My wife left the counseling center and launched National Marriage Seminars, Inc. to facilitate GCT trainings. She was able to balance time working with quality time with our son. November 2012 rolled around and our first crack at helping facilitate a training took place. 87 therapists showed up. I think we were all stunned. I forgot to mention, my wife was head of marketing for a Marriott Hotel chain. I had forgotten that until I saw 87 therapists in a room. We walked away from the training excited and began planning a Level 2 as we had 61 of the 87 therapists express interest. During this time I had been in communication with TGI and was planning two trainings, two public talks, and two VIP receptions for June of 2013 in Tampa and Washington DC with Drs. John & Julie Gottman. The trick at this point was filling up the rooms with enough people to pay for the events without coming out of pocket. We needed to be creative in reaching a lot of therapists quickly. We began building a database that covers the eastern half of the US. We also began reaching out to Universities and MFT associations to co-sponsor the events. To date, we have 30,000 therapists in the database, multiple universities on board as well as associations. At this point I was feeling good but felt there was something missing. It hit me, a road trip to the universities to speak with the heads of the department’s. I felt emails and phone calls were great, but there is nothing better than face to face communication. We set the date. In March of 2013 I’m shipping out for a month to speak with universities on the eastern portion of the US. We also began discussing new materials TGI has been working on to be used in church settings. We reached out to a pastor friend with a pretty large church and discussed the idea of using the new materials in his Life Groups. He jumped on board and it looks like we will be launching those materials in his church the first quarter of 2013. As you can see, the past six months have been filled with a lot of action and adventure. We encourage each of you to think outside of the box. Help spread the word about something you believe in. Feel free to join us in our adventure. There are many different ways we can all join together for the up-coming June events and beyond. We welcome your support and encouragement. Let’s help get that Gottman Revolution rolling full steam ahead. Chris Cambas MA, IMH, LMFT Director – National Marriage Seminars, Inc. www.nationalmarriageseminars.com

In 2011 a good friend of mine handed me a book

titled, The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work. As I began to read the first couple of chapters I was stunned at what I was reading. I had just finished paying for two masters degrees and here was a guy telling me, in short, his research had found a lot of the icons work in the field of marriage and family therapy to be wrong. After finishing the book I had a totally different perspective on my practice and what the implications of Dr. Gottman’s research meant for my counseling career. I needed to know more about Dr. John Gottman and the Gottman Institute. I discovered they offered trainings for Levels 1-3. I quickly ordered the level 1 and 2 trainings and was astonished at what I learned. I needed more information and training in GCT so I registered for Level 3 in Seattle (October 2011). I thought I had learned a lot about GCT but what I ran into in Seattle astonished me. The road map for therapy was crystalizing in my mind as I heard Drs. John & Julie Gottman discuss their findings. I walked away from that training changed for life, not just as a therapist, but as a man. Something amazing happened in the closing hours of the training. Drs. Gottman opened the floor for a Q&A session about GCT, themselves, and their dreams for GCT. What would you like to see happen with GCT? Dr. Julie Gottman began to discuss placing the Sound Relationship House materials in schools, attending think tanks to discuss their findings and finally (very casually, confidently and almost matter of fact) she stated, “We want to start a revolution." Wow, a revolution to help people get along better. I was on board with that. I flew back to Tampa and began telling my wife all about GCT and how we could better help couples at our center, not to mention, enhance the abilities of our therapists. The following months brought about supervision with Dr. Bill Bumberry (Certified Gottman Therapist). I asked him about doing trainings in Tampa and to my surprise he said, "sure." This lead to a meeting with Dr. Bumberry and our staff. He was gracious throughout the meeting but I'm not sure he was 100% bought into the notion that we could get 40 or 50 therapists for a Level 1 training.

The Art & Science of Love: a poem

1

I just cannot tell you, I cannot express, how your recent workshop made more of what was less. Long ago my therapist planted a tiny seed, which grew into a knowing that Gottman was what we need. Our love bank fully bankrupt, our marriage in a stall, it certainly was predictable we were headed for a fall. Neither of us could seem to hear what he or she was saying, I knew the pain of leaving was less than that of staying. And yet we knew the love was there, we knew we’d have a chance, if we could only find a way to stop this crazy dance! We registered, planned, and travelled in spite of fear and doubt,

2

there were also dreams and hopefulness to learn what it’s about. And yes! Oh Yes! The work was hard yet worth it, every minute, I cannot think how we’d succeed if not for being in it. We’re finally sharing feelings that before we did not share, and in that very sharing instead of judgment, we find we care. About what the other wants and needs as we try different ways of being, gone the angry silences as new ways we are seeing. And as we practice new tools we still live apart, But oh! The hope we both have and such love in our heart. Instead of what we used to feel, distance and despair, we are working though our issues and we’re a hopeful pair!
