Clear and Concise – By Matt Fotia

Monbulk big man Michael Langworthy has praised his clubs first year senior coach Andrew Williams for his clarity, attention to detail and structural set up, following the Hawks gutsy 10 point win over fellow top five rivals Mount Evelyn, 6.18(54) to 6.8(44) in wet and windy conditions at Monbulk Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Hawks overused the ball in the first quarter, failing to adapt to the torrential conditions, and trailed the Rovers by two points at the first change, before getting on top in the clearances and changing to a more direct style, which saw them kick four of the next six goals.

The only downside from the Hawks victory was their returning goal kicking woes, kicking 18 behinds for the afternoon, with six of those coming in a goalless last quarter for the men in maroon and gold.

Langworthy, who has spent more time in the ruck this year and kicked four behinds on Saturday himself, said Williams knows exactly what he wants from his players and has full confidence that his chargers will execute his game plan.

“He’s a very thorough coach, he knows exactly what he wants and he really backs us in - he’s always telling us that if it stuffs up, he’ll wear it (criticism),”

“In saying that he’s big on making sure that all of us know when to go and that we are all playing our role for the team,”

“We’ve got good structures and he’s very clear in his messaging and you can clearly see that it’s working.”

Langworthy said Monbulk spend a healthy

chunk of their training emphasising the set up of their defensive zone, and how to find their place in said zone as quickly as possible.

“We set up four to five drills focusing on specific game situations, usually around how to best set up in the zone,”

“You have to keep refreshing everyone, because under pressure we can sometimes get lost amongst it all.”

The Hawks sit on top of the Hallam and Bayswater Truck Centres Division One ladder with an unblemished record, having beaten all of the other sides in the division.

They continue their campaign when they take on fifth placed Officer at home this weekend.

Umpiring News….

We must congratulate and acknowledge some outstanding umpiring contributions that have been achieved so far, and will be happening today and next week.

Warwick Marsh 700 games – Warwick is a life member of the YRUA and has been actively involved in the coaching and mentoring of our junior umpires for a number of seasons. Warwick is also a dual Division 1 Senior grand final umpire and famous for his treats and snacks that he brings each game for the other panel members.

Richard Dobson 400 games – Richard achieved this milestone last weekend and has returned to umpiring this season on a semi regular basis, as he balances this with his weekend work on the buses. Richard’s daughter Macy is a current senior umpire and his son Jarrod umpired for many seasons.

Leigh Walters 600 games – Leigh is a life member and current Secretary of the YRUA, and throughout his time as a member has always been highly respected by his peers and the clubs. Leigh has shown great dedication and commitment to community umpiring and has achieved the pleasure of umpiring with his children Jayden and Riley. Riley will umpire with Leigh today in his 600th.

Andrew Marshall 800 games – Andrew achieves this milestone next week, and anyone that has had the pleasure to umpire with Andrew over the journey will appreciate and respect how passionate Andrew is about his umpiring. Andrew has umpired numerous Division 1 Senior grand finals, coupled with Interleague & TAC games and we wish him all the best for many more games.

Well done to Warwick, Richard, Leigh & Andrew and thanks for everything you have

done for the YRUA and community footy.

Well done to Macy Dobson for umpiring her first Division 1 Senior game at Belgrave last Saturday. Macy has developed her umpiring through the junior program over a number of seasons and umpired the Under 16 grand final last season with Josh McKenna & Francis Nickell.

Welcome back to the senior ranks last week Trevor Biffin, Arthur Kapoulitsa, Peter Dixon and Owen Davies.

Thanks again to YV Financial Services and Yileena Park Winery for your ongoing support of the Yarra Ranges Umpires this season.

Have a great day and enjoy the footy and netball.

Worksafe Report

LOVE THE GAME ROUND This weekend, the Victorian football community is encouraging fans to love the game, not the odds, as part of the 2019 Love the Game Round from June 27-30.

AFL Victoria is proud to partner with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF) to launch the 2019 Love the Game Round.

AFL Victoria is showing its support for the ‘Love the Game’ campaign via the annual Love the Game Round which involves all 10 Victorian AFL clubs, state league competitions, community leagues and clubs across Victoria.

The dedicated Round aims to educate the football community in creating a safe and healthy environment and for members to understand the risks associated with gambling.

The Round acts as a reminder for parents and role models, including coaches, teachers and relatives, to talk to young people about the risks and consequences of gambling, so they love the game, not the odds.

A recent qualitative study of kids who watched sport showed that 75 per cent of kids aged between 8 and 16 years think betting on sport is normal, and 3 in 4 kids can name one or more sports betting companies.

Head of AFL Victoria Rick Bell said the dedicated round is a perfect reminder to everyone in the football community that sport and betting do not have to go together.

“AFL Victoria understands the negative consequences gambling has on individuals and families and urges influential people to take the time to educate the younger generations.

“With increasing exposure and accessibility to sports betting, Love the Game Round is more relevant than ever before,” Mr. Bell said.

Join us in celebrating all the great moments this season and talk to young people in your life about the risks and consequences of gambling.

For more information, visit lovethegame.vic.gov.au or join the conversation on social media using #LoveTheGame.

OUTER EAST

After a few years in the Eastern Football League, one of the Wandin Football Netball Club’s favourite sons is returning to his spiritual home, with premiership Bulldog and ex-coach Jarrod Bayliss moving back to the Kennel.

Bayliss left the Dogs after their preliminary final exit in 2016, moving to Park Orchards in the Eastern Football League to continue his coaching journey. He led the Sharks to success in 2017, winning the Division Three Premiership, before finishing fifth in the second division last season, two games out of the finals.

He left the Sharks at the end of 2018 to join Vermont before applying for a move back home to Wandin in recent days after playing just four games for the Eagles senior side.

Wandin senior coach Nick Adam was aware that Bayliss wanted to finish his playing career at the Dogs, but believed the move would come at the end of 2019.

“There had been ongoing discussions with him last year and over the summer about his careers and we were aware that he was going to go to Vermont,”

“Those discussions did include the fact that he had a desire to finish off at Wandin, how important the place has been to him during his football career and how important it is to his family, so this was always his end goal,”

“My understanding was that it was going to be from next year, but obviously it’s come a little bit sooner,”

“I hadn’t had any conversation with him in the last six or eight weeks, so all of this has come in a real hurry, but obviously he’s a really good player and will add to our midfield depth – we’re happy to get him back, he’s happy to be back and his dad’s really happy to get him back.”

Bayliss’s experience, skill and fitness will not only add to the quality of the Dogs midfield, but will also help their younger stars adapt to playing on the bigger grounds, which has been a major falling point for Wandin this season.

“He’s done a full pre-season and the first block of the year at probably the best club in suburban football, so he’s as fit as I’ve ever seen him and he’s definitely going to help us whether it be at Wandin or away from home,”

“You add a player of that quality he’s going to improve your side.”

The Dogs have won their last three matches to find themselves just percentage outside of the top five as they enter a season defining month or so of football, playing all of the top five in that period.

“This month defines our season – this weekend is the last time we leave the Valley, which is going to help us,”

“It’s not going to gift us four points though and we’re going to have to be switched on throughout this block because the next four or five weeks will tell us where we’re at,”

“We’ll either be lining up ready to go for finals, or we’ll be planning for next year.”

In other transfer news, Doveton’s ruckman and ex Dandenong Stingray Gach Nyoun has moved to their namesake, the Doveton Eagles in the Southern Football Netball League’s Second Division for the remainder of 2019, whilst the Doves themselves have picked up Mitch Cotter and Max Sheppard

Future Focus

Cranbourne Netball Club coach Donna Wilson says the Eagles will continue to develop their youth as they look to sew up their spot in the Premier Division netball finals after their 10 goal win over second placed Beaconsfield on the weekend.

Wilson was pleased to grab the four points to maintain third position on the ladder, but says the result was nothing to ‘write home about’ as heavy rain reduced the game to almost walking pace, with Beaconsfield finishing the game a player down.

Once again the Eagles defence was the cornerstone of their victory. Cranbourne and Beaconsfield have both conceded just 316 goals for the season and are ranked equal second behind top of the table Olinda Ferny Creek (295).

Wilson lauded the season of Peninsula Waves squad member and 2018 SEFNL Best and Fairest winner Tara Cecil, but also the young players that continue to rise through the Eagles ranks.

“Obviously we have Tara so our defence is always strong, but the other positions have seen us blooding some new young players who are really beginning to blossom,”

“The young girls love playing with her (Cecil), she brings them all up to the level.”

Tiana Butler is one of those developing netballers who have begun to progress well for Cranbourne this season and was named as their best player during the weekends victory.

“Tiana is one of those young ones who’s stepped up this season, she started in C Grade this year and is definitely a player of the future,”

“That’s always the number one thing at Cranbourne - keep bringing the young girls up through the grades.”

Wilson’s enjoyed the evenness of the Premier Division this season and has stressed to her side that they must come ready to play each and every weekend. She also praised the completeness of the undefeated Olinda Ferny Creek.

“It’s a really even competition, you have to be on your game every week to get a win, there are

absolutely no guarantees,”

“Olinda’s defence was

the biggest thing for

me. Their defensive

end is brilliant, we

pretty much covered Peri Stewart with

Tara, but we couldn’t break them

down enough to

put together a winning score,”

“I was like wow - they’re a complete team.”

Wilson has been the head coach of the Eagles for the past four seasons and last season her side came from fourth place to make the SEFNL Grand Final, which they went on to lose by 31 goals to Tooradin-Dalmore.

Wilson believes that the pressure of finals brings the best out of her group.

“When it hits finals these girls find another level - I’ve learnt to stop stressing about where we exactly finish - I just get them there (finals) and they take over and thrive on the atmosphere.”

Cranbourne have two weeks off before they face fourth placed Woori Yallock at home in Round 12.

From the Media Desk – By Matt Fotia

A new Eagle has landed, the Rovers need a little bit more composure, the Rebels’ fortress and Healesville get off the mark in 2019. All of this in the Football Review.

1. Birds of Prey

Beaconsfield have pushed themselves two games clear of their old foe and namesake Cranbourne with a comfortable 49 point win on the weekend, getting their first victory over a fellow ex-SEFNL side since the dawn of the AFL Outer East.

Matthew Johnson kicked three majors, whilst Riley Verbi and Kyle O’Sullivan booted two with Jake Boyd and Jason Tendler the two best for Beaconsfield on a successful and soggy afternoon.

Along with strengthening their likelihood of receiving the double chance come finals time, the Eagles win over Cranbourne will help the mental side of their game, knowing they can knock off a side that has notoriously had their measure come the crunch.

Saturday’s win was just the first step in really proving to themselves and the rest of the Outer East community that they are genuine contenders for the premiership, with Narre Warren (this weekend) and Berwick (round 13) the next two - much bigger - steps.

Beaconsfield have faced the trio of Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Berwick 13 times since round one of 2018 and have grabbed just three wins, all against Cranbourne.

They lost to Narre Warren by 72 and 50 points last year, before falling eight points short in round two this season, whilst they went down to arch rivals Berwick by 44, 23 and 17 points in 2018 before going down to the Wickers by just two points earlier this year.

Whilst 2019 has clearly seen Beaconsfield go up a level and close the gap on the big two from the South East, If they are to really instil some true belief amongst the playing group and fanbase that this year could be their year, they’ll have to knock them off and they’ll have to knock them off now.

2. Rover Composure

The last goal that Mount Evelyn kicked in their 10 point loss to ladder leaders Monbulk was a perfect example of where they are really lacking in their 2019 campaign.

Callum Urquhart took another strong mark in defence before switching the ball to Damion Kift who marked more or less in his defensive goal square.

Kift rather than taking the safe option of bombing the ball to a pack of players on either defensive flank, produced a incisive ball to Noah Beamish who marked at centre half back.

As Beamish turned he would’ve seen the ground open up for him, a rarity for the Rovers on Saturday.

He found Adam Johnson who turned, looked for a target in Kaleb Van Beek, who despite not marking the football was able to dish off to Matthew Brierley who ran into an open goal.

A piece of play that was not matched for the entire afternoon and was as cutting edge a goal as you’ll see in Division One this season, all beginning with Damion Kift’s composed kick when exiting defence.

Alas, the Rovers don’t often go with this approach when exiting their back 50. They prefer to clear their lines with an eye for distance rather than precision, looking to set up their array of terrier like small forwards with a chance to harass their opponents and will the ball forward in a flash.

Whilst I understand the need for the Rovers to move the ball quickly, due to their forward set up - especially when they lack Robert Hatfield down forward - they still need to take more care when bringing the ball out of defence.

This reckless approach is easier to accommodate for on smaller grounds, much like their home patch, as the lack of space makes pressuring the ball carrier a whole lot easier. On the bigger surfaces of Officer, Pakenham and Doveton this task when become a lot more difficult and will see them concede a lot more possession and in turn goals.

Their last goal shows that they have the

Page 15: GraeVine - AFL Outer East – AFL Outer East · between 8 and 16 years think betting on sport is normal, and 3 in 4 kids can name one or more sports betting companies. Head of AFL

From the Media Desk continued

players and the know-how to produce a more composed passage of play.

They just need to use it more often.

3. Rebels Rising

With a hard fought, rain soaked, 45 point win over Thornton-Eildon, Alexandra now find themselves sitting in fifth place on the ladder a game clear of their closest rivals Gembrook-Cockatoo and Powelltown.

The win was also the Rebels first win away from home for the 2019, with Sam Kidd’s men a completely different side on their home patch.

They’ve played four fixtures at the Alexandra Football Ground this season and have won three against Thornton-Eildon, Yea and Yarra Glen. Their only loss was to reigning premier, ladder leader and premiership favourite Yarra Junction, by a more than respectable 34 points.

They’ve scored 395 points when playing at home and have reached the 100 point barrier on two occasions. Defensively they’ve let in just 232 points across those four games with the aforementioned Eagles the only team to get past 72 points.

Thats an average of 98.75 points scored per game and 58 conceded per game.

Away from home it is a very different story.

They’ve played five matches away from home and have kicked over 62 points on just one occasion, when they managed 92 against Powelltown in a game that they lost by 29 points.

They’ve scored just 283 points at an average of 56.6 and conceded 480 at an average of 96. Almost a complete mirror of their home form.

Whilst they will no doubt be endeavouring to improve this poor away form, the Rebels will be banking on their home form to drive them into a fourth straight finals series. They’ve already pinched a win over a top four side in Yarra Glen and will be eyeing off Kinglake and Seville over the course of the next seven weeks.

But it will be this weekends clash with Gembrook-Cockatoo and the round 14 encounter with Powelltown where they will be

really looking to cash in. Those two matches are likely to define the Rebels season. Win both and they’ll have one foot in the finals.

Luckily for the men in Red, White and Black, they’ll be playing those two games at home.

4. Bloods Boil

Healesville are off the mark in 2019, winning an exciting match against Upwey-Tecoma by nine points at Chosen Avenue.

The Bloods sniffed their opportunity for a victory and dominated the second half outscoring the Tigers by 22 points to grab their first win for the season.

This shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise however, with Healesville showing some really good signs in recent weeks, especially in their last performance against Wandin, where they managed to kick 18 goals.

Rodney Woodford kicked six goals in a best on ground performance to follow his bag of four against Wandin, bringing his season tally to 21 goals for the year in the process, whilst Nic Mende continued his really good form, with a second appearance in the best two players for the Bloods in three weeks. Max Donegan has also been impressive with six goals in two weeks.

Despite their lowly position a number of opposition coaches have noted that the Bloods clearance work is still top quality, and that they have some very talented players in their forward fifty. Smaller grounds such as Clegg Road and Chosen Avenue will suit their capabilities to a tee, with the lack of space giving those highly rated clearance players a direct route to the talents closer to goal.

It’s a well deserved win for both those involved in the on field and those putting in their time off the field.

It could also be a sign of the light at the end of the tunnel.
