4.45—SMART CORE
CURRICULUM AND
GRADUATION RE-
QUIREMENTS
All students are required to
participate in the Smart Core
curriculum unless their par-
ents or guardians, or the stu-
dents if they are 18 years of
age or older, sign a Smart
Core Waiver Form to not
participate. While Smart Core
is the default option, both a
Smart Core Informed Con-
sent Form and a Smart Core
Waiver Form will be sent
home with students prior to
their enrolling in seventh
grade, or when a 7-12 grade
student enrolls in the district
for the first time and there is
not a signed form in the stu-
dent’s permanent record. Par-
ents must sign one of the
forms and return it to the
school so it can be placed in
the students’ permanent re-
cords. This policy is to be
included in student handbooks
for grades 6-12 and both stu-
dents and parents must sign
an acknowledgement they
have received the policy.
Those students not participat-
ing in the Smart Core curricu-
lum will be required to fulfill
the Core curriculum or the
requirements of their IEP
(when applicable) to be eligi-
ble for graduation. Counsel-
ing by trained personnel shall
be available to students and
their parents or legal guardi-
ans prior to the time they are
required to sign the consent
forms.
While there are similarities
between the two curriculums,
following the Core curriculum
may not qualify students for
some scholarships and admis-
sion to certain colleges could
be jeopardized. Students ini-
tially choosing the Core cur-
riculum may subsequently
change to the Smart Core
curriculum providing they
would be able to complete the
required course of study by
the end of their senior year.
Students wishing to change
their choice of curriculums
must consult with their coun-
selor to determine the feasi-
bility of changing.
This policy, the Smart Core
curriculum, and the courses
necessary for graduation shall
be reviewed by staff, students,
and parents at least every
other year to determine if
changes need to be made to
better serve the needs of the

Art students create portraits from ‘selfies’
stuffed animals in
class. The stuffed ani-
mals have enjoyed
the outing to the art
room. The change of
scenery has been good
for them. They like
the art room; it smells good, and their
portraits have been outstanding.
Our fifth period students are draw-
ing action figures complete with shad-
ing to show their three-dimensional
qualities. Those action figures have
included transformers, iron man and
Mater from Disney’s Cars.
Our studio time has come face-to-face
with “selfies” and the results have been a
completion of self-portraits that really
look like the students who produced them.
Getting the likeness in a portrait is
never easy; and, in fact, it is one of the
most difficult things to accomplish in
making a portrait. The students have
really done well with the likeness and the
abstracted colors they have been using,
which really stand out in our gallery lo-
cated at the bottom of the stairs just out-
side the art studio classroom.
We have a teacher intern this time
from Henderson State University - Ms.
Regan Renfro. Her teaching duties have
included our beginning mask lesson fea-
turing venetian masks. The masks will
be completed before Halloween, but
masks are universal. They are in all cul-
tures. In Ms. Renfro’s lessons we have
continued to stress the art history com-
ponent of our curriculum.
Seventh graders just completed a
metal-carving project that resembled
art work done in the Middle ages. Sixth
grade students have just completed
their animal paintings that have in-
cluded the art standards of drawing
from an observable object. The students
have enjoyed drawing their favorite
