1.Title:

Modification of control circuit of ac locomotives provided with Static converter for Soft start of Auxiliaries except compressor.

2. Object : 2.1. To start all the auxiliaries except compressor along with the static

converter. 2.2 Reduction in surge current and transient due to elimination of D.O.L

starting.

2.3 Reduction in starting sequence time of auxiliary motors.

2.4 Increase in life and reliability of Electro Magnetic contactors due to operation on no load.

2.5 To implement restart feature of static converter, if available.

3. Work to be carried out :

a) BLPV switch (in air stock loco, which is not in use) to be designated as BLSI

b) In case of dual break loco an additional toggle switch is to be provided on driver desk which will work as BLSI.

c) The QCON (PC-8 type) relay should have 5 N/C 3 N/O interlocks. d) One PC-8 relay is to be added which will be designated by QSIT. e) DJ (N/O) interlock on Inverter circuit is to be withdrawn. f) Switch BLSI is to be connected in series with SI equipment. g) QSIT (N/C) interlock two numbers are to be added in MTDJ circuit. h) QCON (N/O) interlock in Q-118 branch is to be withdrawn.

i) QTD 105 timer relay is to be replaced by a PC-8 relay QSVM. j) C-107 (N/C), C-108 (N/C), C-101 (N/O), C-102 (N/O), C-103 (N/O),

QSVM (N/O) interlocks are to be added in Compressor circuit. k) QTD 106 timer relay is to be withdrawn and VS-8 diode is also to be

withdrawn. l) QCON (N/C) two interlocks C-107 (N/O), C-105 (N/O), C-106 (N/O)

one interlock each are to be connected in C-107 circuit. m) Auxiliary interlocks of contactors are to be increased.

4. Application to class of locomotives :

All WAG-5 and WAG-7 locomotives provided with Static converter. 5. Material Required :

a) Two PC-8 relays. b) QCON – relay two interlocks. c) C- 105, C-106,

C-107 N/o interlock each. d) One toggle switch. e) 2.5 mm² control cable of required length.

Annexure-1 DRIVERS OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ELECTRIC LOCOS

PROVIDED WITH 180 KVA STATIC CONVRTER WITH SOFT START FEATURE.

1 Switching ‘

ON” of auxiliaries at the time of first energisation of the locomotive.

Switching ‘ON’ BLDJ, BLRDJ, BLCP/BLCPD, BLVMT in sequence.

Switching ‘ON’ BLDJ, BLRDJ, BLVMT, BLSI (New) BLCP/BLCPD in sequence.

After closing DJ when BLSI is switched ‘ON’, the static converter ramps up with all the loads except the compressor and after 6 to 10 secs, when SC is fully ramped up compressor will start.

2 Switching ‘OFF’ of auxiliaries at the time of de-energisation of the locomotive.

Switch ‘OFF’ BLVMT, BLCP/BLCPD and BLDJ in sequence.

Switch ‘OFF’ BLSI, and BLDJ and then switch ‘OFF’ BLVMT, BLCP / BLCPD in sequence.

The auxiliary load of blowers and compressor will be switched ‘OFF’ internally by static converter, then DJ is opened out. The EM contactors open on ‘NO’ load

3 Switching ‘OFF’ of auxiliaries while approaching “Neutral” section.

Switch ‘OFF’ BLVMT, BLCP/BLCPD and BLDJ in sequence.

Switch ‘OFF’ BLSI and BLDJ in sequence.

The auxiliary loads connected to static converter are switched ‘OFF’ internally by static converter itself and then DJ opens out. The EM contactors opens out on ‘NO’ load. There is no need to switch ‘OFF’ BLVMT, BLCP/BLCPD.

4 Switching ‘ON’ of auxiliaries after passing “Neutral” section.

Switching ‘ON’ BLDJ, BLRDJ, BLCP/BLCPD and then BLVMT in sequence.

Switching ‘ON’ BLDJ, BLRDJ and then BLSI in sequence

After closing DJ when BLSI is switched ‘ON’ the static converter ramps up with all the loads except compressors after 6 to 10 seconds, when the static converter is fully ramped up compressors will start. There is no need to operate BLVMT, BLCP/BLCPD as they are already in ‘ON’ position.

5 Switching ‘OFF’ transformer and traction motor blowers when the Loco/Train stands at a station/yard for more than 20 minutes This operation is for conserving the energy.

Switch ‘OFF’ BLVMT

Switch ‘OFF’ BLSI first and then BLVMT and after that close BLSI in sequence.

Transformer and traction motor blowers are switched ‘OFF’ rest all other auxiliaries will restart on closing the static converter. This sequence will take 10 seconds extra time but will ensure that the EM contactors open on ‘NO’ load.

6 Switching ‘ON’ of Transformer and Traction Motor Blowers at the time of starting of the train/Loco from a station /yard after it stationed there for more than 20 minutes.

Switch ‘ON’ BLVMT

Switch ‘OFF’ BLSI first and then close BLVMT and after that close again BLSI in sequence.

At first all the auxiliaries will be switched ‘OFF’ as static converter is switched ‘OFF’. With the closing of BLVMT switch the transformer and traction motor blower contactors closes and when static converter is switched ‘ON’ it ramps up with full load of all auxiliaries except compressors. The compressor will start Direct on line once Static converter has ramped up fully.

7 Switching ‘ON’ MVRF

The load is presently on DC

Bring GR to 0. Open BLSI. Keep MP on P. and again close BLSI in sequence

All the auxiliaries are switched ‘OFF’, including MVRH when Static converter is switched ‘OFF’ .After that traction to braking change over takes place, C-108 contactor of MVRF closes. When static converter starts again it ramps up with all the blower loads including MVRF in place of MVRH. The compressor will start direct on line once static converter has ramped up fully.

8 Switching ‘OFF’ MVRF

The load is presently on DC

Bring GR to 0. Open BLSI. Bring MP to 0‘ again close BLSI in sequence.

The static Converter switches ‘OFF’ with all the auxiliaries when BLSI is switched ‘OFF’. When MP is brought to 0 the change over from braking to traction takes place with the closing of BLSI again the static converter ramps up with all the blowers including MVRH in place of MVRF. The compressor will start direct on line once static converter has ramped up fully.

180 KVA Static Converter with Soft Start Feature 1.The static converter supplied by M/s. AAL/Noida and fitted in Loco No. 23640/WAG5 stationed at Tuglakabad Electric Loco Shed has been provided with two internal status contacts. The first contact is for converter fully ON status and the second contact is for the TRIP status. 2. Additional hardware required:

i) Extra Existing BLPV switch is to be designated as BLSI in air brake locomotive. An additional toggle switch is required in case of dual brake locomotive for this purpose.

ii) Status Of Relays- Reduction of two relays as follows:

3. Operation: When BLSI switch is switched ON, the static converter starts functioning and depending on the starting load the first contact closes in between 6 to 10 seconds and closes QCON relay (PC8 relay with 5NC and 3NO interlocks). One NC contact of the QCON relay is provided across all the functional relays of Q118 circuit to avoid tripping of Q118 relay through the functional relays due to delayed closing of QCON during the ramping up operation of static converter. One NC contact is provided in VCB circuit to ensure closing of VCB when static converter is in OFF state. Two NC contacts in parallel have been provided in C107, C105 & C106 circuit to see that the blowers should start along with the static converter. One NC contact is provided in the signaling circuit in LSCHBA branch to indicate closing of static converter. Two NO contacts in parallel have been provided in Auxiliaries Closing Contactors feeding circuit to check that the closing of auxiliaries contactors is only after static converter is fully in ON State. The static converter has restart feature. It attempts to restart thrice. The second contact, the TRIP contact closes and operates the relay QSIT, if there is tripping fourth time. Two NC contacts (in parallel) of QSIT have been provided in MTDJ circuit and when QSIT closes these two contacts opens out and trip DJ/VCB. With the closing of Battery Switch HBA the positive feed is available at BLVMT Switch. When BLVMT is switched ON the supply goes to QSVM (VRH, VMT1 & VMT2 status relay), C107, C105 & C106. And, all the four closes

through the NC (parallel contacts) of QCON relay provided across the self interlocks of C107, C105 and C106. C107 contact supply is available through the CTF running contact. When change over is done from traction to braking, through CTF, the C107 contact opens and VRH blower stops. At the same time CTF1, 2 & 3 braking contacts, C145 & C108 close and VRF starts running. The above feature has been provided to ensure that the static converter should not be loaded with both the blowers at the same time. Supply to compressor contactor circuit is fed through NO (parallel) contacts of QCON. When, static converter is ramped up fully, QCON closes and makes the circuit ready for closing compressors,. Feed to compressor circuit is through two paths one is through BLCP, RGCP and the other through BLCPD. Feed is further going through NO contact of QSVM and/or series path of NC contacts of C107 & C108 . Self interlocks of C101, C102 and C103 are provided parallel to these two paths. Supply goes to C101 & C102 through NO time delay interlock of QTD101. The closing of either BLCP or BLCPD energizes QTD 101 relay. After 5 seconds of closing of QTD 101, contact in compressor circuit closes and feeds C101 & C102. When C101 and C102 or either of these opens out Q119 relay deenergizes and the normally closed delay closing contact in C103 closes and energizes C103. Now all the three compressors are in working order. The sequence of operation is that when the static converter is fully energized after 6 to 10 seconds of closing of BLSI, QCON closes and then QTD 101 closes through BLCP and RGCP. C101 & C102 close after 5 seconds of closing of QTD 101and C103 closes after another 5 seconds. When blower switch BLVMT is switched on QSVM closes and normally open contact of QSVM in compressor circuit closes and keep the circuit live. When all the three or either of the three compressors start working the self interlocks will come in parallel to QSVM. When either of the MVRH or MVRF is in working condition either one of normally closed contact of C107 or C108 opens. When the train is standing at a station and the when the blowers are switched off through BLVMT, QSVM relay opens and QSVM contact in compressors circuit is opened out. At this point of time if RGCP is opened out all the compressor contacts and QTD 101 also opens out. When RGCP recloses with the self interlocks C101, C102 and C103 as well as QSVM in open condition, the compressor contactors close through normally closed contact of C107 & C108.
