HMS AMAZON, a frigate of the British Royal Navy, visited Houston for theChristmas holidays along with the R.F.A. BLACK ROVER, a tanker/supplyvessel of the British Merchant Marine. Many of the ships’ 220 officers andmen were Christmas dinner guests in Houston homes. To reciprocate, theAMAZON was opened for public tours the weekend after the holiday at itsberth at Wharf No. 4 in the Turning Basin. The frigate is one of eight of itstype in the Royal Navy service and can match any comparable,contemporary warship in the world in firepower and performance. Her two
Rolls Royce gas turbine engines can propel the ship at a top speed in excessof 30 knots. Armament consists of a 4.5-inch automatic gun, a quadruplelauncher for Seacat surface to air missiles, a helicopter armed with air tosurface missiles and anti-submarine torpedoes, and two 20mm. guns. Theweapons systems are fully computerized and highly automated. The frigateis the ninth AMAZON in the Royal Navy, the first having been commissionedin 1794.

Houston, Richard Tallboys, O.B.E.,has been honored by Her MajestyQueen Elizabeth II by being made aCommander of the Order of St.Michael and St. George, (C.M.G.).
The award was announced in the1981 New Year’s Honors List. TheMost Distinguished Order of St.Michael and St. George, one ofBritain’s 12 orders of chivalry, wasfounded in 1818 to honor serviceoverseas.
Mr. Tallboys came to Houston inSeptember 1980 from Seoul, Korea,where he was Counsellor (Commercial)at the British Embassy during a periodof major growth in British trade andinvestment there. His posting asConsul-General covering six key statesof the southwestern United Statescomes as an extension of a wide-ranging career during which much ofhis varied experience has been relatedto international trade and economics.

Houston sees the greatest number ofBritish business visitors of any U.S.city other than New York. In value,Britain is fifth on the list of tradingcountries whose goods are handled bythe Port of Houston. $1 billion worthof British-American trade movedthrough Houston in 1980.

Santa Fe Line’sCapital SpendingPlans Announced
Santa Fe Industries, Inc., planscapital expenditures of $258 million onthe Santa Fe Railway during 1981,according to John S. Reed, chairman.
The expenditures will be the thirdlargest in the Railway’s history andcompare with $279 million in 1980.Reed attributed the decline in Railwayexpenditures to heavy purchase oflocomotives and cars in recent years.
The Railway will take delivery of 60new diesel locomotives and 406 newfreight cars during 1981. In addition,124 locomotives and 928 freight carsare scheduled to be rebuilt in companyshops.
Improvements in the fixed plant willinclude installation of 436 miles ofcontinuous welded rail, of whichapproximately 50°7o will be recondi-tioned rail. Plans also call for 154 milesof traffic control signaling, extension ofeight sidings to accommodate unit coaltrains, and a continuing program ofbridge replacement.

Marine, Offshore Safety Seminar Set In FebruaryA two-day conference designed to
