ADA 4M Dramatic Arts - 1 credit University/College Preparation

This course requires students to experiment with forms and con-ventions in dramatic literature, and to create/adapt and presentdramatic works. Students will do research on dramatic forms,conventions, themes, and theories of acting and directing fromdifferent historical periods, and apply their knowledge of thesein analysing and interpreting dramatic literature, including Ca-nadian works and works from various cultures in the late twen-tieth century. Students will also examine the significance of dra-matic arts in various cultures.

ADA 4O Dramatic Arts - Open 1 credit

This course requires students to create and present a variety ofdramatic works. Students will present works by Canadian andother playwrights, and develop original material based on per-sonal narratives, local community issues, or global concerns.They will have hands-on experiences with various aspects ofdramatic arts productions, including performance, set design,lighting, costumes, stage and technical management, and mar-keting. Students will also explore possible careers related to thedramatic arts.

Study in this focus course includes: the elements of a musical-book, lyrics, score, dance; early forms of musical theatre - opera,operetta, minstrels, vaudeville, burlesque; and various compos-ers - Berlin, Gershwin, Kern, Rodgers and Hammerstein,Sondheim, Lloyd Webber.

AEA 4O Exploring the Arts - Open 1 credit

This course emphasizes the acquisition and application of knowl-edge and skills related to the creation, interpretation, and pro-duction of works involving dance, drama, media arts, music,and/or visual arts. Students will study, evaluate, create, andpromote art works and productions, and will use a variety ofestablished and experimental techniques and various technolo-gies in individual or group projects (e.g., the presentation of atheatrical scene or an art exhibit on a website.)

This course focuses on the refinement of students’ skills andknowledge in visual arts. Students will analyse art forms; usetheories of art in analysing and producing art; and increase theirunderstanding of stylistic changes in modern and contempo-rary Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, andart forms from various parts of the world. Students will producea body of work demonstrating a personal approach.

This focus course in Drawing and Painting will provide studentswith the opportunity to learn increasingly complex skills indrawing and painting and to apply these techniques to create avariety of subject matter. This is not a studio course. This course is designed for studentsinterested in art appreciation and architecture. Throughmeaningful exposure to art history, students will broaden theirattitudes and expand their visual vocabulary. Stylistictechniques and thematic subjects will be examined to helpstudents become confident, critical thinkers, able to look at andinterpret art. Through group and independent projects, research,discussion, and slide lectures, students will probe areas ofinterest such as the role of the artist in society, the meaning ofart, and humanity’s need to create and to communicate.

BAN 4E Accounting for a Small 1 credit Business - Workplace Preparation

This course further develops students’ understanding of thefundamentals of accounting by having them examine eachcomponent of the accounting cycle, with an emphasis on themerchandising business. Students will use computerapplications software to learn how accounting is practised inthe workplace. Students will acquire an understanding of payrollsystems, inventory, specialized journals, subsidiary ledgers,income tax reporting, and budgeting.

This course introduces students to advanced accountingprinciples that will prepare them for postsecondary studies inbusiness. This courseexpands students’ knowledge of sources of financing, furtherdevelops accounting methods for assets, and introducesaccounting for partnerships and corporations.

This course allows students to explore the beliefs and achieve-ments of the classical world, which have shaped Westernthought and civilization. Students will investigate such aspectsof classical culture as its mythology, art, literature, and philoso-phy, as well as elements of ancient Greek and Latin, through avariety of activities such as dramatizations, audio-visual pres-entations, and discussions. This course is designed to help students acquire and demon-strate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated bythe Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. Students who com-plete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacyrequirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of infor-mational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a varietyof forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs,opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintainand manage a literacy portfolio containing a record of their read-ing experiences and samples of their writing.

PPL 4O Healthy Active Living - 1 credit Education - Open

This course focuses on the development of a personalizedapproach to healthy active living through participation in avariety of sports and recreational activities that have the potentialto engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Studentswill develop and implement personal physical fitness plans. Inaddition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision-making, conflict-resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a viewto enhancing their mental health and their relationships withothers.

Area of Focus:

The learning expectations of the Healthy Active Living Education(PPL40) course outline the knowledge, skills and health area ofstudy that students are expected to demonstrate by the end ofeach course. Schools may offer focus-course options for aparticular group of physical activities as the vehicle through whichstudents will attain the expectations. A possible focus option islisted below.

PAF 4O Personal and Fitness Activities 1 credit

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety ofenjoyable fitness activities that promote life-long healthy activeliving. MCV 4U Calculus and Vectors - 1 credit University Preparation

This course builds on students’ previous experience withfunctions and their developing understanding of rates of change.Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraicrepresentations of vectors, and representations of lines andplanes in three-dimensional space; broaden their understandingof rates of change to include the derivatives of polynomial,rational, exponential, and sinusoidal functions; and apply theseconcepts and skills to the modelling of real-world relationships.Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processesnecessary for success in senior mathematics. This course isintended for students who plan to study mathematics inuniversity and who may choose to pursue careers in fields suchas science, engineering, economics, and some area of business,including those students who will be required to take auniversity-level calculus, linear algebra, or physics course.
