GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu (1) The Feast of
Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles (June 29), does not often fall on a
Sunday, but when it does, it replaces the Ordinary Time texts. Tradi-
tion has it that on this day in Rome, Peter and Paul met each other and
embraced on the way to their executions. It is probable that they actu-
ally died some years apart, but this day has been preserved as a re-
minder of their meeting and their martyrdom in Rome. Peter and Paul
planted the Church with their blood, drank the chalice of the Lord’s suffering, and
became the friends of God. Saint Peter and Saint Paul, pray for us! (2) I want to
acknowledge and thank Nancy McClintock, our bulletin editor who recently re-
tired. Nancy utilized her many gifts and talents in service of our parish for the past
12 years. Although she officially retired on May 1, she continued to help us during a
period of transition. Nancy did an outstanding job creating, gathering, organizing,
and editing information – most notably during the merger of our churches into a sin-
gle Good Shepherd Parish (fully merged on July 1, 2010). Quite an accomplishment
– and she made it seem easy and seamless! Nancy has an easy-going and calm nature
and a joyful, humble attitude and was able to channel many sources of incoming
information into one clear, composite document each week. Nancy, you will be
missed, but we pray God will bless you in every way in retirement. From now on,
please direct all bulletin-related information to: Amy Loring at
[email protected] or call the parish office at: 207-282-3321x105.
(3) Beginning this weekend and through Labor Day, Sunday Masses at St. Margaret
Church in Old Orchard Beach will be celebrated at 8:00 am and 9:30 am. It is my
hope that celebrating Masses at an earlier time at that location will make us less like-
ly to compete for space with those eager to get to the beach during warm weather.
We have increased seating capacity in the choir loft & town officials have assured us
that vehicles will not be ticketed during these Mass times. Again this year, because
of complaints from neighbors, the main parking lot will be chained & locked after
the 4 pm and 9:30 am Masses to avoid use by loiterers. A letter I published on June
15 explains why we are not using the Saint Luke Chapel this summer; copies are
available near the church exits or bulletin boards. Meanwhile, a 9:30 am Sunday
Mass is added at St. Brendan in Biddeford Pool. (4) Thank You of the Week: To
those who organized the Corpus Christi adoration services and procession last Sun-
day. Thank you!
Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 4 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: The story goes that President Coolidge once invited some hometown friends to din-
ner at the White House. Worried about their manners, they decided to do everything
just as he did. At the end of the meal when coffee was served, Cal poured his coffee
into a saucer, so the guests followed suit. Next he added cream and sugar. They did
too. Then Coolidge leaned over, placed the saucer on the floor and called the cat.
