Independent shops and restaurants are rare to fi nd in this day and age of

large supermarkets and high street chains. Birkdale is a village like no

other, as not only is it a one stop shop with retailers selling everything you

could need, it is made up of mainly independent businesses. While offering you

the best produce and service directly from the owner you can guarantee to be sold

your sausages with a smile. Gr8life takes a look at a truly unique village.

Jane Dixon

has gone

from a

competitive

ice skater

to costume

designer to

the stars.

She has

now got her

own business

making

and selling

costumes to

skaters and

dancers.

Here she

tells Gr8life

about her

colourful

career.

“I was an ice skater,” begins Jane, “and

when I was 16, I decided I wanted to make

my own costumes (my Mum made them

before that). After a couple of reasonable

attempts, several younger skaters asked me

to make costumes for them. At the age of

20 I started teaching skating and continued

making costumes for my pupils.”

This is where, it seems, Jane’s

fabulous career began and she has never

looked back.

After taking a short break and having a

family, Jane went to teach in the ice rink at

Blackpool Pleasure Beach and was offered a

position in the costume department making

outfi ts for the shows.

Forget Doc Brown’s DeLorean.

If Hollywood ever gets around to

remaking Back to the Future, I reckon it’d

star one of these.

The space age styling of Peugeot’s pretty

RCZ actually seems to suggest it’s arrived

from a few years into the future, so I wouldn’t

be surprised if there’s a fl ux capacitor hidden

somewhere in the haunches of its distinctive

double bubble roof.

It’s the perfect car for a spot of time

travelling into a part of the region’s fading

past, which is why I’ve taken the French fi rm’s

curvaceous coupe to an otherwise quiet

street in the suburbs of Southport.

Vulcan Street is an unlikely star in one of

my favourite stories from the seaside resort’s

rich tapestry of local history. Little more than

a century ago, this was the home of our very

own car company.

Vulcan Cars was the brainchild of brothers

Thomas and Joseph Hampson, who in the

early years of the 20th century had clearly

seen how much of a hit the newfangled self

propelled carriages were going to be and

set up shop at a site on Yellow House Lane,

before moving to the street now named in

the fi rm’s honour three years later.

Both those buildings are long gone, with

only the road sign giving any clue to the

car creators who were briefl y based there.

I reckon they would have loved the RCZ,

because like their own machines it’s clear that

someone has put in a lot of effort to make

it elegant. It’s the fi rst truly pretty Peugeot

since the underrated 406 Coupe.

Head over to the site most heritage-savvy

Sandgrounders still associate with Vulcan,

the purpose-built factory in Crossens, and

it defi nitely looks the part, a million miles

from the humdrum 308 hatchback it’s based

on. In 2010 it’s imposing and yet somehow

unassuming, but when it opened in 1907

Vulcan’s business was booming.

David Simister

reminisces on

Southport’s

motoring past

while test

driving the

latest offering

from Peugeot.

Driving back in time

The Peugeot RCZ based on the 308 hatchback, proves

a stylish visitor to Vulcan Street, where the Hampson

brothers were briefl y based.

Put away your winter woolies

and get ready for the most

glamorous winter fashion yet.

Stephanie O’Connor scours the

catwalks and discovers what is on

offer this season.

Winter is here and the battle of the designers

at Debenhams has broken out to bring you the

most fabulous looks, and this season girls, its all

about the glamour. We have picked out a few

statement pieces which your wardrobe cannot

be without.

At a glance the new trends may look slightly

intimidating, but individual pieces are very

wearable and will have you using the high street

as your very own catwalk.

THE CHEESE SHOPBirkdale Cheese Centre • 42a, Liverpool Road • Telephone: 01704 568822 • Website: www.birkdalecheese.com

The list of cheeses stocked at the Birkdale

Cheese centre is long and endless.

If you are looking for an after-dinner cheese board,

cheese for a fondue, a ploughman’s or trying to fi nd

that all important cheese for your recipe, they are

here to help. Not only do they sell cheese, but also

conserves and marmalade, chutney and relishes and

olives.

Owner Debbie Sheedy says, “Don’t be afraid to ask

for a cheese if you don’t see it, we will endeavour to

source any brand from around the world. We take

the lead very much from our customers, Lancashire

Cheese is what the shop was built on and is still the

foundation of the business. I am extremely proud of

the atmosphere in my shop.”

“It is not what you would get in a big supermarket. It

is personal and we all have a laugh. The atmosphere

is that of a local independent friendly business.”

Owner Debbie Sheedy with a selection of local cheeses

THE FISHMONGERSHalliday’s Fishmongers • 28, Liverpool Road • Telephone: 01704 551524

You cannot get as traditional as Halliday’s fi shmongery

which has every shellfi sh you could imagine, on top of

all your usual haddock, cod and salmon. They can also provide

game, poultry and an outside catering service. The beauty of

this little shop is that they know exactly when each fi sh was

caught and where. The customer can always have piece of

mind that they are buying good quality food.

Owner Joanne Halliday says: “Birkdale is a small community

and everyone helps each other. Supermarkets might try and

undercut us but they cannot beat us on service. We can prepare

all the fi sh for our customers, in fact we can do everything bar

cook it! We also have sauces and eggs etc. – things people may

not expect to get from a fi shmongers.”

Joanne adds: “If people can’t get out of their house for whatever

reason I can personally deliver everything they want to them.

Sometimes they ask me to pick up items from some of the

other shops as well and that is fi ne too. We help in whatever

way we can.” Owner Joanne Halliday

To make sure you eat your fi ve a day Stanley’s

Greengrocers are on hand to provide you

with the best produce at the best prices. It is a

family business run by the Cores who are in their

20th year at their Birkdale shop.

Viv Core says: “We have a wide range of

groceries and when we go and buy produce, if

we see something new and different, we always

buy it and give it a try.”

“If people come in and want to try something

but aren’t sure if they will like it we will chop it

up and give them a piece so they can decide for

themselves before buying! We think we offer a

service most supermarkets won’t and know our

produce inside out.”

She continues: “Birkdale is a lovely little village

full of small independent shops who all know

what they are talking about and we love it.”

Owners Ray and Viv Core

THE PET SHOPPetcare • 13 Liverpool Road • Telephone: 01704 564795

As well as good quality produce for people,

Birkdale has good quality produce for

animals as well.

From wild bird food to brushes Petcare has

everything you need to make sure your pet is happy

and healthy.

Sandra Ellis has owned the shop for 36 years this

year and can’t think of a better place to have her

business. “I drew up outside the empty shop all

those years ago and decided that was it, I wanted it.

I have always been hugely fond of animals and loved

being around them. I loved the idea of selling

products for animals and have been here ever since.

It is a great place and I have been here the longest

out of all the businesses.”

THE CARPET SHOPS J Carpets • 37 Liverpool Road • Telephone: 01704 550840

In Birkdale there is no need to go and choose your

fl ooring from a huge impersonal warehouse in

some industrial park.

S J Carpets has everything under one roof including

vinyl, laminate, wooden fl ooring and tiling. There is

also a wide range of brands from Rhino to Karndean

to Axminster.

Owner Steve says: “Birkdale is a great little village

and all the customers and shops know each other.

It is unusual for areas to stay the way Birkdale has,

it has kept the traditional feel which so many other

places have lost.”

Owner Steve Leyland surrounded by the many carpets available in his shop

THE FIREPLACE SHOPBlazes • 36-38 Liverpool Road • Telephone: 01704 565353 • Website: www.blazes.co.uk

When we said Birkdale had everything,

we meant everything, right down to the

perfect fi replace for your home.

Blazes, owned by Tony can provide you with every

heating solution you require.

They supply contemporary and traditional fi re

surrounds and the latest technology when it comes

to central heating.

Blazes also offers a no obligation home survey to

fi nd the correct solution for your home.

Tony says: “Birkdale is such a versatile village which

has got so much to offer. Not just to local people

but for a far wider audience. It has lots of traditional

shops which you don’t really see anymore such as

the butchers, fi shmongers, cheese shop and many

more. There is also a fantastic selection of bars

and restaurants and so Birkdale is completely self

contained.” Owner Tony

Tucked away from view in The Mews, a

small area of shops behind Liverpool Road

in Birkdale, is a little florist’s workshop.

It belongs to David Beckham-Doyle who,

although a florist by trade, could easily be classed as a PR

guru and event planner to the stars.

Here David tells Gr8life about his amazing career.

Gr8life: Have you always wanted to be a florist?

DaviD: I never really planned to be doing this kind of

work, my life just led me in this direction. I was always

interested in creative things such as art and fashion,

theatre and dance. I think this is why people come to

me to design their decor for events as I approach them

from a different angle to others.

Gr8life: How did it all start for you?

DaviD: I was lucky to be taken under the wing of some

very talented floral designers and florists who taught

me all the rules and basic mechanics of their craft and

then encouraged me to experiment and create my own

style. I was definitely blessed that they were so forward

thinking and experimental – definitely ahead of their

time! I was also privileged to work freelance for a

couple of high profile event decorators/florists who

also had a more theatrical vision in the use of flowers

and they inspired me to set myself apart from the more

traditional florist shop image.

Bistrot Vérité is popular, that much is true.

Planning to eat there is not an option as it

can take days, sometimes weeks, to get a

table at the time of your choice. In a few

months, Bistrot Vérité has become one of the North West’s

best foodie destinations.

Gr8life: Was food always important Marc?

Marc: Yes definitely. I always wanted to be a chef. My

father owned Claude’s Patisserie in Churchtown, so I

was introduced to cooking and baking from very early

on, but baking was not really for me, I wanted to be a

chef right from the start.

For the dream to become a reality, years of hard work

followed. Marc trained as a Chef at Southport College then

worked away in London and other places. After meeting

his wife Michaela they both travelled to Belgium for a year

and finally came back to their roots. Marc then started to

make his name as Head Chef at The Warehouse Restaurant.

Gr8life: From The Warehouse to your own restaurant must

have been a difficult decision?

Marc: Yes it was. I had been working for 13 years at

The Warehouse but running our own restaurant was

our ultimate dream. There came a time where we

both knew, that at 39 it was time to either try, or live

with regrets. With three children, the gamble was high

but Paul Adams, the owner of The Warehouse was

supportive and understood we had to do this.

Birkdale was the town that they both knew as perfect for

their new venture but luck played its part in finding the

premises that would become Bistrot Vérité.

The truth about

Vérité

A new restaurant is probably the

most difficult business to launch.

A reputation can take months, even years to build up

and overnight sensations simply do not exist.

The couple who have bucked this trend are Marc and

Michaela Vérité who, after opening Bistrot Vérité in

Birkdale, have had an amazing few months.

Gr8life finds out the secret of their success.
