Introduction

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

Behold the cross displayed, whereon the saviour of the world did hang.

The Cross Is Foretold

Reading: Isaiah 53:3-8(NIV)

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

3 He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.

Like one from whom men hide their faces

he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken

by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

each of us has turned to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;

he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,

and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,

so he did not open his mouth.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.

And who can speak of his descendants?

For he was cut off from the land of the living;

for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

We adore you, O Christ and we bless You:

Because of Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Hymn 227

‘Man of sorrows! What a name’

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

1 Man of sorrows! What a name for the Son of God, who came

ruined sinners to reclaim:Alleluia! What a Saviour!

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

2 Mocked by insults harsh and crude,

in my place condemned he stood;sealed my pardon with his blood:

Alleluia! What a Saviour!

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

3 Guilty, helpless, lost were we:blameless Lamb of God was he,

sacrificed to set us free:Alleluia! What a Saviour!

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

4 He was lifted up to die:‘It is finished’ was his cry;

now in heaven exalted high:Alleluia! What a Saviour!

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

5 When he comes, our glorious king,

all his ransomed home to bring;then again this song we’ll sing:

Alleluia! What a Saviour!

Philipp P. Bliss (1838-1876)based on Isaiah 53: 3.

Jesus Is Betrayed

Reading: Mark 14: 32-50(NIV)

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch."

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."  39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

41Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” .

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard."

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. 46The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.  48"Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." 50Then everyone deserted him and fled.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

We adore you, O Christ and we bless You:

Jesus is Tried Before the Jewish High Priest

Reading: Matthew 26: 57-68(NIV)

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.    Finally two came forward 61and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 63But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

64"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

66What do you think?"       "He is worthy of death," they answered.  67Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

We adore you, O Christ and we bless You:

Because of Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Hymn 244

There is a Green Hill Far Away.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

1

There is a green hill far away, without a city wall,

where the dear Lord was crucified,

who died to save us all.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

2

We may not know, we cannot tellwhat pains he had to bear, but we believe it was for ushe hung and suffered there.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

3He died that we might be

forgiven,he died to make us good, that we might go at last to

heaven,saved by his precious Blood.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

4

There was no other good enough

to pay the price of sin;he only could unlock the gate—

of heaven, and let us in.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

5O dearly, dearly has he loved,

and we must love him too,and trust in his redeeming

Blood, and try his works to do.

Cecil Frances (Fanny) Alexander (1818-95)based on Mark 15: 22-24

Jesus Is Tried Before The Roman Governor

Reading: Matthew 27: 11-31(NIV)

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"       "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.  12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?"

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.  15Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" 18For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

19While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."  20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

21"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered. 22"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!” 23"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!“ 25All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. 27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Jesus is Crucified

Reading: Matthew 27: 33-44(NIV)

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

37Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

39Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!“ 41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

42"He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.' “ 44In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Hymn 236

‘On a hill far away’

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

1 On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

the emblem of suff’ring and shame;

and I love that old cross where the dearest and best

for a world of lost sinners was slain.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross

till my trophies at last I lay down;I will cling to the old rugged cross

and exchange it some day for a crown.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

2 O, the old rugged cross, so despised by the world,

has a wondrous attraction for me;for the dear Lamb of God left his

glory aboveto bear it to dark Calvary.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross

till my trophies at last I lay down;I will cling to the old rugged cross

and exchange it some day for a crown.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

3 In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,

a wondrous beauty I see;for ‘twas on that old cross Jesus

suffered and diedto pardon and sanctify me.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross

till my trophies at last I lay down;I will cling to the old rugged cross

and exchange it some day for a crown.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

4 To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,

its shame and reproach gladly bear;

then he’ll call me some day to my home far away,

where his glory for ever I’ll share.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross

till my trophies at last I lay down;I will cling to the old rugged cross

and exchange it some day for a crown.

Jesus Dies Upon The Cross

Reading: Mark 15: 33-39(NIV)

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

33At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"  35When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah."

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

36One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said.  37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

39And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"

Hymn 247

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

1

When I survey the wondrous crosson which the prince of glory died,my richest gain I count but loss,

and pour contempt on all my pride.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

2Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

save in the cross of Christ, my God;

all the vain things that charm me most,

I sacrifice them to his Blood.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

3 See from his head, his hands, his feet,

sorrow and love flow mingled down;

did e'er such love and sorrow meet,

or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

4Were the whole realm of nature

mine,that were an offering far too small;

love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Philippians 3: 7-8

Let us Pray

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

O Lord Jesus Christ, son of the living God, who at this evening hour rested in the sepulchre and did thereby sanctify the grave to be a bed of hope to your people: make us sorry for our sins, which were the cause of your Passion, that when our bodies lie in the dust, our souls may live with you;

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, world without end.

Amen

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

Christ Triumphant

Reading: Philippians 2: 5-11(NIV)

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

8And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself and became obedient to death—

even death on a cross! 9Therefore God exalted him to the

highest place and gave him the name that is

above every name,

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

Let Us Pray

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

Lord Jesus, who on this holy day of your Passion stretched out your arms upon the hard wood of the Cross, that all people might be brought within their saving embrace; draw us to yourself with the bands of your love, that, being bound to you forever as your faithful servants, we may take up our cross daily and follow you, and at last attain your everlasting joy:

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, world without end.

Amen

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

Thanks be to you, my Lord Jesus Christ,

For all the benefits, which you have won for me,

For all the pains and insults, which you have borne for me:

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,

May I see you more clearly,Love you more dearly,

And follow you more nearly,Day by Day.

Amen

Good Friday Service 2nd April 2010

To God the Father who loved us and made us accepted in the Beloved:To God the Son, who loved us and freed us from our sins by his own blood:To God the Holy Spirit, who sheds the love of God abroad in our hearts:To the one true God be all love and all glory for time and eternity. Amen
