INTRODUCTION

Kaimur district has close linkage with the history of Shahabad which was its parent district. Kaimur has an old and interesting history.

The earliest evidence of human habitation in the district consists of rock paintings in the Lehda forest that date to around 20,000 years ago.

In pre-historic days, the plateau region of Kaimur had been the abode of the aboriginals namely Bhars, Cheros, Savers, etc.

The district of Kaimur formed a part of the mighty Magadhan empire under the Mauryan and Gupta rulers from the 6th century B.C. to 5th century A.D. Later it was ruled by Harshavardhan of Kannauj, Senas, Palas and Gauda kings. Subsequently, Kaimur passed under the direct control of the Muslim empire of Delhi. Afghan ruler Sher Shah's father, Hassan Khan got the Jagir of Sasaram. In 1537 the old Shahabad district witnessed the battle of Humayun and Sher Shah at Chausa. Later the district of Shahabad was included in Akbar's empire.

The historic sepoy mutiny of 1857 under the command of Kunwar Singh had its impact on the district, as a result of which the district made a substantial contribution during the freedom movement of India.
