge of working abroad allows trainees to build their confidence, a global network of friends, and develop skills that will help them make their mark in today’s global economy. IAESTE has also played an invaluable role in the workplace and academic circles, supporting universities and companies to recruit top students and fill essential skills gaps on short and long term projects, as well as benefit from new ideas, fresh perspectives and, in many cases, multiple languages skills. With IAESTE, you can do a paid industry placement lasting from 6 to 52 weeks in one of 80 countries worldwide. Placements are also available in the UK for international students. An exciting array of traineeships open up each year to undergraduate students working towards a science, engineering, technology or applied arts degree – you could find yourself working on anything from cutting edge electronics in Japan, to earthquake detection technology in Colombia. JAPAN EXCHANGE AND TEACHING PROGRAMME (JET)

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is an official Japanese Government scheme, which sends graduates to Japan in order to promote international understanding at grass-roots level and to improve foreign language teaching in schools. There are two types of positions available for UK graduates on the JET Programme: Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) The majority of JET Programme participants work as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs), assisting with English teaching in schools across Japan. As an ALT your role will be to assist Japanese Teachers of English rather than to lead classes on your own. Typically, ALTs will: Team-teach, or help with classes taught by Japanese Teachers of English (JTEs). Assist in the preparation of teaching materials. Participate in extra-curricular activities with pupils. Are employed by a school or Board of Education and often visit more than one school in

the area to which they are assigned. However, the exact nature of the ALT position can depend on numerous factors. As an ALT, you will play a key role in promoting communicative training in the classroom. Contact with an ALT also provides your students with a valuable chance to become familiar with another culture. Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) Applicants with a high level of written and spoken Japanese (at least JLPT level 2/N2 or equivalent) can apply to work as CIRs, assisting in local government offices with international activities at a local level. Duties may include: Receiving guests from abroad Editing and producing pamphlets in English or Japanese Interpreting at locally organised international exchange programmes Advising on planning for international exchange programmes Assisting with the English language instruction of government employees and local

PROJECT CHILDREN – US INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

We provide an international program to students in the US during the summer. Immerse yourself in US culture by staying with an American host family and working for a US company in your field of study.

Successful applicants will spend 8 weeks in the US. There will be a 1 week extended induction in Alabama where you will also volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Following this you will travel to your assigned city, where you will spend 7 weeks interning with a US company and living with a US family.

The program is heavily subsidised, with minimal costs to students. Our website will open for applications in January 2018, with interviews taking place in March. The program runs from June to August. You most hold a valid UK or Irish passport.

Now running for almost 20 years, over 600 students have taken part in the program. It has grown from the initial 10 students per summer, to over 45 students per summer. As with the children’s program, this has all been made possible through private donations and government grants, the hospitality of the host families, and the effort of the Project Children volunteers. PROJECTS ABROAD

Projects Abroad is an international volunteer organisation offering placements in 30 destinations across the developing world. Volunteers choose from a range of different projects including teaching, care, conservation, medicine and healthcare, business and language courses. These are ideal for anyone on a gap year, summer holiday or even those who are retired or on a career break. Founded in 1992, Projects Abroad has now sent nearly 100,000 volunteers from all walks of life to thousands of volunteer projects throughout the world. In every community overseas we employ full-time local staff to ensure that our volunteers work on worthwhile local programmes and that they are well supported and safe. While it’s exciting to travel to a foreign destination, we know it’s even more important to ensure that our projects are worthwhile for both our volunteers and the communities in which they work. That’s why every programme offered by Projects Abroad has been arranged to provide the maximum value to both you and the organisation or group you’re volunteering for.

At Projects Abroad we pride ourselves on our flexibility and our ability to cater to our volunteers’ individual needs. We understand that you don’t want a one-size-fits-all experience – you want something that is right for you. We operate in 30 different countries around the globe and now offer over 1,000 different projects. The options with Projects Abroad really are endless.

Unlike most volunteer organisations, we employ full time staff wherever we work. This allows us to run our projects continuously throughout the year. It also means that we have completely flexible start and end dates, so we can easily fit to your schedule. We know that there is nothing more annoying than finding an ideal placement, only to discover that the start date doesn’t fit with your plans. With Projects Abroad, you decide when you want to go and for how long.

WASHINGTON IRELAND PROGRAM

For the past 20 years, the Washington Ireland Program (WIP) has supported the peace and reconciliation efforts in Northern Ireland and Ireland. Identifying young people with a commitment to service and a track record of leadership, the programme builds their skills through work experience, educational opportunity, and hands-on citizenship both at home and in the USA. Through these efforts, WIP is building the next generation of leaders that will achieve a peaceful, stable and prosperous future for Northern Ireland and Ireland. Each year, WIP selects 30 talented students to join their growing community of leaders and influencers by completing a year-long programme of service and leadership development. The programme is divided into three distinct phases: 1) Orientation and Service in Your Community - During this phase, students are expected to

complete 30 hours of service in their local communities, and also interview local leaders who have inspired them. Participants receive training and support.

2) The WIP Summer Semester - The majority of the WIP Summer Semester is spent in Washington DC, with 2 weeks in New York City. These combined experiences are designed to expose the students to new ideas and new ways of working in a challenging, stimulating environment. Debates, discussions, the WIP Speaker Series and collaboration on WIP papers all create opportunities for the students to develop their own values and leadership styles. While in Washington DC, students complete an individual work placement. These vary greatly and are matched as best as possible to the student’s skills and interests. Previous work placements have included Capitol Hill Offices, Businesses, PR Firms, Research Laboratories, Non-Profits; and Advocacy Organisations.

3) Community Service and Advocacy across Northern Ireland and Ireland - On returning home, students are supported to use their new skills and perspectives to address the challenges in the wider community. The Class completes a two-day debriefing program that allows them to reflect on their experiences and identify how they are going to tackle the issues that are important to them. They continue to work with each other to develop policy papers, aimed at generating new ideas and advocating for systemic change in Northern Ireland and Ireland. Students demonstrate their commitment to WIP’s mission by completing a substantive service project with one of WIP’s community partners. This is a 90 hour commitment completed over a 9 month period, and is designed to be completed alongside full time study or employment. WIP’s current service partners include the Belfast Interface Project, The Centre for Democracy and Peace Building, Cooperation Ireland and the Together: Building a United Community Summer Camps, and Future Voices Ireland.
