URBAN RENEWALilaje community

“Neighborhoods can be referred to as the small group of houses in the immediate vicinity of one’s house or to a larger area with similar housing types and market values. It also seeks to realise common values, socialise youth, and maintain effective social control

ProgramUrban renewal for the Ilaje community Residential

Site: The area of the site is 22 hectares and its perimeter is 3 kilometers. It lies between latitude 4N, 14N and longitude 3E, 15E.

Process: By applying fundamental urban principles, the site was zoned into commercial and residential zones. These two broad zones incorporated paths, landmarks, nodes and edges. Demographic data acquired through group and personal study of the area, indicated the community did not undergo any form of urban planning.

Solution: Neighborhood clusters were carved out of the residential zone and segmented into low, middle and high income areas. Care was taken to design each housing prototype to cater for an average family of 5 with an intent to improve their current social wellbeing.

The Ilaje community is a low income neighborhood approximately 33 ft above sea level with a gentle slope of about 3.3 ft to the lagoon. Soils are predominantly laterite and marshy especially on the lowlands of the eastern shoreline of the Lagos lagoon.

proposed urban renewal masterplan for Ilaje community

cluster arrangement09

The program objective was to redesign the existing landscape at the heart of the Department of Architecture, University of Lagos. The studio structures were first recreated in a 3D environment after which the landscape was redesigned to function with the site and its adjourning spaces.

“We Crea8" is a common phrase used by architecture students. It was used to guide the design concept and also add meaning to the proposed context.

LANDSCAPE PROPOSALthe “we crea8" concept

WE. CREA8“FunctionalityinAbstraction.”

“Pool of Crea8tivity” captures the sculpture of a man sitting on his own creativity ideas. At the heart of the department, the irregular block arrangement attracts the curiosity the observer to doubt its structural stability. The deliberate move serves to showcase architecture as an expressive problem solving mechanism with limitations only bore within the mind of the designer.

PETROL STATION ilaje rehabilitation project

The scope of the project was to create a petrol station facility with alternate profit centers to serve both local and transient customers in and out of Ilaje.

PRIMARY SERVICE

Program:A petrol station that incorporates an Eatery, a Minimart and an Autocare center.

Process: The project was a continuation of the Ilaje renewal project to examine how a commercial facility would coexist with the proposed urban renewal plan. Field studies indicated that the existing petrol station facilities could neither cope with the existing population or projected growth rate of the Ilaje area. Inadequate vehicular circulation within the site and poor zoning considerations, were some of the factors that effected the efficiency of these outlets.

Solution: My design segmented the entire site into 3 broad zones. Each zone was designed to be efficient in catering for its determined function. The pump island area which offers the core service of the facility, incorporated the canopy supported on an inclined structural steel system.

ProgramA Sport center arena to view two separate events simultaneously.

Process:The objective was to create a roofing system for the spectator stand using tensile and compression members. I envisioned a suspended roof structure that would be not only solve this problem, but would also be aesthetically pleasing. Solution: This was accomplished by creating two inclined core support members at both sides of the arena capable of supporting their own weights. Care was taken to brace these core members in other to resist the effect of buckling under vertical and horizontal stresses. The roofing system is a lattice steel covering which suspends an underlying layer of transparent sunshading screen. The screen features a gentle slope from the center of the material to the edges of the structure to effectively drain rainwater.By limiting the roof support members to both sides of the arena, spectators would have an unobstructed view of both events.

20 ProgramA library around a core.

Process: In line with the program objectives, my proposal was to create a building form around the core resulting from the change in levels of a series of volumes. Solution: After creating a sample module for the reading spaces and administrative offices, the volume was then attached to the core at extruded landings. This was done bearing in pedestrian circulation at peak and offpeak periods to ensure the traffic in and out of the library is effectively regulated. This volume was then reduced for transitional spaces. The uneven head room and floor distribution created the change in levels.

The roof of the entrance module incorporated an relaxation/ reading area to break the monotony of the indoor reading spaces.

The proposed Jacksonville Modern Art Museum is designed to revitalize the downtown river front area by pulling visitors from the vibrant street life condition that exists west of the downtown area to the east. The design would also serve as a landmark along the Jacksonville river front thereby enhancing the economic vitality of the area.

Program:A museum and mixed use building that shows a strong contextual relationship to the downtown fabric of Jacksonville, FL.

Process:A lot of thought went into understanding how the museum could as a hub, bring more visitors to the downtown Jacksonville area. The design took into consideration building form, ADA accessibility and Life safety requirements.

Solution:By recognizing the importance of pedestrian accessibility, footpath connections were drawn to correlate with how users would access the site. These connections further translated into paths that were used to determine where the building location would be.

Addax Petroleum My objective was to create an Addax Petroleum exhibition stand at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) exhibition 2010. The stand was particularly unique being my first attempt at creating such a design. The brief was to create a structure accessible from 3 corners of the 64 SQM floor space; as one side shared a common perimeter wall. The design was to incorporate a store, a seating area, a reception area and feature a pedestrian friendly circulation pattern.

In designing a stand for Exxonmobil, one thing comes to mind; “space”. With the 2152 SF space, the challenge was on deciding how many floor elements would be adequate for visitors without overcrowding the floor.

NMy objective was to create an exhibition stand for Nigeria at the World Petroleum Congress (WPC) 2011 at Doha, Qatar. My concept was based on 3 intersecting circles on plan extruded to form a cylinder. These forms were first used to create primary zones and then subdivided into smaller secondary zones. Each circular footprint was to serve a specific function. Leftover spaces from were the circles intersected served as paths

working concept

The second proposal for WPC had to be more linear in form. It was to incorporate a meeting area on an upper level and also on a lower ground level within the same floor space. Design elements were used to portray the cultural diversity of the nation while structural elements helped project a sense of modernity and presence as would be required at an international expo.
