Doctors are choosing general practice as a career for the many advantages it brings.

General practice demands a wide breadth of medical knowledge, it offers the opportunity to

subspecialise and undertake procedural medicine, and allows for balance between work and

family life.

The Astralan General Practce Tranng (AGPT) prgram prves regstrars wth the blng

blocks to work at the forefront of primary health care. AGPT offers a range of options for urban

an rral vcatnal tranng, elvere thrgh regnal tranng prvers (RTPs) acrss Astrala.

The RTPs elver tranng twars tw vcatnal enpnts recgnse b Mecare Astrala:

Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) and Fellowship of 

the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM). Rural RTPs also deliver training

towards the RACGP’s Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice (FARGP).

The AGPT program is a world-class vocational

training program for medical graduates

wshng t prse a career n general practce

n Astrala.

The program involves a three-year full-time

commitment, or four years for rural andremte mecne regstrars, whch can be

reduced with recognition of prior learning

(RPL). drng tranng, regstrars gan valable

practical experience in teaching hospitals,

in rural and urban practices, in extended

slls, prceral an acaemc psts, an

n specalse mecal centres that prve

health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander peoples and other people from

scall savantage grps.

The training includes self-directed learning,

regular face-to-face educational activities and

in-practice education.

The AGPT program is overseen and funded

b General Practce Ecatn an Tranng

Lmte (GPET), a whll wne gvernment

cmpan establshe n 2001 b the Astralan

Gvernment. Tranng s elvere thrgh

regnal tranng prvers (RTPs) acrss

Astrala (see page 10). The Astralan

Government places a quota on the number of 

AGPT positions available, therefore entry into

the prgram s cmpettve; 1,000 tranng

positions will be available for commencement in

the 2012 tranng ear wthn the AGPT prgram.

Rral pathwa

The rural pathway is designed for doctors

who wish to undertake the majority of their

training in rural and remote areas of Australia.

Some overseas-trained or overseas-born

doctors affected by Section 19AB of the

Health Insurance Act 1973 (the 10-year

moratorium) may be required to join the

rural pathway and are ineligible for the

general pathwa.

The 10-year moratorium provides that Medicare

benets are not payable for professional

services provided by overseas-trained doctors

an nternatnal ctrs trane n Astrala.

This restriction is generally for a period of 10

years, starting from the time they rst become

regstere wth a state r terrtr mecal bar.

Remoteness Areas (RAs) 2 to 5 (see page 4).

Generous nancial incentives are available for

rral pathwa regstrars (see page 13).

General pathwa

The general pathway is for doctors who wish

t tran n rban areas. General pathwa

registrars are required to undertake a

minimum of 12 months training in a rural

and/or outer metropolitan location and/or an

Abrgnal mecal servce. incentves are

available for general pathway registrars who

tran n rral areas (see page 13).

General requirements

Successful applicants will be expected to

cmmence actve tranng n ther nmnate

RTP’s training region at the beginning of 

the tranng ear (calenar ear) r, n

exceptional circumstances, within three

mnths. Prspectve applcants are avse

to contact their preferred RTP for advice

about potential placements for next year,

particularly if they wish to commence training

n general practce placements.

Registrars are required to participate in a

range of educational activities and regularly

receive feedback on their progress. More

Mandatory hospital experience

Certain hospital rotations and experiences

are considered mandatory preparation for

the AGPT program and must be satisfactorily

completed before the commencement of 

the second year of training (See ‘Year Two’,

dagram 1: Astralan General Practce

Training, page 9). The following summary

provides a guide for applicants but it is

recommended that you refer to the links below

for more detailed information.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) can reduce

regstrars’ verall tme n the AGPT prgram.

RPL applcatns shl be sbmtte t the

relevant college with the support of your RTP.

Applicants should contact their preferred RTP

for detailed information about RPL.

a rotation that offers broad medical

experience.

General surgery is preferred or, if unavailable,

a surgical rotation that covers the principles of

child and adolescent health experience,

which includes a high proportion of paediatric

emergenc attenances ner apprprate

supervision. Please contact the RACGP and/

paediatrics requirements.

Nte: If an accident and emergency term

has included experience with sick children

an alescents, where the jnr ctr

has personally cared for these patients in

adequate numbers, the RACGP and ACRRM

state censor will usually accept this experience

in lieu of a term in paediatrics. 

In addition to these rotations FRACGP requires

registrars to obtain hospital experience in at

least three other areas; and FACRRM requires

regstrars t cmplete rtatns n bstetrcs

an gnaeclg, an anaesthetcs.

FACRRM/FRACGP

The AGPT prgram s esgne t prepare

registrars to be eligible for Fellowship of 

the Australian College of Rural and Remote

Medicine (FACRRM) and/or Fellowship of 

the Royal Australian College of General

Practitioners (FRACGP). Both fellowships

are recgnse b Mecare Astrala.

Prerequisites for eligibility for receiving the

FACRRM or FRACGP award are:

• Satisfactorily completing the required

period of training, three years of training

for FRACGP and four years for FACRRM

(see dagram 1: Astralan General

Practce Tranng (AGPT) 2012, page 9)

• Satisfactorily meeting the educational

requirements of training

• Passng the ACRRM r RACGP cllege

assessments, an

• Meeting any pathway requirements (see

rural and general pathway, pages 4-5). 

FARGP

Some RTPs also offer training for the award

of Fellowship in Advanced Rural General

Practice (FARGP) offered by the National

Rural Faculty of the RACGP. This award aims

to equip doctors to practise independently,

safely and competently across a range of rural

an remte settngs n Astrala. Regstrars

must complete the additional requirements

designated by the RACGP to be eligible for the

conferment of this award.

Classication – Remoteness Areas (ASGC-

RA) sstem was evelpe n 2001 b

the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

As a statstcal gegraph strctre t

allows quantitative comparisons between

‘ct’ an ‘cntr’ Astrala. The prpse

of the structure is to classify data from

censs cllectn strcts (Cds) nt bra

gegraphcal categres, calle Remteness

Areas (RAs). The RA categories are dened

in terms of ‘remoteness’ - the physical

distance of a location from the nearest urban

centre (access t gs an servces) base

n pplatn sze. A prmar avantage

of the new classication system is that the

remteness strctre s pate each censs.

The ASGC-RA system was updated on

8 November 2007 after the 2006 census.

(rral r general pathwa).

All registrars practising in a RA 2-5 location,

after the mandatory hospital year, will be

eligible for GPRIP. Incentive payments are

scaled depending on the length of time

a regstrar trans n a rral lcatn, the

remoteness of the location and the full time

equivalence of services provided.

Upon Fellowship, registrars may receive

ncentve paments ner the GP cmpnent

of GPRIP if they continue to practise in rural

lcatns.

HECS Rembrsement Scheme

as dened under the Australian Standard

to prepare for your application. Please read

this carefully to ensure you cover all of the

requirements for your individual situation.

Referee Reports

approved GPET pro forma, which will be

avalable n the AGPT webste n the lea p

to the application opening date. For more

8. AGPT Selection Centres

For 2012 AGPT entry, applicants will take part

in a Selection Centre process from 7-28 July

2011. The Selectn Centre prcess has been

thrghl evalate an s a cnsstent,

of selecting applicants who are most suitable

for general practice training.

The Selectn Centres are esgne an

cncte n accrance wth the Astralan

Medical Council’s principles for selection into

specalst mecal tranng prgrams an are

by the professional colleges.

Mltple Mn intervews (MMi)

MMis nvlve canates beng rtate

between stations (one for each standard

interview question) with each interviewer

asking the same question to each applicant

individually. This is followed by a consensus

session of all interviewers to evaluate each

applcant.

All ntervewers have been trane n the

theory and practice of interviewing, thus

enhancing the reliability of ratings of 

individuals and reducing various types of 

ratng an jgement errr.

The structure of the interview

• You will be asked a series of standard

questions and asked to provide responses

to a number of scenarios. All responses

wll be assesse aganst the stanar

selectn crtera s that ntervewers can

assess suitability for entry into the AGPT

prgram

The venue/location

Applicants for 2012 AGPT can attend a

selectn centre n an regn n Astrala.

Snce RTPs are lcate thrght Astrala,

the Selection Centre venues will be different

for each region. As part of researching the

regn, cl as where an n what

date/s during the designated periods they plan

t cnct the Selectn Centre. Ths ma help

you to form a travel plan in anticipation of 

beng nvte t an ntervew wth the RTP.

Sme applcants ma als be ase

information that will enable the RTP to assess

an applcant’s nees shl that applcant be

successful in obtaining a training place with

the RTP. Ths prcess ma be carre t

n the same a as the selectn ntervew,

especall n lcatns where t cnct

such a process later would require additional

extensive travel for applicants. This process is

required to be kept separate to the selection

ntervew an has n bearng n the selectn
