P Our help is in the name of the Lord,C who made heaven and earth.P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

Confession of Sins LSB 184P O almighty God, merciful Father,C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and

iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Absolution LSB 185P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called

and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God

+SERVICE OF THE WORD+

Introit Psalm 84:1–2a, 4, 10–11; antiphon: Psalm 77:18bYour lightnings lighted up the world;*

the earth trembled and shook. How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!*

My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD.Blessèd are those who dwell in your house,*

ever singing your praise! For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.*

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor.*

No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit;as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.Your lightnings lighted up the world;*

the earth trembled and shook.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P Let us pray.C O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son

You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Exodus 34:29–3529When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets

of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to

come near him. 31But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the LORD had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

34Whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him. A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm 45:2a; 110:1You are the most handsome of the sons of men;*

grace is poured upon your lips. The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand,*

until I make your enemies your footstool.”

Epistle 2 Peter 1:16–2116For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made

known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.17For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes

from someone’s own interpretation. 21For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Matthew 17:1–9P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the seventeenth

chapter.

1After six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his

brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

9And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Nicene CreedC I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord LSB 197P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took

bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

5 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation’s furnace tried,By grace, in spite of fear and trouble, The Father’s heart is open wide.Where could I help and strength secureIf grace were not my anchor sure?

6 By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying; In Jesus’ promise I rejoice; For though I know my heart’s condition, I also know my Savior’s voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flownSince I am saved by grace alone.

Gifts from God: Matthew 17:7 – “But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Rise, and have no fear.’ ” When Jesus is with us, there is no need to fear. He loves us, cares for us, and will never abandon us. That assurance is the basis of all generosity for only those who are set free from worry can learn the joy of giving.

Study based on the book “Built on the Rock” by Ted Kober. Recent studies in the LCMS show that Bible Study attendance is a strong indicator of a congregation’s health and ability to react to hardship. Please join us to discuss how Jesus is the center of our congregational identity, life together, and conflict resolution. The study will be discussion-based and you do not need to read the book to attend or participate. If you have questions, or would like additional information, please reach out to me in person, by phone, or email. -Pastor Wurdeman

Thank You, from the Family of Emma Samson: We have received a thank you letter from the family of Emma Samson. It is posted on the easel board in the narthex for you to view. Please, if you want to contribute to the remembrance book for the family, submit your written memories to Deb Lafferty in the church office.

Services: This week we will be moving our hymnals back into the sanctuary. We will still have the full order of worship available in bulletins for now. Thank you for your patience as we continue with our transitional worship practices. Pastor and the Board of Elders are currently evaluating moving back to a single Sunday service in the coming months. Please reach out to Pastor or your Elder with any thoughts, comments, or questions about worship life.

Cleaning Volunteers: The chairs, doors, bathrooms etc. need to be sanitized after each Sunday service. Please see an Elder or contact the church office if you are willing to stay and assist with this sanitization.

Livestream: Our Sunday Service is livestreamed weekly on our YouTube channel “Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Tomah.”

Hymnals: If you would like to use a Hymnal at home, you can sign one out from church. We also have free devotion pamphlets and Portals of
