It’s Great To Be A SeniorAn elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and

went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great.. I would recommend it very highly.' The other man said, 'What is the name of the restaurant?' The first man thought and thought and finally said, 'What’s the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know.... The one that's red and has thorns.' 'Do you mean a rose?' 'Yes, that's the one,' replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, 'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?'

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, 'Your hearing is perfect... Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.' The gentleman replied, 'Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital. After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him. 'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'

Rider Eduation

At a recent GWRRA trailering course, before allowing the members to use the course, the instructors had everyone at-tending check their motorcycles, trailers and helmets for safety. One of the things they checked for was that the hel-mets should not be over 7 years old. It was quite a surprise to a member when he found out that the new helmet he had purchased only a month before on sale was actually over 7 years old and no longer suitable for use. The helmet has since been returned to the dealer who sold it.All DOT approved helmets must include a date of manufacture on them. It might be a label on the chin strap or you might have to carefully peel back the cloth liner of the helmet and look for a label or a date stamp on the Styrofoam. The industry recommendation is that a helmet should be replaced after a maximum of 5 years of use or after 7 years from the date of manufacture – which ever occurs first. Even an old helmet that appears to be brand new may have deterioration, due to many factors, that can affect it’s ability to properly protect you in the event of an accident.

Patrick Houlihan, a representative from Shoei Helmets (Tustin, CA) had this explanation; “A helmet should be re-placed 5 years from date of purchase or 7 years from date of manufacture, whichever comes first. This re-placement recommendation is based on a consensus by both the helmet manufacturers and safety stand-ards. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in; cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also de-grade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additional-ly, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five-year period due to advances in materials, de-signs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philos-ophy.”

Did You Know?Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?

A: In France , where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US, Americans mispronounced it 'love.'

Q. Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?

A: In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

Q: Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?

A: In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.

W here has the time gone? Can you believe that Christmas is almost here?Health wise some of us are experiencing some problems; Sharon Craven is waiting for her cataract

operations, Dave Lawrence is recovering from his operation to repair a torn Achilles tendon and is hobbling around on crutches, and Glenda Alderson is having her knee operation as we speak. We hope that everyone is up and around soon.We send our condolences to Craig & Glenda on the passing of Craig’s father and also to Sheila & Paul Haller on the passing of Sheila’s mother in Cape Breton. It’s not easy to lose a parent so our thoughts go out to both these families. These tragedies should give us pause and to hold those near & dear to us close at the holiday season. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year. Here is an oldie but a goodie, a quick and easy recipe for a soup for those cold days ahead.

Wingin’ It by Bob Hagerman

I t is not far from Bedford Pennsylvania to Cumberland Maryland. Route 220 follows a valley along the east side of Wallis Mountain, a steep ridge with no crossing roads along its length. The first road west is no. 36 just north of Cumberland. I have been in Cumberland a few mes and this me I want to have a look at

the country to the west so I will try to find my way over to Frostburg. It is only fieen miles, but the country here is a jumble of moun-tains and crevices chiseled out of the Appalachians. All roads here are terrific for biking.

I hope to get to a campground in Virginia for the night; it is a couple hundred miles away but since I am riding alone this trip I can stretch the day out a bit. I tend to forget how long the day is when I’m riding solo. The ride to Frostburg is short, but downtown is a jum-ble of old narrow streets whose plan is dictated by the terrain. It never ceases to amaze me that people built towns in these places. Aer half an hour negoang the maze I at last get onto route 36 again. It is not a main highway so I hope it lasts a while. Lile villages appear and slip by as I follow the valley south. I am not sure where I am for a while but the town of Keyser finds me back on 220. I stop at a Wallymart store for a fresh pain of Jeans. It is well aer noon and I need to keep moving. I have picked a spot on the map called Bran-dywine Lake for tonight’s desnaon and I want to get there before dark. I do not like seng up a tent aer sundown.

Route 220 follows the Potomac (south branch) upstream into West Virginia, then up Straight Creek (poorly named) and Jackson River. Late aernoon riding is terrific, except for a short incident in a place called Moorfield. It is rush hour in Moorfield, and there is only one road through town. I find myself in stop and go traffic behind a 5 ton stake truck carrying something covered with a tarp. The odor from the truck is unbearable; sickening, rather like a well beaten road-kill. Block aer block I can’t get out of the pall of snk which trails be-hind the truck. Even pedestrians on the sidewalk turn in disgust. Just as I decide to pull off the road before I puke the truck turns right into a large factory complex. The sign over the gate says “Wampler Foods Inc.”I may never eat Spam again.

The road winds on, Petersburg, Seneca Rocks , Franklin. Along about Possum Trot I realize that I have missed the Brandywine campground. I am in Virginia now, and the sun is beginning to hide behind Monterrey Mountain. I stop for a drink at a gas staon and check the map. I must have missed the turn. Paying more aenon to riding than navigang is a common problem with me . Rather than go back I decide to press on. There are a lot of state parks on the map, something should turn up. I should know beer than that: aer sundown nothing ever turns up.

Monterrey is a small town at the juncon of 220 and 250. It even has a motel. Two stories yet. With a corn-field out back. I wait a while in the lobby while the gal comes from the house next door, and sign in. The restaurant up the street sure looks good. It has been a long day and I have covered more ground than usual. I ask the waitress about camp grounds and she tells me that I can set up my tent anywhere in state forest, no need for a camp ground, just find a spot. My first thought is of that enormous ralesnake I saw a few years back on the Blue Ridge. I finish my pie and go back the motel. Maybe, if I get up early I can make the Pink Cadillac for breakfast.

Actual Lines From Resumes:I am very detail-oreinted.

My intensity and focus are at inordinately high levels, and my ability to complete projects on time is unspeakable.

Thank you for your consideration. Hope to hear from you shorty!

Enclosed is a ruff draft of my resume.

I am sicking and entry-level position.
