TTWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME– October 22, 2017
Reflection St. Gianna’s Hymn to Joy
Smile at God, from whom every gift comes
To us; Smile at the Father with ever more perfect prayer;
Smile at the Holy Spirit; Smile at Jesus whom you approach at Mass,
In Holy Communion, and in Eucharistic Adoration; Smile at the person who represents Christ on earth:
the Pope; Smile at your confessor, the one who personifies God
even when he challenges you to reject sin; smile at the Blessed Virgin, to whose example you must conform your life, so that, seeing you, people
might be led to holy thoughts; smile at your Guardian Angel, because this angel has been given to you by
God to lead you into Paradise; smile at your parents, brothers, and sisters, even when
they challenge your pride; smile always in forgiving offenses;
smile in associating with others, banishing all criticism and murmuring;
smile at everyone the Lord sends you during the day. The world seeks joy, but cannot find it far from God. We must understand that our joy comes from Jesus.
With Jesus in our hearts, we bear joy- he is the strength that helps us.
Happiness is having Jesus in our hearts. But the secret of happiness is to live moment by
moment, and to thank the Lord for everything he sends us out of His goodness.

The International year of the Family
St. Paul of the Cross
St. Paul of the Cross was born at Ovada in the Republic of Genoa, January 3, 1694. His infancy and youth were spent in great innocence and piety. He was inspired from on high to found a congregation; in an ecstacy he beheld the habit which he and his companions were to wear. After consulting his director, Bishop Gastinara of Alexandria in Piedmont, he reached the conclusion that God wished him to establish a congregation in honor of the Passion of Jesus Christ. On November 22, 1720, the bishop vested him with the habit that had been shown to him in a vision, the same that the Passionists wear at the present time. From that moment the saint applied himself to repair the Rules of his institute; and in 1721 he went to Rome to obtain the approbation of the Holy See. At first he failed, but finally succeeded when Benedict XIV approved the Rules in 1741 and 1746. Meanwhile St. Paul built his first monastery near Obitello. Sometime later he established a larger community at the Church of St. John and Paul in Rome. For fifty years St. Paul remained the indefatigable missionary of Italy. God lavished upon him the greatest gifts in the supernatural order, but he treated himself with the greatest rigor, and believed that he was a useless servant and a great sinner. His saintly death occurred at Rome in the year 1775, at the age of eighty-one. He was canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1867. His feast day is October 20th.

Ask Sr. Rose
Why is the Pope the head of the Catholic Church?
The Pope is the successor of St. Peter, (Christ appointed St. Peter as the first
visible head of the Church), as Bishop of Rome and is the visible head of the
Church on earth

SYNOPSIS IN ENGLISH First: The Prayer Group invites our entire community to its praise and thanksgiving meetings every Friday at 7:30pm in
the Monsignor Powers Room (below the chapel). Second: We extend a warm welcome to families and individuals new to our Parish! Please register at the Parish House so
that we may be of service to you. We encourage all to fully particpate in our parish life.
Congratulations to all who celebrated their Anniversaries last weekend:
A very special thank you to our Altar Rosary Society for all their hard work to make this day so enjoyable!
