Description:
Policy-oriented organizations have long produced dizzying amounts of statistical content. In the past, rows and rows of data would die a quick death in thick policy reports or inscrutable spreadsheets. Now, there are many tools to visualize and share data content online. Smart organizations are creating publishing their data widely to other sites, widgets, social networks, and aggregation applications. They are using data visualization and mapping tools such as Swivel, Widgenie, Google Maps, Google Gadgets, and others to reveal connections to people's lives. In this session, we'll move beyond the technological alphabet soup of technologies that underlie these approaches. We'll consider: Who is having success with these approaches? How does it support their mission? How did they approach it? How did they convince management of its value? Organizations will show compelling examples of how they took complex data and made it widely available and understandable to online audiences of diverse backgrounds. Takeaways: 1. What options are available for sharing and visualizing policy-oriented data? 2. What are leading examples of this technique? 3. How do I get started? How do I persuade management that this is a valuable approach? Presented by Kurt Voelker, CTO of Forum One Communications, at NTEN NTC 2009. Contact: [email protected] / http://www.ForumOne.com .

The DC Office of the Chief Technical Officer cranks out more

than 261 live data feeds -- everything from crime incidents to

trash pick-up delays.

Compare that to New York City, which posts

city agency information within 10 days of their publication, as

PDFs.

Gobs and Gobs of Data: Strategies for Sharing, Visualizing, and Mapping Policy Content April 27, 2009 15”“It’s not just the API that’s a big deal. It’s the discipline an API imposes. To build one, an agency has to record and store data in a way that anticipates public use. Data sharing is no longer an afterthought.

You begin with the notion that you’re going to share information. And you’re going to make it easy for people.
